Totti furious after opening defeat
Francesco Totti was left seething over the referee's decision not to send off Giuseppe Biava for a foul before scoring the winner.
Biava was the last man and brought down Roma's Jeremy Menez but was not given his marching orders and went on to net the decisive goal in the 83rd minute of a 3-2 home win.
Totti was so bitter that he could not celebrate becoming Serie A's ninth all-time leading scorer with his 179th strike.
"It was a disgrace," he said. "It's incredible what the referee told us.
"When we asked why he had not shown a straight red considering Biava was the last man, he said he was not the last man.
"Either I missed something on the rules or that was a blatant sending-off."
Totti and Co will need to overcome the frustration quickly in order to concentrate on Thursday's return leg in the Europa League play-off against MFK Kosice.
The Romans will then face Juventus at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.
"I cannot hold a gun to his head"
Antonio Cassano is desperate to play at the 2010 World Cup and wants Marcello Lippi to consider him.
The former AS Roma and Real Madrid forward has been a revelation since joining Sampdoria but his ill-tempered past has seen Lippi leaving him out of the national team.
Cassano knows his fate lies in the hands of Lippi but will continue to produce his best football in his push for a recall.
Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, he said: "The national team? We have touched upon this many times, but Lippi is the coach, and he has to decide,
"I will always give my availability for selection, but I cannot hold a gun to his head."
Italy's next World Cup qualification match will be on September 5 against Georgia.
Beretta elected as league chief
Maurizio Beretta has been elected new president of the Lega Calcio after receiving the backing of the majority of Serie A and B clubs.
He received 36 of a possible 40 votes in today's election.
Beretta was earlier this year appointed interim president of the "Lega Calcio Serie A", the breakaway league being established by the clubs in Italy's top flight.
The new Lega Calcio Serie A is not expected to become functional until July 2010.

Berlusconi: We have great squad
AC Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi has defended the Rossoneri's transfer dealings this summer.
The Serie A outfit have signed Thiago Silva from Fluminense, Oguchi Onyewu from Standard Liege, Flavio Roma from Monaco and Klaas Jan Huntelaar from Real Madrid.
However, the Rossoneri have failed to lure their main targets of Sevilla striker Luis Fabiano and Wolfsburg hitman Edin Dzeko after reportedly not making attractive offers.
Berlusconi said: "I am in complete disagreement with those that think that Milan has taken a backstage pass in the transfer market.
"At Milan, we have two squads of great level, a total of 29 players."
Berlusconi has high expectations Brazilian star Ronaldinho will deliver after a slow start to his Milan career last term.
"I am delighted with Ronaldinho," Berlusconi said. "I would not exchange him for any player.
"Wherever he is on the pitch he always does two or three extraordinary things."
Milan face city rivals and defending champions Inter Milan on Saturday.

Diego: Juve ready for Roma
Juventus midfielder Diego believes that his side is prepared to take on Roma, and will look for a win.
Speaking to Tuttosport, Diego said: "The game against Roma will be like a final and our objective is to go there to win the game."
Still buzzing from their 1-0 win against Chievo, the Old Lady will travel to Rome with full confidence of bagging more points.
"We have to play with the same intensity we showed against Chievo. We want to win in order to confirm our winning spirit away from home."
With Roma captain Francesco Totti likely to be match fit and eager to rain on Juve's parade, Diego still had praise for the former Italy international.
"Totti? He is a great player and I like him a lot.
"I have always liked Totti, and I admire his story because he has always been the symbol of Romanisti," Diego said.
Materazzi: Milan Are Favourites To Win The Derby
Inter defender Marco Materazzi believes his side will be the underdogs in the Milan derby on Saturday night.
The stopper is expecting an explosive atmosphere in the San Siro. Despite beating Milan in pre-season, 'Matrix' feels the bitter rivals from across town have the upper hand heading into the clash.
"They have three points, we only have one, therefore they are the favourites," Materazzi told Sky Sport Italia.
"I can't hear the noise of the enemy, but I can see the colours of the opposition. The derby is always the derby, no matter where and no matter at what temperature it's played in.
"The atmosphere will always be hot, whether you play in August or in December."
Sneijder sad but excited with move
Wesley Sneijder feels he is swapping "one great club for another" as he completes his move from Real Madrid to Inter Milan.
Speaking to Marca about the seemingly imminent switch, Sneijder admits it is not easy to say goodbye to Madrid after two years at the Bernabeu but insists he is now looking forward to his new life at the San Siro.
"I'm going with my head high. I'm going to a great team, there's no doubt about that. I've been very happy here but now I have to look ahead and focus on my new team," said the former Ajax midfielder, who is set to bid farewell to his Madrid team-mates at their Valdebebas training ground this morning.
"The truth is that I was very happy here, it's something I cannot deny. It makes me sad to go but that's the way it is. That's life. Now the only thing I can say is that I'm happy. I'm changing one great club for another great club."
Although Sneijder preferred not to talk too much about the circumstances surrounding his exit from Madrid, he admitted he found it odd that the club were willing to sell him even though coach Manuel Pellegrini appeared to want him to stay.
"What has happened with me is something very strange. The coach said he counted on me but there are people at the club who don't," said Sneijder, who admits to having been left with a bad taste in the mouth.
"They have treated me very badly but I prefer not to talk about it.
"I'm going to give everything there (Inter). Life and football move on."
Mou is more than ready for Milan
Inter Coach Jose Mourinho says tomorrow's training session is practically useless because his team is already prepared for Milan.
Speaking at a BMW showroom, Mourinho said: “If I am here instead of being closed in at Appiano worrying myself about the derby watching DVD after DVD it means either I am not worried about the derby or I have nothing to prepare.
“I have clear ideas on the formation. We are well prepared and tomorrow's training session is almost useless because we have finished our work.
“We await the derby more than calmly because we have a lot of desire to play it and I am convinced that Milan also have a lot of desire to play this challenge.
“There will be a full stadium and it will be a great image for all of Europe,” Mourinho added before moving on to talk about new signing Wesley Sneijder.
“If he manages to do all the tests and trains tomorrow, he can become an option and obviously he will be selected,” Mourinho concluded.

TEAM NEWS
AS Roma
Mirko Vucinic, Julio Baptista, Simone Perrotta and Juan have all recovered from various knocks. Baptista's fitness still isn't 100% though and his appearance is in doubt. Vucinic made his return midweek against Kosice. He showed signs of form after hitting the post during his short time on the pitch and so he is in contention. Juan should be available for selection, he has been training well and could start at the back. Vitorinio Antunes is struggling with an ankle problem though and he is unlikely to feature.
Probable Starting XI: Artur - Motta, Mexes, Burdisso, Riise - Taddei, Pizarro, De Rossi - Francesco Totti, Vucinic, Menez
Juventus
Felipe Melo has shrugged off a thigh problem and he is ready to travel to Rome after doing well in Friday's training session. There were similar fears for Diego, but he has also made a recovery and stands a chance of playing. Mohamed Sissoko (foot) and Jonathan Zebina (ankle) are unavailable. There are no suspensions for the away team. Sebastian Giovinco seems to have recovered from his thigh strain, but his appearance is not guaranteed. Tiago has a foot problem and is doubtful. Hasan Salihamidzic is still training in the gym.
Probable Starting XI: Buffon - Grygera, Cannavaro, Chiellini, De Ceglie - Camoranesi, Poulsen, Marchisio - Diego Ribas, Amauri, Alex Del Piero
PREDICTION: AS Roma 2-2 Juventus
Mourinho: We are ready for AC
Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho has claimed his side are more than ready for Saturday's crunch derby with bitter rivals AC Milan.
The former Porto and Chelsea boss is aware that the pressure is on Inter to retain the title they won so convincingly last season, however the Portuguese supremo is adamant that all is well ahead of the San Siro clash.
Speaking to reporters during a promotional function on Friday, Mourinho declared: "If I am here instead of being closed in worrying myself about the derby watching DVD after DVD it means either I am not worried about the derby or I have nothing to prepare.
"I have clear ideas on the formation. We are well prepared and we have finished our work.
"We await the derby more than calmly because we have a lot of desire to play it and I am convinced that Milan also have a lot of desire to play this challenge."
The two Italian heavyweights have already met this summer, a game that saw Inter win 2-0 in the United States thanks to a brace from Diego Milito.
