Designed with freeriders and other gravity fiends in mind, the IT-1 uses an innovative means to transfer the riders pedaling forces into motion. Based around a modified Shimano Nexus 8-speed hub assembly, the transmission is centrally mounted in the frame. This transmission eliminates the need for a derailleur and cassette. Benefiting from the removal of these parts, the bike is less prone to damage and the unsprung weight is reduced.
«We’re very excited that the IT-1 is now going into production» states Mark Peterman, GT’s Director of Product Development. «It’s been a long road for us, having first shown the bike at Interbike ’97. We feel the bike is rider ready and will be available for purchase in the fall of 2005. I think that the delivery of this model should be proof that GT and Pacific are serious about bringing the kind of technology to the IBD market that GT was famous for. Look for more revolutionary models coming from the GT Technical division in next 6 months.»
Robert Stemen, Research & Development Manger and IT-1 Engineer ads «The results we’ve been getting from testing have been very positive. This technology is brand new for a production bicycle; consumers have never seen anything like this up close. We’re excited to see where internal transmissions will end up in the future of bicycle technology.»
The bikes are currently scheduled to go into production in August. Expect to see the complete bike built around the very best from Fox Suspension, Shimano components, Sun Rims, Kenda Tires, SDG saddle/post and more. Pricing has not been finalized, but $5000 is targeted.
