Bayern Munchen vs Manchester United preview
FORM GUIDE
Bayern qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League after finishing second in their group and squeezed through the last 16 with an away goals victory over Fiorentina. They went down 2-1 to VfB Stuttgart at home at the weekend, having taken the lead through Ivica Olic. That followed a 1-0 cup semi-final win at Schalke and a 2-1 league reverse at Eintracht Frankfurt, before which Bayern had gone 19 games unbeaten. They now trail Schalke at the top of the Bundesliga by 2 points. United go into the game with tails up: Saturday's 4-0 triumph at Bolton was the latest in a 7-game winning streak in which the Reds have scored 19 times. 4 of those goals came in the home leg trouncing of AC Milan, which secured United's first 2-legged victory over the Italian side. Now the Reds are out to repeat the feat against Bayern.
INS & OUTS
Sir Alex Ferguson is confident Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand will be fit to play, but United are without long-term absentees Wes Brown (metatarsal), Anderson (knee) and John O'Shea (thigh). Arjen Robben is a big doubt for Bayern after picking up a calf injury at the weekend, while there are also question marks over fellow winger Franck Ribery. Striker Mario Gomez has a chance of featuring after recovering from his calf problem, but Bastian Schweinsteiger sits out a one-match suspension. Martin Demichelis made his comeback as a substitute against VfB Stuttgart, following a 3-week lay-off.
STAR MAN
If fit, both Dutchman Robben and Frenchman Ribery will provide width, pace and a real attacking threat for Bayern. Robben has 10 goals to his name this term, while Ribery has been in and out of the team with a knee problem but continues to menace opposition defences. Sir Alex has made plans to combat the two players known collectively as "Robbery" and who he believes are "special in Bayern's set-up".
MANAGER
Louis van Gaal ended a 4-year spell at AZ Alkmaar, whom he had guided to the title in his native Holland, to join Bayern at the beginning of the season. After a difficult start in which Bayern won only one of his first 4 games in charge, Van Gaal has fashioned a well-organised, expansive team who are still challenging for the Treble. The 58-year-old's pedigree in the game is renowned: he led Ajax to 1995 Champions League glory and has twice coached Spanish giants FC Barcelona, as well as the Dutch national team.
"We'll raise our game"
Ryan Giggs is adamant that United can finish the job at Old Trafford next week, despite Tuesday night's disappointing defeat at the hands of Bayern Munchen.
The veteran Welsh winger said: "I am confident that we can raise our game at home. We have done it many times before and we'll have to do it again".
Giggs featured as a second-half substitute in Munchen, coming on for Nani in the 82nd minute. By that time United had already notched up a second-minute away goal through Wayne Rooney, but Giggs feels that striking early isn't always beneficial.
"Usually you would take an early goal, but it can work against you", he said. "We would usually try and catch the opposition on the counter attack but we didn't keep the ball anywhere near as well as we are capable of."
"We didn't play well and gave the ball away far too cheaply, but you have to give credit to Bayern who made it very difficult for us."
Giggs was also asked about the injury to Wayne Rooney.
"I was behind the incident so didn't see it", said Ryan. "I didn't see him afterwards as he went straight off for treatment."
"Obviously you want your full squad fit at this time of the season as every game is massive in the run in, so we are all hoping that Wayne is fit very soon."

Rooney out 2 to 4 weeks
Wayne Rooney will miss 2 to 4 weeks with a sprained ankle sustained during United's 2-1 Champions League defeat against Bayern Munchen, according to a report.
Sky Sports News claims the England striker will be available for the World Cup, despite leaving Allianz Arena on crutches after turning awkwardly on his right ankle in the build-up to the home side's late winner.
However, it is a preliminary diagnosis as Rooney has not yet undergone a scan. United stayed the night in Munchen after the game and arrived back in the North-West on Wednesday afternoon. He will have a scan on Thursday.
If confirmed, the news will come as a massive relief to England coach Fabio Capello, with Rooney's presence in the squad seen as pivotal to the nation's World Cup chances.
However, it is a crushing blow to United's hopes of silverware, with the forward set to sit out a key phase of the season. Rooney will miss Saturday's top-of-the-table Premier League clash against Chelsea and the return leg against Bayern.
He will also be a major doubt for the league games against Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.
After Tuesday night's game in Germany, Sir Alex Ferguson said: "It's too early to say. I don't think it's terribly serious, but we'll wait and see".
The injury occurred in the centre of the pitch after slight contact with Bayern striker Mario Gomez. Rooney went over on his ankle and leapt up in pain before collapsing to the turf in obvious discomfort.
Capello already has several injury headaches, with David Beckham ruled out of the World Cup with a ruptured Achilles tendon, while left-back Ashley Cole, striker Jermain Defoe and winger Aaron Lennon both face a race against time to recover from ankle, hamstring and groin issues respectively.

New deal for Fabio
Brazilian full-back Fabio da Silva has signed an extension to his contract with Manchester United, keeping him at the club until at least June 2014.
The 20 year-old, who has made 13 appearances for the first team is seen as a highly promising prospect by manager, Sir Alex Ferguson.
He said: "Fabio has settled into the club really well. He's a natural footballer; a player who has good pace, reads the game well for a boy of his age and is always looking to attack. He's had some bad luck with injuries, but he'll make a fine Manchester United player in the years to come."
Fabio da Silva said: "Playing for Manchester United is every young player's dream. I'm very happy and proud to commit my future to the club. In the time I've been here, I've learned a lot from the world class players that I train with and I hope that as time goes on, I can contribute more and more to the success of this great club."

Roar us to victory
Darren Fletcher is calling for a choral onslaught from United fans as the Reds bid to overcome title rivals Chelsea in a titanic clash at Old Trafford.
The champions lead Carlo Ancelotti's side by two points in the Barclays Premier League table. While Fletcher concedes that the Blues could strike a telling blow as they bid for a first title in four seasons, he feels home advantage gives United a platform to avenge this season's controversial defeat at Stamford Bridge.
"The fans at Old Trafford are always great in the big games, so they’ll hopefully help us over the line," Fletch told FourFourTwo magazine. "It does give you a slight advantage but this is top Chelsea side we’re talking about.
"They’re capable of coming to Old Trafford and winning. It’s always nice to be at home, though, and having lost at Stamford Bridge it would be nice to turn that around."
While Fletcher recognises the threat of third-placed Arsenal, lurking four points off top spot, he feels Saturday's meeting pits together the two finest teams in England.
"Chelsea have led the league for most of the season, and there’s a reason they’ve done that: they’re a very strong team," he said. "A lot of the Chelsea players have experience of winning the league – albeit a few years ago – and I know they’re determined to get back to that level. It’s going to be a tough end to the season."

TEAM NEWS
Man United
Wayne Rooney will not get the chance to fire his side into a lead at the top of the table after suffering minor ankle ligament damage against Bayern on Tuesday; the striker faces around 2 to 3 weeks out.
Rooney is United's only new injury concern, though Michael Owen, Wes Brown, Anderson and John O'Shea remain unavailable, with O'Shea set to return to full fitness imminently after recovering from a long-term thigh problem.
Another long-term absentee, midfielder Owen Hargreaves, is also set to return soon; indeed, Sir Alex Ferguson has even suggested that either Hargreaves or O'Shea could make the bench for the Chelsea clash.
Chelsea
There is better news on the striker front for Chelsea, as Didier Drogba has recovered from the knock that saw him miss the 7-1 thrashing of Aston Villa and is almost certain to start at Old Trafford after sitting out two training sessions.
Ancelotti has his regular list of long-term absentees hampering his team selection: Michael Essien, Ashley Cole, Ricardo Carvalho and Jose Bosingwa are all still unavailable, while Branislav Ivanovic is sidelined with a knee problem.
PREDICTION: Manchester United 2-1 Chelsea
Nani ready for battle
Despite the disappointing display and result in Munchen, Nani insists confidence is high within the United camp ahead of Saturday's title tussle with Chelsea.
The Reds are a point ahead of their championship rivals and know victory at Old Trafford would be a huge step forward in their quest for a record 4th consecutive crown.
"It's very important that we stay ahead of our rivals and don't give them any encouragement", Nani told United Review.
"It will be a big result for us if we can win on Saturday and it will give us a great chance to win the league."
Hot on the heels of United's biggest game of the league campaign is the must-win clash with Bayern and Nani says everyone is fully prepared for the challenges ahead.
"It feels normal to have big game after big game at this stage of the season and I think you must enjoy the pressure", he declared.
"You're up against big teams in the Champions League and every game in the league is important, but we all feel ready for the challenge and are determined to win everything we can."
"Blues have title edge now"
Sir Alex Ferguson says United will bounce back from losing at home to Chelsea for the first time in 5 years, but admits it may not be enough to keep the title.
"It's a disappointing result", said Sir Alex. "I thought we looked leggy in the first half. We took too long to get going. Chelsea were by far the better team."
"But in the second half we did well and we were unfortunate not to get something from the game. We dominated that second period and there's always that chance we can rescue it. But we just didn't get there today."
Unfortunate may be putting it mildly - some might say grossly unlucky, considering Didier Drogba was in an offside position when he made it 2-0 to the Blues.
"What I can't understand is the linesman was directly in line with it", said Sir Alex.
"There's nobody in front of him and he gets it wrong. In a game of that magnitude you really need quality officials. We didn't get them today and it was a poor, poor performance."
The appointment of referee Mike Dean for this game had been criticised in midweek by another aggrieved manager, Burnley's Brian Laws, but Sir Alex wouldn't be drawn on that.
"I don't know about that. I'm not going into that. When I saw it was Mike Dean, I did worry, I must admit. Plenty of people are criticising him but I'm not going to go down that road."
Vidic to see out United contract
Serbia international defender Nemanja Vidic insists he will see out the remainder of his Manchester United contract which expires in 2012.
The 28-year-old former Spartak Moscow stopper had been linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid earlier in the season.
However, Vidic has denied ever stating he wanted to join Real and claims he is very much enjoying his time at Old Trafford.
Vidic signed an extension in November 2007, keeping him at United for 2 more years and he has no plans to leave before that deal expires.
"I have never said I'd like to move to Real", he told Daily Star Sunday.
"I will definitely stay here until 2012 at least - and then we have time to speak about whatever may happen in the future."
"I am enjoying it here and I think I've showed that on the pitch. For now, all I'm focused on is playing the game and doing my best."
Vidic admits speculation over one's future can cause players to become unsettled and he does not want his form disrupted at such a crucial stage of the season.
"Media speculation can affect your concentration and I don't want that now", he continued.
"Maybe earlier in the season, because I had a few injuries, people started talking and saying: 'He's not happy'. But none of it came from me."
"I'd like to win 4 league titles in a row because nobody's done it before in the Premier League and I want to make history."
Da Silva, Carrick & Nani will start against Bayern
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will makes some big line-up alterations when the Red Devils host Bayern Munich on Wednesday for their Champions League quarter-final second leg.
Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, all of whom started in United's 2-1 loss to Chelsea that swung the title race in favour of the Blues, are set to be replaced for Wednesday's second leg, according to The Mirror.
United are trailing 2-1 after being defeated in the first leg at Allianz Arena last week, and Rafael Da Silva, Michael Carrick and Nani will replace the veterans in the Red Devils most important game of the season.
Out of the 7 times that United have lost in the Premier League this season, 5 of those times the game came after competing in the Champions League.
Ferguson admitted that the action in Europe left his players a little tired for the cruch clash against Chelsea.
"The players just looked a bit leggy."
"Coming back from a game in midweek and having a lunchtime kick-off is not easy."

"UCL exit won't hurt title hopes"
Darron Gibson insists Manchester United must not let the disappointment of their Champions League exit affect their Premier League title fight.
United were knocked out by Bayern Munchen in the quarter-finals last night and a recurrence of Wayne Rooney's ankle problem is likely to keep him out of the trip to Blackburn on Sunday.
Gibson, the Republic of Ireland midfielder whose goal had appeared to put United on course for the semis, said: "We cannot lie down and let the whole season go. It is either that or we stand up and fight and go for the championship".
"I cannot describe the disappointment but we have to pick ourselves up for Blackburn Rovers on Sunday. We are still in the race for the title."
"We have the experience in the dressing room to stand up and fight back. There are lads in there who have been in this position before and done it before."
"We have the characters and experienced players to pick ourselves up and I think we will be all right."
Gibson said Rafael's sending off early in the second half had swung the tie away from United and their 3-0 lead slipped to 3-2 - and victory on away goals for the German side.
He added: "Any team would think they were going through when you are 3-0 up on the night. The whole stadium and probably the whole world must have thought we were going through".
"It was through silly mistakes that we allowed them to score. Rafael's sending off was obviously a massive turning point."
"They had an extra man and we had to sit back and defend. We were put under a lot of pressure."
"We've played a lot of games so the lads were getting tired."
"Rafael getting sent off killed it for us. It is mixed feelings for me. I would rather not have scored and gone through. We are devastated."
