Rooney aiming for the top

United ruled the roost both domestically and in Europe last term and Rooney is convinced The Red Devils are nowhere near their peak.

"After our success last year, there will be high expectations but we've got a good enough squad and hopefully we can emulate last season,” the England star told The Sun.

"Of course, winning trophies brings you confidence and we're a confident team anyway. But it's given us that bit extra and belief that we're the best in the world.

"Hopefully we can prove that again this season."

Rooney had a testy time in the draw with Kaizer Chiefs last week, getting involved in a scuffle with Onismor Bhasera, but he is relishing the physical contests.

He added: "It's nice to get tackled again - the sort of things you're used to getting during the season.

"We've enjoyed it. It's good to get back, see the lads and get amongst it again. I can't wait."

Tevez joins Manchester United on a permanent basis

It was revealed today that Manchester United have agreed to pay ₤32 million for their Argentinean forward Carlos Tevez,.

Tevez left West Ham at the beginning of the 2007/2008 season on a two-year loan but Manchester United have opted to buy him a year earlier than was originally agreed.

He is currently owned by MSI, a sports investment company who can expect a huge payment if the deal goes through.

Black Cats Bid £10m For Saha

Despite his problems however, Saha has continued to display his goal-scoring prowess by bagging 42 goals in 124 appearances for the Red Devils.

With Carlos Tevez securing a permanent deal at Old Trafford, and with Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo virtually indispensable to Alex Ferguson, the French international Saha is seen as surplus to requirements at the club. The Telegraph states that Ferguson wishes to recoup the entire £12million he paid for the player four years ago.

Ex-team-mate Roy Keane is ready to offer the 29-year-old an escape route from United, and has reportedly offered a considerable sum for the services of Saha. The striker has reportedly promised to make a decision on his future in the next 72 hours. It is believed that Ferguson would accept the£10million sum in order to reach a quick resolution to the deal.

Keane is seeking striking cover with Kenwyne Jones convalescing from a serious knee injury and is expected to complete the signing of El-Hadji Diouf from Bolton for £2.5million in the coming days.

Saha, also courted by PSG this week, would undoubtedly be impressed by the ambition shown at the Stadium of Light, with a string high-profile players signing on this summer.

Internationals Teemu Tainio and Pascal Chimbonda have been added from Spurs as Keane seeks to improve on last season’s 15th place finish.

Henry To Sign For Manchester United?

Sir Alex Ferguson has been trying hard to sign a decent striker and Tottenham’s Dimitar Berbatov was his number one target.

Gunners fans will be left reeling if Henry moves to United given the fact that the Frenchman remains an Arsenal hero following his seven year stint at both Highbury and the Emirates.

Should Ferguson fail in his attempt to sign Henry then Ajax striker Klass Jan Huntelaar will be the other possible option.

It’s highly unlikely that the Barcelona forward will sign for United as he is still very much a big part of the Blaugrana’s side. Henry also declared in the past that he would never play for any other English side apart from the Gunners.

Cantona To Cristiano: Don't Be Stupid

Manchester United icon Eric Cantona has once again chimed in on the die-hard rumours linking Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid.

Cantona said: "He is still young, and so maybe he wants to take on fresh challenges. I can understand if this is the reason why he wants to leave for Real.

"But if he were to leave because of something else, he would be doing something absolutely bloody stupid."

The Frenchman, who spent five glorious years at the club inspiring United to four Premier League titles and two FA Cups before retiring from football in 1997, also took the opportunity to confirm reports that he would love to make an emotional return to Old Trafford as a manager.

"It would be a huge honour for me to become Manchester United's coach - it would be marvellous," he told The Mirror

Sir Alex Ferguson has dropped a bombshell by sensationally revealing that he will quit as manager of Manchester United if Cristiano Ronaldo leaves to join Real Madrid.

Ferguson, who has won more trophies than any other manager in the history of English football, has threatened to quit Manchester United if Ronaldo is sold.

Ronaldo: I'm Joining Madrid Next Week

Cristiano Ronaldo has sensationally told Spanish newspaper 'AS' that he will be joining Real Madrid, and will next week travel to Manchester to notify Sir Alex Ferguson that he is leaving the English and European Champions.

"Everything is fine. Next week I will return to England and tell them [Manchester United] that my only desire is to play for Real Madrid and that I will not negotiate," Ronaldo told AS.

According to reports in Spain, the winger will hold a meeting next Tuesday with Ferguson and the club's owners to tell them that he has had enough.

It's not what United fans want to hear but it seems as if the Ronaldo saga is finally coming to an end and no doubt Calderon will be dancing to the tune of Ronaldo's words.

Papers: PSG want Reds duo

Silvestre keen to stay, despite PSG interest
Mikael Silvestre, the Manchester United defender, is wanted by Paris Saint-Germain but he is still holding out for a testimonial.
The France international, 30, made just three Barclays Premier League appearances last term but will clock up 10 years at Old Trafford this season. PSG plan to offer £3.5m.
They also fancy United's injury-prone France striker Louis Saha but he would prefer to stay in England.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has insisted once more that it’s Cristiano Ronaldo’s “dream” to play at the Bernabeu. Rooney questioned by police

Wayne Rooney has been questioned by police in London over allegations he spat at a photographer.

“We can confirm that police have received a third party allegation that a photographer was spat at by an individual in Hanway Street, W1, on Tuesday evening,” a spokesman from the Metropolitan Police confirmed.

“A 22-year-old man was interviewed under caution. He was not arrested and did not attend a police station. The inquiries continue.”

A spokesman for Rooney said: “Wayne was interviewed by police in connection with an alleged minor offence. Wayne was happy to co-operate fully.”

Rooney: I'm "Blameless"

Wayne Rooney has refused to take the blame following an ugly incident involving the paparazzi earlier this week...

According to The Independent, Rooney's spokesperson said yesterday: "The photographer had to be evicted. Wayne was happy to co-operate fully and to give a clear version of the events in which he believes he was blameless."

Many have pointed to the altercation as yet another demonstration of the 22-year-old's troublesome temper, which has caused him grief on and off the pitch in his short yet glamorous professional career thus far.

The ex-Everton man was infamously expelled from England's quarterfinal clash against Portugal in the 2006 World Cup after stomping on an opponent's groin, and has drawn heavy criticism for his constant tirades at referees.

Fergie warns against complacency

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson warned his players that there will be no room for complacency in his squad this season.

United won both the Premier League and Champions League last season but Ferguson now wants his squad to focus of the new campaign.

And he warned that he will not be afraid to move players on if they are not showing the hunger he expects.

"If success has gone to anyone's head and they show signs they are ready to rest on their laurels, they will soon be on their way", he said.

"Soon I will look into the eyes of my players to make sure they ave retained the hunger they need to succeed. Then we will look forward."

"If I don't see the appetite and ambition, then the bus moves on without anyone who has lost the spark."

Wayne Rooney is set to miss the start of the season after picking up a virus in Nigeria.

Manchester United toured Africa last month and won the Vodacom Challenge before taking on Portsmouth in a friendly.

"I'm starting to worry about whether we are going to have a team ready for the start of the season, because Nani is suspended, Anderson is at the Olympics and I doubt if we will get Rooney fit after the virus he has had," Ferguson told Sky Sports News.

"He picked it up in Nigeria and it's not a nice one. It's 12 days to the season starts and he's not been able to train."

VDS Confident Of Double Defence

Edwin van der Sar has declared that Manchester United can successfully defend their Double this season, even if Cristiano Ronaldo leaves...

"I don't see why not," the 37-year-old said in The Sun.

"The core of the team is still the same. Of course, we had a little thing with (Cristiano) Ronaldo this summer but we have a good squad of players.

"During the season we are bound to suffer setbacks, every team does.

"There will be injuries, loss of form, red cards and clearly we need luck at crucial times as well. But hopefully we will end up in the right place."
