    Exclusive GTA IV Preview On MTV.com

    MTV.com has a brand new exclusive preview of GTAIV up on their website. There's also two exclusive screenshots on their site.

    * Totilo spent two hours playing the game.
    * An in-game text message was replied to by the editor.
    * Totilo said that he thought the Statue of Happiness looked a lot like Hillary Clinton.
    * "Extra guns and health packs don't float a few inches above the ground, waiting to be walked through. They lie on flat surfaces, waiting to be picked up. A Rockstar rep told MTV News that the developers didn't even want those found items to glow, as they do now, because that's not realistic. But a concession was made so players could more easily identify what they could and should try to grab in this world."
    * "GTA IV felt less like a video game because there is no "Mission Complete" graphical flourish as there had been in old games, just a brief instrumental riff to indicate a job's successful finish. Icons in the upper-right corner of the screen still display the player's equipped weapon and money, but they are reduced in size, subdued to blacks, grays and whites, doing as little as possible to distract the player's eyes."
    * "We took a helicopter for a joyride, in this case, in the PS3 build, traversing the city with haste, thrusting with the R2 button, rudder-turning with L1 and R1. The scenery was viewable from an optional in-cockpit, first-person view, the densely detailed Liberty City rolling by so quickly underneath that it's little wonder that the private jets parked at the game's airport are not usable. They'd be too fast for this game's amount of real estate. Mostly we used the helicopter to land on skyscrapers and in busy intersections, the rotor blades magically hurting no one — not the least of whom Niko, despite what would probably be classified as hard landings."
    First GTAIV Multiplayer Details Emerge!

    PSM Spain has an exciting new article in it's latest issue, with 20 new screenshots and a decent amount of information on GTA IV's multiplayer modes. Here's a quick summary of the new info, and below that, a list of the multiplayer modes.

    * There are 15 multiplayer game modes in GTA IV. PSM played 7 of them. The rules of each game are set by the host.
    * There is support for up to 16 players.
    * Your online character is fully customizable. You can alter his race, sex, hair, clothing etc.
    * In Race and GTA Race, the host gets to decide the vehicles you can use, number of laps etc. You're able to shoot and throw molotovs from the window, and also steal opponents' cars.
    * In Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, the host gets to decide the number of pedestrians, amount of traffic, police (on or off), and type of weapons
    * In Cops N Crooks, one team are cops, the other, crooks. Cops must stop the crooks from escaping. They can monitor the locations of the crooks on their GPS. Crooks don't know where the cops are.
    * In Mafia Work and Team Mafia Work, you play as one of Kenny Petrovic's mafia henchmen. You must complete hits ordered by the boss (via the cellphone) before your opponents can.
    * Hangman's NOOSE features co-op play. You and a friend will be able to escort a mobster, while being pursued by a SWAT team.

    New Multiplayer Preview in OXM

    US publication Official Xbox Magazine has a new GTA IV multiplayer preview in its latest issue. The preview shows two new pieces of artwork, and 8 new screenshots. Not much of the information inside is new but here's some points worth mentioning:

    * Jeronimo Barrera, a senior developer at Rockstar, says it takes testers playing 4 hours a day "a good 2 weeks to get through the whole single-player game."
    * Rockstar's Steve Hahnel says the ambition of GTA IV is the reason the game was delayed. Multiplayer was one of the main reasons for the delay, with network code and components needing to be written and maintained etc. Gameplay needed to be balanced, and "an authentic Liberty City had to be created for 16 players to explore and destroy simultaneously."
    * In multiplayer the host also gets to configure options such as the weather, vehicles, spawn locations, friendly fire, and even decide if auto-aim can be used.
    * Voice chat options can also be tweaked, the options are:
    o Everyone hears you.
    o Only players on the same team hear each other.
    o Proximity chat (only players close by can hear you).
    * Health, armour and monetary pick-ups are available during multiplayer. The cash determines your online rank - from 0 to 10. Killing people and stealing their money boosts your online credibility.
    * You can use the entirety of Liberty City during multiplayer, but if you die you will respawn in the area that the host has set.
    * You can apparently skim rockets across the ground if aimed correctly.
    * Shooting and driving simultaneously is allegedly quite difficult.

    MCV have today revealed that the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has given GTA IV the 18 rating, similar to almost all the other GTA games. The title is now cleared for release on April 29th in the UK.

    The first man to finish GTA IV

    Rob Taylor, deputy editor of Xbox World 360 magazine, is the first games writer to finish GTA IV. Read his interview at Gamesradar.com - Don't worry, there are no spoilers. This is what he had to say about the experience.

    On spoilers...
    * Generally though, it'd be a shame to ruin the surprises for anyone else; GTA IV single player simply has to be played on your lonesome to be fully appreciate it for what it is: a true milestone in videogames. Without giving away any spoilers; lots! I think, overall though, it'll be three overall things that entrance GTA fans like never before. [The city, Niko Bellic, and multiplayer.]

    On play time...
    * So we got the call from Rockstar to come up on the March 26 and play for three straight days in a row – including a Saturday! We'd usually kick off at 9 or 10ish in the morning, play until 8 or 9 at night, then go eat, then crash before getting up the next morning and do it all over again. Sat in front of a 60" LCD screen in a dark room for nigh on 30 hours – now that's hardcore! Every GTA fan's dream though, huh?

    On total game time...
    * I finished the story mode in 24 hours, without skipping cut scenes, but I literally blitzed through and hardly took on any side missions. If I was to play it again, I'd say to wrap up the story will take at least 40 hours at a normal pace, plus another – say, 25? – to wrap up the remainder of the missions.

    On multiplayer...
    * Rather than simply go with the whole Deathmatch and Capture the Flag stuff, they've genuinely taken their time creating some amazing new modes that'll do the business online. Mafiya (a chaotic, mission based affair), Cops 'n' Crooks (one team try to capture the other) and Hangman's Noose (players team up to take an army of AI SWAT troops) were our personal faves...

    The best GTA game to date?
    * GTA IV. By a country mile. It craps on all the others – even the mighty Vice City – from a height equivalent to the Statue of Happiness. Believe me, GTA IV is even better than the hype suggests! It's certainly tighter, both in terms of the way Liberty city is structured and the way in which the narrative feels more movie-like than before. Otherwise, everything feels as if it's been given the next-gen treatment; in particular the driving and shooting are light years ahead of past GTAs. Overall, it's a stratospheric leap forward, beyond anything I'd imagined.


    Overall, Rob Taylor could not say enough good things about GTA IV! Only 24 days remain until we get to live the game for ourselves.

    New Information Revealed in C&VG

    Gaming website ComputerAndVideoGames.com has posted an article about their experience with GTA IV's Liberty City. Information revealed includes:

    * Mini-games confirmed for GTA IV include pool, basketball, darts, golfing at driving ranges and arcade games, such as Go Go Space Monkey, which was also featured in San Andreas.
    * The trucking company from San Andreas, RS Haul, returns and missions based around the company have returned as well.
    * 'Gruppe Sechs' securicars have returned and players are able to steal them and deliver them to locations for a reward, but this task is said to be much trickier than in previous games.
    * The game features many references to 'Crackdown,' a GTA-style game available for the Xbox 360 which also uses RenderWare, GTA's previous engine.
    * Vehicles such as the Stallion and Comet from previous games appear in IV, as well as the NRG500, a motorcycle. A new motorcycle called the NHG900RR is also confirmed to be in the game and is rumored to be the fastest one available.
    * GTA IV contains photos of Vice City, similar to the maps found scattered around San Andreas. References to previous GTA games through graffiti is also spread throughout the city.
    * Binco, Burger Shot, 24-7 and Clucking Bell are all returning, in addition to many other brands from previous GTA games. 'Alderney' features several strip malls where you can purchase food, clothing, and more.
    * New York City-style news tickers on buildings will be constantly updated based on what crimes you commit in the game.
    * There are several innuendos and references to the Hot Coffee mod for San Andreas.
    * As previously mentioned, pedestrian actions will be incredibly varied and detailed compared to previous games.
    * "Flushing Meadows (site of the NY World's Fair) is featured in its entirety, as is a recreation of theme park Astroland at Coney Island. Rides such as the Corpse Ride and Cyclone can be tested, and the major tourist spots will play a part in some missions."
    * Sprunk can be purchased, as in San Andreas, to replenish your health.
    * Similarly to Saints Row, yet another GTA-style sandbox game, phone numbers are scattered throughout the city and you can call them for whatever services they entail.
    * A place called the Videogeddon Arcade allows you to play arcade games and posters attacking violent video games can be seen.
    * The 'sky tram' featured on the box-art for GTA IV can actually be used as a mode of transportation, although it costs money as do the taxis.

    GTA IV is gold, new information revealed

    Grand Theft Auto IV is finally finished and ready to go.

    During Take-Two's shareholder's meeting earlier today, it was announced that GTA IV has "gone gold," and according to Take-Two CEO Ben Feder,
    [Grand Theft Auto IV is] in production and in trucks en route to retailers.
    This is certainly good news as it ends any rumor of delay or intervention by Electronic Arts, who attempted multiple times to buy Take-Two to make a profit on Grand Theft Auto IV.

    New information about the game was also revealed when Lazlow was interviewed on the Opie and Anthony show today:

    * The Xbox 360's downloadable content is confirmed to contain new missions, new characters, and new comedy acts.
    * You can use the in-game websites to go on dates with people in the game.
    * If Niko is shot in the leg, he will realistically limp and bleed from the location of the wound.

    GamesRadar GTA IV audio Q&A

    GamesRadar have managed to get themselves an audio Q&A with Matthew Smith, Craig Conner and Will Morton, three senior members of the Rockstar North Audio team.

    The article talks about the ambient sounds in the game, pedestrian dialogue and the soundtrack of the game. There article is a pretty interesting read, here are some notable quotes from it:

    * Most of the time what you hear is really happening - what’s so great about GTA IV from an audio team’s perspective is that you hardly ever need to fake anything – the world’s so rich and so busy, that if you make individual things sound right, the whole ambience pretty much just appears by itself.
    * Gunfire is a good example of how complex videogame audio has become; a single gunshot typically consists of around 10 individual components, whose volume and placement we control independently with distance, to create a bright, wide, punchy sound up-close, and a more reverberant, muffled sound at a distance. For multiplayer, we balance this so that guns only really sound dangerously beefy when they’re at a distance you can be hit from, so it’s intuitive what’s threatening and what’s someone else’s private war.
    * It’s difficult to quantify how many speaking parts there are, but at our last count there were over 740 unique voices in the game. There are over 80,000 individual lines of dialogue, more than 7000 of which are Niko’s lines. If you were to listen to each line back to back, it would take over 29 hours. Also, these figures don’t take the radio, TV, and mo-capped cut-scene dialogue into consideration.
    * We also decided to make the pedestrian dialogue more realistic in GTA4. As an example, peds in previous games would walk around and randomly chat to themselves if they weren’t doing much else. In real life, people (generally!) don’t go around talking to themselves, so we dropped this behavior from GTA4. However, we realized that the random chat of old GTA games was a good way for the player to pick-up on what sort of personality a ped has, so we created the cell-phone conversations in GTA4 as one realistic way of portraying personality.
    * The DJS have far more AI than previous titles. They know what time of day it is, what the weather is like and what’s going on in LC. They've even done their research on their playlists, some of their own tracks appears on them. In fact all the DJS are either famous singers or musicians (or both.) They have plenty to say about their chosen genre of music as they've lived it, loved it, or are living it.

    Games Aktuell review GTA IV

    German magazine Games Aktuell have reviewed Grand Theft Auto IV and given their verdict on the game. The review is actually based on their preview sessions at R* earlier and not on the final retail version of the game, though they still include the review screenshots (seen in OXM and OPM).

    * Graphics: 9/10
    The gigantic size of the city makes you forget the few graphical imperfections of the game.
    * Sound: 10/10
    Best GTA soundtrack ever, and probably the most compelling feature in the game.
    * Controls: 8/10
    Far from perfect but a big step from the previous GTA games.
    * Multiplayer: 9/10
    Great concept and innovative integration with the single-player mode.
    * Gameplay: 10/10
    We can't score it 11/10...
    * Conclusion:
    GTA4 is by far the best action game ever created.

    The French magazine PSM3 reviewed GTA IV in their latest issue. Expect the number of reviews to grow immensely as we approach the release of IV, with a little over a week left before it hits stores worldwide.

    The review points do contain a minor spoiler (the description of another mission) so it will be displayed at the bottom of the list:

    * On the PS3, the L2 and R2 buttons (LT/RT for the 360) are used to break and accelerate this time around.
    * The underground subway is confirmed to be usable in IV.
    * You are able to buy weapons at stores, but whether the stores are called "Ammu-Nation" as in previous GTAs is unknown.
    * As is already known, you are able to buy clothes at various stores in Liberty City, just like in San Andreas. However, unlike San Andreas, when you want to try on an item of clothing, Niko won't go back into the changing room for a few seconds while the game loads the textures like CJ did. The new apparel will be displayed instantly.
    * When rendering at 1080p, the game looks amazing and the city is so detailed that you could wonder around for hours at a time without an objective and find interesting new things
    * Pay 'n' Spray locations will not affect your wanted level when you use them this time around, but they are still available for repainting your vehicle.
    * PSM3 France called it the "Best game ever made" and gave it a perfect 20/20 score.

    MINOR SPOILER:
    * Just like III, Vice City, and San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto IV includes a mission involving a bank heist. PSM3 said that escaping involves use of the subways.



    The only grievance PSM3 had with the game was the aiming system. The magazine claimed that aiming felt 'heavy' at times, but because of how immersive IV is and how much of an improvement the controls are from previous games, that this is barely noticeable.
    IGN: The City that Never Sleeps

    IGN has posted up an article today with an interview with someone from Rockstar named Aaron Garbut. It is definitely worth a read, it explains Liberty City in full detail. He also explains how the game will be nothing like the other GTA's besides the general feel. The article also has some new screenshots up that will be shortly added to our screenshots section.

    OXM and Xbox World 360 review GTA IV

    Two more publications have reviewed the next installment of Grand Theft Auto, (which is only a week away from release), both of which have given the game amazing and near-perfect scores. First up was the U.S. version of Official Xbox Magazine (OXM), the review was obviously favorable. The final verdict was a 9.5/10. Their conclusion:

    * + Wounderful environment with gajillions of great things to do.
    * + Multiplayer is a deep, terrific addition to the series.
    * - Would be even better with a little editing: it starts slowly, has a few too many «filler» missions.



    Xbox World 360 (U.K.) scored the game a 98%/100%, which is said to be their highest score ever given. Their conclusion:

    * + Oscar-worthy dialogue
    * + unfeasibly rich game world
    * + inspired mission design



    Both reviews have quite a few mission and story details, and even include achievement details, Easter-egg details, and more. Be sure to check them out whenever you see them at your local shop.
    GTA IV: Animating the World

    Now that GTA IV has gone gold GameSpot has had time to interrogate a couple of Rockstar Games employees and has shared some new info in the article as well:

    * Completely controllable skeleton (ex: can move all five fingers).
    * The lighting in the game has opened the door to "more cinematic cutscenes".
    * The animation team is double than San Andreas animations team.

    IGN previews GTA IV multiplayer

    IGN is offering coverage of Grand Theft Auto IV all this week, and their latest preview includes extensive details on the game's multiplayer modes.

    You begin in a standoff with the other players. Everyone spawns in a circle and there is, at least the first time you play Free Mode, a brief moment of surprise when no one does a damn thing. This lasts a few seconds before someone takes out a gun and shoots their neighbor in the face. But this standoff isn't just to start the killing (and jump people around the city with their first respawn); it also allows players to talk about what they want to do in Free Mode.
