Argentina part ways with Sampaoli
Jorge Sampaoli has stepped down as Argentina head coach following their disappointing World Cup campaign.
Sampaoli took over a year ago charged with putting together a side to first reach the 2018 World Cup in Russia and then mount a challenge for the trophy.
Argentina, thanks largely to the brilliance of Lionel Messi, qualified for the tournament with a win in their last match.
However, they scraped out of their group thanks to a late Marcos Rojo winner in their final match against Nigeria, and were beaten 4-3 by eventual winners France in the last 16.
The AFA thanked 58-year-old Sampaoli and his assistants, who have also left their positions, for their services.
The decision means that Argentina, World champions in 1978 and 1986, are looking for their 4th coach in 4 years.
The split with Sampaoli, who led Chile to the Copa America title in 2015 with victory over Argentina in the Final, was expected even though he had a contract until 2022.
He inherited an ageing squad under a chaotic soccer federation and never looked like putting his stamp on a side that was inconsistent for most of his tenure.
It means Argentina - who have had 3 different coaches since Alejandro Sabella led them to the World Cup Final in 2014 - are back to square one in their search for a first major international title since winning the Copa America in 1993.
Tim Cahill retires from international football
Australian Tim Cahill has announced his retirement from international football aged 38 after he competed in his 4th World Cup.
The former Everton forward became the first Australian to play at 4 consecutive World Cups when he came off the bench in the Socceroos' 2-0 defeat to Peru in the group stages of the competition.
Cahill, who had a second spell with Millwall before being released when his short-term deal ended at the end of last season, retires as Australia's leading goalscorer with 50 goals from 107 appearances.
Cahill made his international debut against South Africa in 2004 and joined a small group by scoring at 3 World Cups.

Răzvan Raț a anunțat astăzi că a pus oficial punct carierei la vârsta de 37 de ani, după o ultimă experiență neinspirată la Poli Timișoara, cu care a retrogradat în liga secundă.
Cariera acestuia rămâne marcată de câteva borne greu de egalat, Raț fiind deținătorul unor recorduri de invidiat.
ARE CELE MAI MULTE MECIURI ÎN EUROPA
Răzvan Raț este singurul fotbalist român care a jucat peste 100 de meciuri în competițiile europene intercluburi. Fundașul stânga are 107 partide jucate, fiind pe primul loc. Pe 2 este Gică Hagi, cu 95 de meciuri, iar ultima treaptă a podiumului este ocupată de Gheorghe Popescu, cel care a jucat de 88 de ori.
De altfel, Raț este unul dintre puținii jucători români care după anul 2000 se pot mândri că au cucerit un trofeu european, Cupa UEFA alături de Șahtior Donețk, în 2009.

Ozil quits playing for Germany
Mesut Ozil says he will "no longer be playing for Germany" after accusing some German FA officials of racism.
Ozil, 29-year-old, was part of the Germany squad at the World Cup in Russia and was fiercely criticised as they crashed out at the group stages.
A photograph he posed for with Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan ahead of the tournament led to his loyalty to Joachim Low's side being questioned.
Germany team manager Oliver Bierhoff suggested Ozil should have been dropped after his failure to clear up the Erdogan meeting.
Ozil, who is of mixed German and Turkish heritage, defended his actions in a lengthy statement issued through his social media accounts on Sunday, the first time he has publicly addressed the matter, saying he and his family had received hate mail, threatening phone calls and social media abuse.
Ozil blamed the German Football Federation (DFB) for failing to defend him against his most strident critics and singled out mistreatment from DFB president Richard Grindel as the most frustrating issue.
Ozil was a member of the Germany side that won the World Cup in 2014 and has been voted Germany's national team Player of the Year on 5 separate occasions.
FIFA will cut the list down to 3 finalists at a later date, ahead of the awards ceremony in London on 24 September.
Brazil coach Tite handed new deal
Tite will remain as Brazil coach until 2022 despite the team's World Cup quarter-finals exit in Russia, the country's football federation [CBF] has announced.
The 57-year-old who has been in charge since August 2016, is the first Brazil coach to extend his deal after a World Cup since the 1978 edition of the tournament.
His side were knocked out by Belgium in the quarter-finals at Russia 2018 in only his second defeat at the helm.
Brazil will next face USA in a friendly in September. The team's next big tournament is the 2019 Copa America, an event the country will host.
Mexico head coach Osorio steps down
Mexico head coach Juan Carlos Osorio has stepped down from his role after 3 years in charge.
The 56-year-old led the country to the last 16 of the World Cup in Russia where they were knocked out after losing 2-0 to Brazil.
The Colombian won 33 of his 52 games in charge of Mexico but has rejected offers from the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) to extend his contract.
Seedorf appointed Cameroon coach
Clarence Seedorf has been appointed as the new manager of Cameroon, a sports minister in the African country has announced.
The appointment, which also sees Patrick Kluivert named as Seedorf's assistant, was revealed by Cameroon's Minister of Sport and Physical Education, Pierre Ismael Bidoung Mkpatt on Saturday.
Sven-Goran Eriksson, who turned down the vacant Iraq job, held talks to take charge of Cameroon but the former England manager was unable to reach an agreement.
Seedorf, who has held brief managerial spells at AC Milan, Shenzhen and Deportivo La Coruna, takes over from Belgian Hugo Broos, who led the side to a surprise victory at the 2017 African Nations Cup finals but was sacked in November after failing to qualify for the World Cup in Russia.
Alexandre Belinga had been acting as caretaker coach since and the new managerial team's first major finals test will be to defend their Nations Cup title next June on home soil.
Piszczek retires from international football
Borussia Dortmund defender Lukasz Piszczek has announced his international retirement after more than a decade representing Poland.
Piszczek made 65 appearances for the national team and started Poland's first 2 matches at the Russia World Cup 2018.
In a statement posted on social media, the 33-year-old wrote: "Sometimes you have to make difficult but rational decisions. After long reflections, I did it".
"My adventure with the national team has come to an end. For 11 years I have always proudly represented Poland in the senior national team. It was a special time. I will always remember it very fondly."
"I would like to thank the fans for their support and coaches: Leo Beenhakker, Franciszek Smuda, Waldemar Fornalik and Adam Nawalka, thank you for your trust."
Poland finished bottom of World Cup Group H despite recording a 1-0 win over Japan in their last game.
Corluka retires from international football
Croatia defender Vedran Corluka has announced his retirement from international football on Friday.
The centre-back has decided to call time on his Croatia career after 12 years wearing the Croatian colours. Corluka, who played 103 times for his country, announced the news on his Instagram profile.
Corluka could not have wished for a better end to a magnificent career for Croatia by winning the silver medal at the World Cup in Russia.
The defender affectionately known as Carli, says he will continue to be Croatia's most fiery fan and says he has no doubt that together they will celebrate like they did this summer.

Pique retires from Spain duty
FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has revealed that he has retired from Spain's national team.
The 31-year-old said on Saturday that he had told new Spain coach Luis Enrique that the World Cup was his last tournament with La Roja.
Pique said "the decision had already been made a long time ago and it was well thought out".
Pique announced before the World Cup in Russia that he did not plan on returning to the national team after the summer.
The central defender made his international debut in a friendly in 2009 and played 102 matches with Spain winning 73 of them. He also scored 5 goals.
Only 12 other players have 100 appearances or more with Spain's national team.
Pique was an indisputable starter when Spain won the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championship.
Silva retires from international football
Manchester City midfielder David Silva has announced his retirement from international football.
The 32-year-old played 125 times for Spain and scored 35 goals after making his debut in 2006.
He won the 2010 World Cup along with the 2008 and 2012 European Championships.
Silva took to social media to say he was "very proud" of his achievements and that the decision to retire was "one the most difficult of my career".
Aragones, who was coach when Spain won the 2008 Euros, died 4 years ago.
Silva's decision comes just 2 days after FC Barcelona centre-back Gerard Pique also announced his retirement from Spain's national side.
Mandzukic calls time on Croatia career
Mario Mandzukic has called time on his international career, saying the runners-up medal he achieved with Croatia at the World Cup this summer has made his decision "easier".
The 32-year-old scored for his country in the Final last month - the first time Croatia had reached the Final of a major tournament - but could not prevent them losing 4-2 to France.
Mandzukic also scored the extra-time winner against England in the semi-finals that set up the match against France, but he says Croatia's second-place finish is enough to leave him satisfied after 11 years in international football.
Mandzukic ends his international career with 33 goals in 89 games for his country.
Subasic retires from Croatia's national team
Danijel Subasic says he is retiring from international soccer, becoming the third Croatian player that reached the World Cup Final to leave the national team.
The 33-year-old Subasic joins defender Vedran Corluka and striker Mario Mandzukic in calling it quits.
Subasic says "the time has come to say farewell to my favorite jersey after 10 years with the national team".
He says he made the decision to retire before the World Cup, adding that playing in the Final was his dream.
Subasic, who plays for AS Monaco, made 44 appearances for his country.
Moses retires from international football
Victor Moses has retired from international football in order to focus on his club career at Chelsea.
The 27-year-old has called time on his Nigeria career after winning 37 caps for the Super Eagles.
Moses scored 12 goals for his country over a 6-year period and was part of the squad that won the 2013 African Cup of Nations in South Africa.
He also played every minute of Nigeria's most recent World Cup campaign in Russia, which ended in a group stage exit.
Vardy & Cahill step down from England duty
Jamie Vardy and Gary Cahill are both set to call time on their international careers after informing England manager Gareth Southgate that they want to focus on club football.
Leicester City striker Vardy and Chelsea defender Cahill have both been regulars in Southgate's squads since he was appointed in November 2016.
While neither have completely "shut the door" and would be willing to play under exceptional circumstances, it is likely that both made their final international appearances at the 2018 World Cup.
Having made his international debut in 2010, Cahill has amassed 61 appearances for his country.
With an emphasis on youth in the England setup, the 32-year-old Cahill is ready to step aside.
Vardy initially shared his thoughts with Southgate at the start of the Premier League season and was given time to mull over his decision, according to Sky Sources.
However, the period of reflection has not altered his view, and it appears his England career will end with 7 goals.
Much like James Milner, Vardy and Cahill have told Southgate they would be prepared to return in exceptional circumstances, such as an injury crisis.
Both decisions had been anticipated by Southgate, who is expected to recall Liverpool's Joe Gomez when he announces his latest squad on Thursday. It remains to be seen who will take Vardy's place up front.
Dempsey announces retirement from football
Former Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur striker Clint Dempsey has announced his retirement from professional football.
Dempsey concludes his career after 15 years, during which he played for the New England Revolution and Seattle Sounders in MLS as well as two spells in the Premier League.
The 35-year-old came to England with Fulham in January 2007 and, including a later loan spell, made 232 appearances for the Craven Cottage club, scoring a total of 60 goals.
Dempsey also had a successful season with Tottenham in 2012-2013, scoring 7 more Premier League goals and 12 in total in his 43 appearances.
He returned to MLS in 2013 with the Sounders and continued his prolific spell of goalscoring, while also continuing a successful international career that included 3 trips to the World Cup finals.
Ronaldo, Modric & Salah nominated for FIFA Best Player award
Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Mohamed Salah have made the final 3 for FIFA's Best Men's Player of the Year award in 2018.
Ronaldo and Modric both helped Real Madrid to Champions League glory prior to the former's move to Juventus, with Salah scoring an incredible 44 goals in all competitions for Liverpool.

Zidane, Deschamps & Dalic nominated for FIFA Best Coach award
Zinedine Zidane, Didier Deschamps and Zlatko Dalic have been named the 3 finalists for FIFA's Best Coach of the Year award.
Former Real Madrid coach Zidane is the current holder of the prize and is nominated once again after he became the first coach to win 3 straight Champions League titles.
Zidane left the Spanish giants a week after his side's win over Liverpool in the Final in May and is yet to find a new club, but his spectacular 2-year spell in charge has made him a perennial contender for the award since its inception in 2016.
The Frenchman saw off competition from Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri to win it last year, with World Cup finalists Deschamps and Dalic standing in his way of winning the crown once again in 2018.
Deschamps guided France to their first World Cup success since 1998, when he was captain, as they beat Croatia 4-2 in the Final.
With a side comprising the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann and N'Golo Kante, Les Bleus beat Argentina, Uruguay and Belgium in the knockout rounds to reach the Final, where Deschamps got the better of another Best Coach nominee.
Although France ultimately triumphed, Dalic's Croatia put together a fantastic campaign to reach their best ever finish at the tournament, despite the coach only taking over in October 2017 to oversee their last qualifying game and then take them through the play-offs.
Croatia won their 3 group stage games before beating Denmark and Russia on penalties to face England in the semi-finals, winning 2-1 in extra time.
The Coach of the Year will be announced at the ceremony on Monday 24 September.
Also announced on Monday were the 10 nominations for the Puskas award for the Best Goal of 2018, which will be decided by a fan vote.
Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Mohamed Salah, Benjamin Pavard, Ricardo Quaresma, Denis Cheryshev, Riley McGree, Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Lazaros Christodoulopoulos will have spectacular efforts put to a public vote.
The finalists for the Best Goalkeeper award are Hugo Lloris, Thibaut Courtois and Kasper Schmeichel.

Pekerman leaves Colombia job
Jose Pekerman has left his role as Colombia manager after 6 years in charge.
The Argentine guided Colombia to the knockout stages at the last 2 World Cups and to third place at the 2016 Copa America.
However, after a last 16 exit to England in Russia this summer, the 69-year-old has decided against renewing his contract.
Colombia Football Federation president Ramon Jesurun confirmed the news on Tuesday, just a week after having expressed hope that Pekerman would lead the side to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Colombia reached the quarter-finals at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil before being eliminated by the hosts.
Pekerman also led Argentina to the last 8 of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
