Xavi Calls For Barcelona To Sign Franck Ribery



The Spanish ace has indicated that if it were up to him, Barcelona would try to land the Bayern Munich player...

Franck Ribery has been constantly linked with a move to Spain in the summer, with Barcelona and Real Madrid both thought to be in the running for the midfielder's signature.

The Frenchman has publicly stated his preference for a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, but not even that appears to have cooled the interest of the Catalan club.

Xavi has now declared that he would do his best to sign Ribery if he were the president of the club.

"I would sign him, he is a puñal [someone who can cut teams open], a puñal," he told Mundo Deportivo. "To have a player like that on the wing is exceptional.

"We experienced it the day we played Bayern and we saw there were always things coming from that side when he had the ball, it would be a privilege to play with him.

"I am not the one who has to decide, but if an effort for Ribery is required, I would make it."

Xavi added that David Villa, who has also been tipped to join Barcelona, would fit in perfectly at the Camp Nou and could easily play alongside Samuel Eto'o.

"I would like him [Villa] to come, he is a great guy, a great team-member, hard-working, humble, he totally has a Barca profile," Xavi added.

"He is a very complete striker. Besides, I have a lot of affinity with him, we know each other from the national team, from Adidas.... When we are together we have a good time.

"At Bernabeu, on the day of the 2-6, and in the Champions League final, Eto'o played on the wing and Villa can play there too.

"Samuel is professional, hard-working, he has the goal, he is a number one.

"I wish he could stay, as well as Villa, but that depends on the president, Pep [Guardiola] and Txiki [Begiristain]. I do not enter there."

Barca close on Keirrison



Barcelona are close to agreeing a deal to sign Palmeiras striker Keirrison.

The Spanish and European champions have been quiet in the transfer market so far this summer, but are expected to seal a deal for Keirrison imminently.

Keirrison, 20, only joined Palmeiras in January following his impressive exploits for Coritiba, who he top scored with last season with 21 goals.

Barca president Joan Laporta has confirmed that an agreement is in place and that an announcement could soon be made.

"We are close to formalising Keirrison's contract, there's already a pre-agreement in place," said Laporta.

"Keirrison is a player we have been monitoring for some time and we expect to announce his signing soon."

David Villa is reportedly set to return to Valencia to demand a move to Barcelona.

'El Guaje' has been the subject of intense transfer speculation over the summer, with the boardroom complications at the Mestalla dragging matters out even further.

However, it appears that Villa has run out of patience, as according to Catalunya Radio, he is set to return to Valencia on Monday and speak with either Manuel Llorente or Vicente Soriano, if not both.

Villa will argue that the club had agreed to allow him to to take up an attractive offer if it came along, regardless of who was in charge of the club.

Valencia's ownership situation continues be the cause of much confusion, to the extent that Villa does not know which man to discuss the issue with.

Valdano tells Dutchmen to fly away



General director Jorge Valdano has declared that Real Madrid’s Dutch contingent can freely depart at the right price.

Valdano has told Klass-Jan Huntelaar, Royston Drenthe, Wesley Sneijder, Rafael van der Vaart, Arjen Robben and Ruud van Nistelrooy that they can all leave if the club gets a suitable offer for their services, according to El Mundo Deportivo.

Huntelaar came closest to leaving recently, but allegedly rejected VfB Stuttgart's offer of a contract earlier this week. Manchester United are rumoured to be interested in the former Ajax hitman.

Royston Drenthe was also on the verge of a Fiorentina deal, until La Viola pulled the plug on the deal.

Wesley Sneijder has been linked with Chelsea, at the meantime, while Los Blancos are trying to package Sneijder, Van der Vaart ot Robben in a player exchange deal for Liverpool's Xavi Alonso.

Finally, Ruud van Nistelrooy future is also in limbo, with Blackburn Rovers recently put off by the former Dutch international's wage demands.

Nakamura - I'm not a star



Espanyol's prize recruit Shunsuke Nakamura believes his status at the club will be no different from his new team-mates.

The 31-year-old, who snubbed a return to Japan to sign a two-year deal with the La Liga side last month, arrived in Spain amid much fanfare.

Hundreds of adoring fans and reporters greeted the midfielder as he swept into Barcelona for a medical.

"I'm not a star," Nakamura told The Standard.

"I will have to work twice as hard as everyone else at the club and be prepared to put in a defensive shift.

"It's not easy to make an impact in Spanish football. I'll be trying hard to establish myself step by step."

Espanyol manager Mauricio Pochettino is backing the Japanese international to be a success and lauded the player's attitude.

"He is a dream signing and we are confident he will live up to expectations," he said.

"We don't think he will just be a media figure. He will be an important player for the team.

Kaka believes that Real Madrid paid huge amounts to sign both he and Cristiano Ronaldo because they were worth it and believes that he will live up to the price tag.

Los Merengues spent a reported €67million to prise the Brazilian away from AC Milan having already agreed a dfeal worth around €94million to sign the Manchester United star.

While many eyebrows have been raised about the amount spent by Madrid, Kaka thinks that it will be seen as a wise investment because he has earned that fee by being so good.

"(The reason) that Real Madrid have decided to pay so much money for us is because we are worth it, isn't it? Because we've shown it with our football over the last few years," he is quoted as saying by Marca.

"We are in a sport which pays these kinds of figures and within this sphere it could be that we are worth this investment.

"In the case of Cristiano Ronaldo, who is the most expensive player, he has shown that he's number one and that he's worth this money.

The price tag will not cause him any sleepless nights either as he thinks that he will play well and fans and pundits will forget about it.

Real captain heaps praise on "super nice" Ronaldo

Real Madrid captain Raul Gonzalez heaped praise Tuesday on his new teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, calling the Portuguese international winger "super nice" and a "hardworking".

"He is super nice, normal and very harworking", he told a news conference in Maynooth, Ireland where the club began a nine-day pre-season training camp on Tuesday.

"He is integrated. He seems very happy. In the media it seems like everything he does and says, every gesture, has a lot of meaning but he is much more normal than people think", the 32-year-old added.

Real signed Ronaldo from Manchester United last month on a 6-year deal worth around €94 million and he will reportedly be paid €13 million each season, making him the most expensive player in the world.

The 24-year-old, was officially unveiled before some 75.000 ecstatic Real fans on 6 July at Santiago Bernabeu, is being protected by several security guards during his stay in Ireland.

Real will play a friendly match against current Irish champions Shamrock Rovers on 20 July, two days before its training camp in Ireland ends.

Higuain unfazed by presence of star signings

Real Madrid's Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain, the club's top scorer last season, is unfazed by the prospect of facing more competition for a place in the starting line-up due to the arrival of stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

"Very good players have joined the squad and it will be hard to earn a starting spot. We'll have to do our best and show the coach he can count on all of us", he said at the club's pre-season training camp at Maynooth near Dublin.

"It naturally makes me happy when people want me on the starting XI, but we must respect the choice of other players. I will fight hard to be a starter, but the coach ultimately decides what to do", the 21-year-old added.

New Real coach Manuel Pellegrini has lined up Benzema, who joined the club from French side Olympique Lyon for a reported fee of between €35 million earlier this month and Real captain Raul as strikers during training.

But Spain's sports press have reported that Higuain, a fan favourite, still has a chance to be in the starting line-up if Pellegrini decides to play 4-4-2 where he can partner with Benzema or Ronaldo.

Real have spent around €220 million on new recruits since construction magnate Florentino Perez returned to the presidency of the club last month.

In addition to Ronaldo and Benzema, the club have signed Spain's Raul Albiol and Brazil's Kaka.

"We have new players of the highest order, but that doesn't mean we didn't have any before. Those who have joined us this summer did a lot at their previous clubs and we hope they do the same at Real Madrid", said Higuain.

David Villa to stay at Valencia

David Villa had constantly been linked with a move to FC Barcelona, but the Catalan club's failure to reach a compromise with Valencia ultimately made them switch their attention to other targets.

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic reportedly close to completing a switch to Camp Nou, Villa's hopes of securing his highly-anticipated move to Barca appear to be dead in the water.

According to Superdeporte, Villa, in a phone conversation with Valencia president, Manuel Llorente, said he will not depart the club in the summer.

"It is decided, I will stay at Valencia", Villa is quoted as saying.

The Spanish daily further claims that Villa will join up with the rest of the squad next week and will hold a press conference together with Valencia to publicly address this whole matter.

Formaţia Real Madrid a câştigat, luni, scor 1-0, cu Shamrock Rovers, în primul meci amical din acest presezon, disputat pe Tallaght Stadium din Dublin şi în care au debutat la echipa iberică Cristiano Ronaldo şi Karim Benzema.

Singurul gol al meciului a fost marcat de fostul atacant al echipei Olympique Lyon, Karim Benzema, în minutul 87, informează site-ul oficial al madrilenilor.

Tehnicianul echipei din capitala Spaniei, Manuel Pellegrini, care s-a aflat la primul joc ca principal al Realului, i-a folosit în meciul cu echipa din prima ligă irlandeză pe Dudek - Torres (Salgado '45), Pepe (Heinze '45), Metzelder (Garay '45), Marcelo (Drenthe '45) - Gago (Parejo '45), Lass (Tebar '63), Guti (Sneijder '45), Cristiano Ronaldo (Van der Vaart '45) - Raul (Benzema '45), Higuain (Negredo '45).
