SERIE A 2008/2009: START ON 31 AUGUST
The 2008-09 Serie A season will start on 31 August and finish on 31 May 2009. The Lega council established that today. There will be three midweek rounds: 24 september, 29 october, and 28 january. There will also be three international breaks for World Cup qualifying games: 7 september, 12 october, and 29 march 2009. The Christmas break will be between 21 December and 11 January.
AC Milan look to agree terms with Barcelona on Zambrotta
World Cup-winning Italian full-back Gianluca Zambrotta could soon be joining the ranks of giants AC Milan, if the club can agree terms with Barcelona.
"The difference is 2 million euros. The player hopes to come to Milan and the Barcelona management is aware of it", said a spokesman from an Italian football association.
"But Barca is an extremely expensive 'boutique'. They have no sooner opened the bidding than they are up 30, 40, or 50 million - figures that are not compatible with any budget", he added.
The Italian club last week signed France's rising star Mathieu Flamini, after the 24-year-old refused to sign a new contract with Arsenal.
AC Milan failed to make the cut for next season's Champions League competition after finishing fifth in the Scudetto, and will now compete in the UEFA Cup.

Ancelotti To Chelsea, Lippi To Milan?
According to Leggo, Carlo Ancelotti could take over as the new manager of Chelsea, with Marcello Lippi replacing him at Milan.
The Italian and English press has gone into overdrive in the past week following the dismissals of Avram Grant and Roberto Mancini at Chelsea and Inter respectively.
While Jose Mourinho is nailed on to take over the reigns at the Italian champions, a whole host of names, including Guus Hiddink, Sven Goran Eriksson, Lippi, Mancini, and Ancelotti have been linked with the Chelsea job.
According to today’s edition of Leggo, Ancelotti could leave AC Milan in order to take over at Stamford Bridge. The Rossoneri tactician was spotted with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich in Geneva earlier this week, and while he claims that he was only there on holiday rather than to talk about a potential move to West London, it seems there may have indeed been more behind the rendezvous.
Milan have prepared for the possible exit of Ancelotti by lining up legendary coach Marcello Lippi as his replacement.
The 60-year-old has been out of work since leading Italy to World Cup glory in 2006, but he would relish the chance to work with the San Siro giants.
AC Milan say Ancelotti not taking over at Chelsea
AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has said their coach Carlo Ancelotti will not be taking over the vacant Chelsea manager's job, the Italian first division club said on their website.
Ancelotti's name has been touted as a replacement for Avram Grant who was axed by the Stamford Bridge club although coming close to winning both the European Champions League and English Premiership title this season.
Galliani said the London club had contacted them but that they had not allowed Chelsea to meet Ancelotti.
Galliani told the club's website, www.acmilan.com: "Chelsea? No, they didn't meet with him because they asked our permission and there everything halted.
"Him and another Italian coach were on top of Chelsea's wish list and the fact our coach is sought after and well seen gives me great pleasure. But Carlo Ancelotti is and will stay Milan's coach."
Drogba Talks Have Begun - Galliani
The Blues hit-man has been looking to leave the club since the departure of former coach and great mentor Jose Mourinho early on in the season.
Having been linked with all of European football's major heavyweights, many suspected the Cote d'Ivoire star's new club would be the same as Jose's, but with the Portuguese now bound for Internazionale, the favourites to sign Drogba are their city rivals Milan.
Milan have not been afraid of emphasising their need for a striker or two this summer, with Amauri - now officially of Juventus - being linked, along with the less likely Luca Toni, former club legend Andriy Shevchenko (who is now also of Chelsea, much against his own will it would seem), as well as Samuel Eto'o, Emmanuel Adebayor, Mario Gomez, Karim Benzema and of course Drogba, among others.
It seems as if the former Marseille man is their number one target, with Galliani revealing today that negotiations have now begun.
"[Milan coach] Carlo Ancelotti wants Drogba. He does," revealed Galliani. "I do not see anything wrong in a transfer, talks have already begun."

Milan Set To Be Handed Champions League Place
Milan are on the verge of being handed a place in next season’s Champions League as a replacement for Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia.
The Rossoneri missed out on a place in Europe’s premier club competition after they only finished fifth in Serie A, following a hugely disappointing campaign.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men, who have been the dominant side in the competition over the past six years, winning two editions, and reaching a final, semi-final and quarter-final, were gearing themselves to play in the UEFA Cup in 2008/09.
However the Diavoli could now be on the verge of being granted a sensational back-door entry back into the Champions League. Bulgarian champions CSKA Sofia could be expelled from the competition due to financial problems.
CSKA have been denied a license to play in the Bulgarian league, and the Bulgarian FA (BFU) has now demanded that they be expelled from Europe too.
The normal procedure is that the BFU send the runner-up Levski Sofia to the CL instead, however it is reported that instead of this, the highest UEFA ranked team not already in the competition will be the replacement, and this is Milan.
The Rossoneri would enter at the second preliminary round, and it would mean that Italy would have five teams in the Champions League, the others being Inter, Roma, Juventus and Fiorentina.
Adebayor Agrees Milan MoveMilan are well known to be in the market for a top class centre forward, and a couple of weeks ago Coach Carlo Ancelotti announced that the club would be signing one out of Samuel Eto’o, Didier Drogba, Adebayor or Amauri.
With the latter having since joined Juventus, only three of these possibilities remain, and according to sources in Italy, it is Adebayor who will be filling the gap in the Rossoneri frontline.
Adebayor has come to an agreement over personal terms to join the Diavoli, and all that is required to complete the deal is for Milan to meet Arsenal’s asking price, which is set at a cool €40m.
Silvio Berlusconi and Adriano Galliani would ideally like to lower this price, but are prepared to break the bank having recently vowed to spend big this summer.
Only a few days ago, Adebayor vowed to stay at Arsenal.
“I came to Arsenal with a mission to succeed," he explained.
"I’ve assured the gaffer Arsène Wenger I’ll stay because I believe in the team and I want to assure the fans my concentration is here. I have no reason to leave so I’ll stay to ensure that together we’ll win silverware."
Mathieu Flamini has already joined Milan on a free transfer this summer, while Aliaksandr Hleb seems almost certain to follow him out of the exit door. If Adebayor were to leave too, it would certainly be an almost irreparable blow to Arsenal ahead of the 2008/09 season.
Galliani: Ancelotti Rejected ChelseaSpeculation was rife earlier this week that Ancelotti was on the verge of taking over at Stamford Bridge, before the speculation was shown to be false.
However Galliani has admitted that Chelsea were very interested in luring the Milan boss to West London."It's true that Chelsea were interested in Ancelotti, I knew it too,” said the transfer guru.
"But in the end Ancelotti said no.
"Peter Kenyon spoke to me and has reiterated that as long as Milan will not let Ancelotti go, they will not take any action. They are very correct and we maintain a good rapport."

A host of other Italian coaches have been strongly linked with the job, including Fiorentina’s Cesare Prandelli and particularly Roma’s Luciano Spalletti. Of course, Roberto Mancini continues to be a front-runner.
Galliani: Chelsea Have Given Drogba Nod

Galliani earlier this week told Sky Sports that his meeting with Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon was based around the transfer market, but only today have more details come to light.
The transfer guru spoke to the Gazzetta dello Sport about his discussions with the London club, revealing that Ivorian hitman Didier Drogba is near the top of their list.
"Chelsea have given us authorisation to open negotiations with Drogba," he said.
However, the vice-president revealed that another Milan target, Andrei Shevchenko, will not be returning to San Siro.
"Unfortunately, we received the response that we feared. Chelsea will not put Andrei up for sale. This conclusion is upsetting."
Meanwhile Galliani confirmed once again that the rossoneri are in talks with unsettled Barcelona star Samuel Eto'o.

AC Milan want to do as much as they can to acquire Arsenal player Adebayor and according to British newspaper the "Daily Telegraph" would have in store a mega offer of thirty-two million pounds (just over 40 million euros) to ensure the Togolese striker.
