Gomez to stay at Stuttgart

Mario Gomez has ended speculation surrounding his future by pledging to remain with Stuttgart for at least another season.

"There was a lot of speculation in recent weeks about my future," he told his official website. "I was asked by some people to clearly state my loyalty to Stuttgart.

"There is no need to leave anything unclear because I have not once said that I planned to leave the club this summer.

"I have a contract with VfB Stuttgart.

"Clearly, I am honoured by the interest from some leading European clubs but, as I said months ago, if I move, everything has to be just right.

"I am sure that time will come but there is nothing more to say in that respect."

Dortmund see off Feyenoord

Borussia Dortmund made a winning start to the Feyenoord Jubilee Tournament as they beat the hosts 2-1.

It was Poland international Jakub Blaszczykowski who netted the goal with a magnificent finish from the edge of the area.

Dortmund looked likely to add to their lead until Feyenoord equalised against the run of play on 41 minutes, 17-year-old Georgino Wijnaldum slamming a shot into the bottom left corner from 20 yards.

Feyenoord's Diego Biseswar curled a delightful effort against the crossbar before the break, but the Dutch team were pushed onto the back foot again at the start of the second half.

Chances came and went at either end as the match moved towards its conclusion but Sebastian Hille secured the win for Dortmund 11 minutes from time with a cool finish.

Dortmund will lift the trophy if they can beat Tottenham on Sunday, after Juande Ramos' side saw off Celtic earlier on Friday.

Boruc happy to stay put

Artur Boruc has revealed there was no point in him leaving Celtic as he is happy with life at Parkhead.

The Polish shot-stopper was linked with a move away from Celtic over the summer, with the likes of Milan credited with holding an interest.

However, Boruc says he decided to stay on because he would struggle to find the challenges he has at Celtic elsewhere.

"There was lots of talk about me leaving in the summer but I'm still here and I'm happy with that," Boruc told the Daily Record.

Ribery voted German footballer of the year

Bayern Munich's French midfielder Franck Ribery has been voted German footballer of the year, according to a poll to be published in sports magazine Kicker on Thursday.

Ribery, who joined the German first division giants from Marseille last year, garnered 224 votes from Bundesliga players and managers, beating second-placed German international captain Michael Ballack by 109 votes.

He becomes only the second foreign player to win the award since its inception in 1960, the Brazilian Ailton winning the title in 2004.

"It's good for a sportsman to be recognized for his performances. But I have to say that the titles won last year by the team are far more important", said the Frenchman, currently recovering from an operation to his left ankle.

Ribery, 25-year-old, was part of the French national squad that came runners-up in the 2006 World Cup finals, going on to win the French Player of the Year award 12 months later.

Bayern won the league and cup double last season and are hoping to make a big impression in the Champions League under new coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

Overmars returns to professional football

Former Arsenal player Marc Overmars is making a return to professional football. The winger will be joining Dutch First Division side Go Ahead Eagles, where it all started in 1990.

Overmars retired after the 2004 European Championship but made a successful appearance in Jaap Stam's testimonial match last month.

The Dutchman then received an offer from Go Ahead Eagles, one that wasn't rejected.

The 35-year-old left winger spent most of his career playing for Ajax, Arsenal and FC Barcelona. With Ajax he won the Champions League in 1995.

Monaco snap up Simic

Croatia international Dario Simic has signed for Monaco on a two-year contract.

The 32-year-old has passed a medical and sealed his switch from Milan.

Simic is close to earning a century of caps for his country and is vastly experienced at international level.

Celtic were also rumoured to be in the running for the 32-year-old, who has represented both Milan giants.

Monaco wanted the player to stiffen their backline and bring a touch of quality to the side and he looks certain to be a big hit in Ligue 1.

Marcelinho To Flamengo- Official

The Bundesliga has lost one of its most colourful figures with the news that Wolfsburg captain Marcelinho is to move to Flamengo in his homeland.

“I am sad to be leaving because I’ve had a wonderful time here in Wolfsburg” Marcelinho explained. “Bit I’m looking forward to my new task. It is a huge challenge to win titles with Flamengo.” the 33 year old added.

The five times Brazilian league champions have had to buy-out the remaining portion of Marcelinho’s contract which ran until 2009. It is expected to set them back around €1 million.

“Marcelinho’s departure is a big loss for us and the Bundesliga as a whole” said Wolfsburg trainer Felix Magath. “I had the impression that he wanted to move and I didn’t want to stand in his way.”

Magath already has a ready made replacement up his sleeve with Zvejezdan Misimovic arriving from Nürnberg during the summer. It remains to be seen whether the club go out and buy another midfielder.

Marcelinho joined the club in January 2007 from Turkish side Trabzonspor. He appeared in 50 games for the Wölfe and scored 12 goals.

In 2007 his goals helped secure Bundesliga survival and then as captain last season, he led them to Uefa Cup qualification following their fifth place finish.

Bayern captaincy for Van Bommel

Bayern Munich coach Jurgen Klinsmann has announced Holland midfielder Mark van Bommel will replace Oliver Kahn as captain.

The 31-year-old has been with the German giants since he moved there from FC Barcelona 2 years ago, and he played a key part in Bayern's title win last season.

The versatile Van Bommel can speak Dutch, German, Spanish and English and becomes the first foreign player to skipper the Bavarian club.

The Dutchman has made 56 appearances for the Bavarian club since joining in 2006.

Engelaar out for Bundesliga opener

Schalke 04 midfielder Orlando Engelaar will be missing the start of the Bundesliga season as result of a knee injury suffered this week.

The Dutchman injured his knee during the Champions League qualification match with Atletico Madrid, and tests now point out that recovery might take a while.

The player joined Schalke 04 earlier this summer from FC Twente, after a good performance with Holland at Euro 2008.

Schalke begin their Bundesliga campaign on Saturday, at home with Hannover 96.

Bundesliga switch for Zidan and Petric

Bundesliga clubs SV Hamburg and Borussia Dortmund announced Sunday they were exchanging their respective strikers Mohamed Zidan and Mladen Petric.

"I'm really delighted to be able to play for Hamburg now", said Croatian international Petric.

Egypt's Zidan, 26-year-old, added: "Of course it's a bit of a pity that I'm leaving Hamburg and the club, but I think it's a good decision for me. I need to play and to continue to develop."

Petric will be officially presented when he returns from Maribor where Croatia play Slovenia on Thursday.

Gravesen exits Celtic

Scottish champions Celtic confirmed Monday they are parting company with Danish midfielder Thomas Gravesen.

The 32-year-old signed from Real Madrid in August 2006 but was unable to establish himself in the first team at Celtic.

He returned to former club Everton on loan last season but failed to win a permanent move to Goodison.

Gravesen was given a surprise start in a pre-season friendly against Manchester City but was not involved in either SPL game against Saint Mirren and Dundee United.
