AVB back in England with Spurs
Andre Villas-Boas has agreed a deal to become the new manager for Tottenham Hotspur.
A post on the club's official Twitter account read: "The club is delighted to announce Andre Villas-Boas as head coach".
Sky Sports News reports that the former Chelsea manager flew in to London overnight to put pen-to-paper on the contract - the terms were not disclosed.
They also claim he was the only candidate Spurs considered as the ideal replacement for Harry Redknapp. The former Portsmouth manager parted company with the north London club after almost 4 years in charge at White Hart Lane last month after failing to agree a new contract with chairman Daniel Levy.
Villas-Boas was sacked from his role as Chelsea manager last season but has an impressive record with FC Porto including 45 wins from 51 games in their 2010/2011 season.
Villas-Boas will be hoping to rebuild his reputation at Spurs after succeeding Harry Redknapp, who left the post last month after 4 years at the helm.

Van Persie won't extend Arsenal deal
Arsenal captain Robin Van Persie has confirmed he will not be signing a new contract at the Premier League club.
Van Persie's future has long been the subject of speculation, with the likes of Manchester City and Juventus rumoured to have made enquiries for the striker who has one year left to run on his current deal at Emirates Stadium.
The 29-year-old has now informed fans through his website that he will not be extending his stay in north London, saying his meeting with manager Arsene Wenger earlier this year had left him questioning how the club was moving forward.
The news will come as a bitter blow to Wenger, who said on Tuesday that it was imperative to keep the PFA Player of the Year with Arsenal "at all costs".
A string of clubs across Europe are likely to be interested in signing Van Persie, who netted 37 goals in all competitions last season.
Wilshere will miss the start of the season
Jack Wilshere will miss the start of the season - and looks certain to miss the first 2 games of England's World Cup qualifying campaign.
The Arsenal star has been hailed as the man to give England the creative style lacking in the EURO 2012 finals.
But he missed all of last season due to an ankle problem and will now not be fit until the middle of September.
Wilshere has been put on a 12-week rehabilitation course after a double op - one to rectify his long-term ankle problem and Arsenal used the chance to sort out a knee tendon injury.
Now, he looks like missing England's World Cup qualifiers with Moldova on 7 September and the home game against Ukraine 4 days later.

Newcastle face tough opening week
Newcastle will have to play twice in 3 days at the start of the new season after both UEFA and police refused pleas to reschedule games.
Alan Pardew's men face a televised Barclays Premier League trip to Chelsea on Saturday 25 August less than 48 hours after they play the first leg of their Europa League qualifier on Thursday 23 August.
The Magpies asked for the Chelsea game, which is being screened by ESPN at 5:30 PM, to be moved back a day, but were refused permission by the Metropolitan Police, and subsequently failed with a request to UEFA to bring the earlier game forward 24 hours.
Details of the situation were revealed as the first wave of televised fixtures for the new Premier League campaign were confirmed this morning.
Newcastle now face an even tougher start to the season with Tottenham Hotspur due on Tyneside for the opening league fixture on Saturday 18 August ahead of a potentially gruelling week.
Manchester City
Mancini agrees new deal
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has agreed terms on a new 5-year deal with the Barclays Premier League champions.
The Italian, who had been linked with the vacant job as Russia coach, began discussions on a new deal at the end of last season and has committed to a long-term future at Etihad Stadium.
Former Inter Milano manager Mancini took over as City manager from Mark Hughes in December 2009.
In his first full season at the club he ended a 35-year trophy drought by winning the FA Cup and also secured Champions League football with a third place finish in Premier League.
Last season he wrote his name into the club's history books by edging Manchester United in the closing seconds of the season to win a first league title in 44 years.
10 Premier League new signings we're itching to see
With the summer dilated to 6cm and the 2012/2013 Premier League season beginning to crown, we thought we'd have a timely look forward at the new boys we're eager to see in action proper come August.
1. Gylfi Sigurdsson (Tottenham Hotspur)
Siggy played for Spurs, jammin' good with Bale and Gallas and the Spiders from Mars. The Icelandic midfielder has already carried on where he left off at Swansea City, belting in a couple of pre-season pearlers for Spurs and long may it continue - though it remains to be seen just how AVB plans on crow-barring both Sigurdsson and Van der Vaart into his side once the real football farts back into life again.
2. Nuri Sahin (Arsenal)
We're getting a little ahead of ourselves here, but a loan from Real Madrid (apparently Mourinho has told him he can go wherever he likes) is mooted to be in the offing and Sahin would be a stellar addition to the Arsenal midfield. Think Denilson but replete with poise, composure, awareness, stamina and a firm grasp on all of football's basic fundamental skills - so pretty much the opposite of Denilson then.
3. Jan Vertonghen (Tottenham Hotspur)
With the King abdicating his throne this summer due to his sandstone knees, Michael Dawson perpetually out for 4 months at a time every 6 months and the great Bongali Khumalo off to Greece, Spurs needed a bit of defensive bolstering and they don't come much more promising than this silky Belgian bastardo - a player linked with a move to the Lane since time immemorial. A cracking centre-half no doubt, but how will he fair on his maiden outing in one of Europe's rough-and-tumble big leagues? Fairly well, we imagine.
4. Junior Hoilett (QPR)
It's no secret, we don't regard Hoilett particularly highly round these parts. A sporadic, chintzy player who was made to appear mercurial by the moribund halfwits surrounding him last year. It was telling that, despite all the agent-perpetuated hype, none of the big clubs even toyed with the idea of dabbling on him and he ended up at QPR this summer. There's no real science or reason behind it, but we're kind of hoping he bombs at Loftus Road.
5. Oscar (Chelsea)
We'll hold our hands up and admit that we'd never heard of Oscar until Chelsea latched onto his scent a month or so ago, but it sounds like - while not strictly a bargain at £25 million - the Blues have nabbed themselves a clever, fleet-footed little so-and-so with a penchant for approach play cute enough to make you go cross-eyed and weak at the knees.
6. Michu (Swansea City)
Miguel Perez Cuesta, or "Michu" to you and I, scored a fair few goals for Rayo Vallecano in La Liga last season, despite them being a bit a naff - finishing joint-ninth in the overall top scorer's list on 15 goals, making him the highest scoring midfielder in the league. At just £2 million, it looks like Swans coach Michael Laudrup may have found his "Sigurdsson".
7. Eden Hazard (Chelsea)
While we're not overly sold on Hazard's "£35 million player" credentials, we will concede that he's a terrifically exciting prospect - one we'll be keeping a close eye on. With Oscar, Hazard, Mata, Marin and the like all feeding balls into him, surely 2012/2013 will be the year that Fernando Torres gets back up around that 20-goal mark again? No? Anyone?
8. Shinji Kagawa (Manchester United)
Strange as it sounds, it's Bebe who's been teasing fans by providing most of the heroics for United during their pre-season gallivanting, though it's also been remarked that Kagawa already looks right at home at the tip of the United midfield, picking plum passes through crowded penalty areas. No "bedding in" necessary, which is rather excellent news.
9. Fabio Borini (Liverpool)
With Liverpool's "goals for" tally in fairly steep decline since 2008/2009, Brendan Rodgers is putting a lot of faith in young Borini (£13 million's worth of faith to be exact) to be the supplier of the "finish" that seems to elude Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll all too readily. Borini briefly did the business for Rodgers with 6 goals in 9 games at Swansea in the Championship a couple of years ago, but is still fairly green in professional terms and his stint with AS Roma was hardly littered with starts or goals. He'll need to hit the ground running at Anfield.
10. Santi Cazorla (Arsenal)
Again, we're jumping the gun here, but only ever-so-slightly. In fact, it would appear that Cazorla is due to sign on the dotted line at Emirates before the weekend is out. We've long been fans of the diminutive Spaniard, who is properly two-footed, a set-piece dispatcher par excellence and about as fluid a technician with the ball at his feet as you're likely to get for £16 million. With Cazorla, Sahin, Podolski and Giroud all joining, "summer 2012" is shaping up to be Arsene's finest ever transfer window from an "inbound" perspective. If he can keep hold of Robin van Persie and Alex Song into the bargain, well... fuggedaboutit.

Achilles surgery sidelines Parker
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Scott Parker will be unavailable until mid-September after an operation on his right Achilles.
Parker had problems with his Achilles at the end of last season when he missed Tottenham' last 4 matches, although he recovered to feature for England at EURO 2012.
It is thought that he aggravated the injury while playing at the tournament.
The industrious midfielder is the engine room and enforcer in the Tottenham side and this disruption to his pre-season is a blow to Andre Villas-Boas's preparations.
The club said that the surgery went well but Parker will not play for at least 6 weeks.
This news means that the 31-year-old will spend the international break on the sidelines, missing England's friendly against Italy as well as World Cup qualifiers against Moldova on 7 September and Ukraine 4 days later.
Aston Villa suffer Albrighton blow
Aston Villa have suffered a third major injury setback with winger Marc Albrighton facing several weeks out of action with a broken metatarsal.
Albrighton suffered the setback during the first week of pre-season training last month, Press Association Sport understands. Now sources close to Villa are predicting he will be sidelined for at least 6 weeks.
The 22-year-old is still having to wear a protective boot and is not expected to return until late September or early October.
Albrighton's blow follows on from striker Gabriel Agbonlahor and defender Richard Dunne being ruled out for lengthy periods.
Agbonlahor is out for 4 to 5 weeks and Dunne for 6 to 8 weeks with knee and groin problems respectively.
Mancini confirms Richards blow
Roberto Mancini's joy at winning the Community Shield was tempered with the news that Micah Richards will be sidelined for a month with an injury.
Richards suffered the setback when on Olympic duty for Great Britain in the quarter-finals clash with South Korea.
City initially thought Richards would only be out of action for a week but the prognosis for the ankle injury is worse than first feared.
Goalkeeper Joe Hart was also ruled out with a back problem which has also meant he is not available for England's friendly with Italy on Wednesday.
Miyaichi moves to Wigan on loan
Arsenal winger Ryo Miyaichi has joined Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan.
The 19-year-old Japan international enjoyed a successful spell at Bolton towards the end of last season and will get the chance of more first-team action with the Latics.
Miyaichi completed his move to Arsenal in January 2011 after impressing on trial. Both of his 2 senior appearances for the Gunners came in the Carling Cup, while also featuring regularly for the reserves.
Newcastle vs Tottenham Hotspur preview
Newcastle and Tottenham meet in the opening round of the English Premier League season for the first time since the league was formed.
A Tottenham side managed by Osvaldo Ardiles earned a narrow 1-0 victory in the inaugural round of the Premier League in 1993 and they have enjoyed bragging rights in recent times.
After a 2-1 loss at St James Park in 2008, the Spurs have gone on to win 3 out of the past 5, including a 5-0 thumping last season courtesy of 2 goals from Louis Saha, who is no longer at the club.
However, fast forward to 18 August at St James Park and a lot has changed at both clubs.
Newcastle fended off interest from various European clubs to retain the services of Senegalese target man Demba Ba, while Alan Pardew signed Curtis Good (Melbourne Heart), Gael Bigirimana (Coventry City) and Romain Amalfitano (Reims), with Ajax midfielder Vurnon Anita set to join.
And in terms of departures, Leon Best (Blackburn Rovers), Fraser Forster (Celtic), Danny Guthrie (Reading), Peter Lovenkrands (Birmingham City), Alan Smith (MK Dons) and Tamas Kadar (Roda JC) all moved on.
Pardew's men had a solid pre-season with victories over AS Monaco and Sporting Braga, as well as draws against Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahce and Olympiacos, but their final match was a disaster as they lost to Championship side Cardiff City 4-1.
As for Tottenham, they have endured a far more eventful pre-season, with Harry Redknapp stood down in place of former Chelsea coach Andre Villas-Boas.
The Europa League-winning manager signed a 3-year deal at White Hart Lane but will have his work cut out trying to eclipse Redknapp's achievements.
Despite Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen joining in a £10 million deal and Gylfi Sigurdsson turning down Liverpool in turn for a move to London, Villas-Boas' task has been made difficult by Croatian midfielder Luka Modric, who has his heart set on a move to Real Madrid.
But while the transfer is at a crossroads, Villas-Boas is fighting hard to reinforce his attacking stocks.
Saha is no longer at the club, while Spurs attempts to make Emmanuel Adebayor's loan move permanent has yet to materialise, meaning Jermain Defoe is the only recognised striker at the club.
Steven Pienaar (Everton), Niko Kranjcar (Dynamo Kiev) and Vedran Corluka (Lokomotiv Moscow) were all sold during the club's tour of United States, which saw them face the likes of Liverpool, Valencia and LA Galaxy.
And on the injury front, both teams have some concerns.
Hatem Ben Harfa (knee) will not play, while Papiss Cisse, Demba Ba, Fabricio Coloccini, Cheik Tiote and Yohan Cabaye are either suffering from knocks or short of fitness.
Meanwhile, Tottenham midfielder Scott Parker faces up to a month on the sidelines due to an Achilles injury.

Skrtel signs on with Liverpool
Martin Skrtel has committed his future to Liverpool by signing a new long-term deal with the club.
The 28-year-old, who was voted as the Reds' Player of the Year last season, has been recently linked with a move away from Anfield - with Manchester City, Arsenal, AC Milan and former club Zenit Sankt Petersburg among the sides reportedly interested in the defender.
However, the Slovakia international quashed those rumours by putting pen-to-paper on a new contract with the Merseyside outfit, declaring that he wants to make history with "one of the biggest clubs in the world".
Skrtel, who signed for Liverpool from Zenit in 2008, explained that staying with the club makes sense on and off the pitch, indicating that under new manager Brendan Rodgers they are looking to challenge for a top 4 finish after a dismal campaign last term.
"I have been here almost 4 and a half years and I have enjoyed that time here - myself and also my family", said the centre-back.
"So there were no questions about whether to stay or to leave."
"A lot of things have changed, a new manager has come. I think we can start to make history and I want to be a part of that history."
"We have our target. For this season it is the top 4 and I hope we can do it. Then we will see."
