Mascherano wants to quit Reds



Javier Mascherano wants to leave Liverpool, the club's manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed.

Hodgson has been speaking to the Reds' key figures since taking over from Rafael Benitez at Anfield and while captain Steven Gerrard has indicated he wants to stay, Argentina skipper Mascherano is keen to move on, with reports linking him with a reunion with Benitez at Inter.

"Yes, he wants to leave the club", confirmed Hodgson.

"He has made that perfectly clear. I think he wanted to leave a year go."

"He wants to leave now but he is contracted to Liverpool so whether he leaves or not will be our decision."

Hughes succeeds Hodgson as Fulham manager

Mark Hughes, out of a job since being sacked as Manchester City's boss last December, was named as Premier League club Fulham's new manager on Thursday.

The former Wales and Manchester United striker, 46-year-old, succeeded Roy Hodgson, who moved to Liverpool earlier this month.

"I am happy to have joined Fulham following much speculation regarding the appointment of a new manager", Hughes told the Fulham website (fulhamfc.com).

Fulham owner Mohamed Al Fayed moved for Hughes after missing out on Dutchman Martin Jol whose club Ajax refused to let him leave.

Hughes, who had a glittering playing career which included a spell at Fulham's west London neighbours Chelsea, began his managerial career with Wales in 1999 and managed Blackburn Rovers before taking over at City in 2008.

Fulham enjoyed one of their best seasons in 2009-2010. They finished 12th in the Premier League and reached the Europa League final which they lost to Atletico Madrid.

Hughes has a tough act to follow at Fulham where Hodgson made the most of the club's resources and took them to their first ever European final.

"I'm joining on the back of two of the most successful seasons in the club's history and that in itself brings with it the challenges of expectation and ambition", said Hughes.

"I'm confident that with some additions to the squad, hard work and commitment we can move this club forward in the right direction", he added.

Wenger on the hunt for a defender

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits he is looking to sign a new centre-back this summer, and has "plenty of names" on his radar.

Sol Campbell, William Gallas and Mikael Silvestre have all left the club since May, while Laurent Koscielny from Lorient is Wenger's only addition to his central defence.

Johan Djourou has made his comeback after being sidelined for almost all of last season with injury, but with Thomas Vermaelen that leaves Wenger just 3 established centre-backs to choose from.

The Gunners boss admits he required 5 central defenders last season and is looking to bring at least one more to Emirates this summer.

"Squad rules will damage football"

Arsene Wenger believes the new restrictions on Premier League squads will prove a "disastrous decision for football and for the players".

From this season, all Premier League sides have to name a first-team squad of no more than 25, of which 8 must be so-called 'home-grown' players.

These new regulations will, however, not severely impact the Gunners, who despite having a large number of non-British players have the likes of captain Cesc Fabregas, Denilson, Gael Clichy, Nicklas Bendtner and Alex Song all coming under the "home-grown" category along with Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Kieran Gibbs.

Players must have spent 3 years between the ages of 16-21 registered at a club in England and Wales to qualify.

Arsenal manager Wenger, though, is not in favour of any such limitations.

"I am not a big fan of it because it puts, first of all, many players without clubs", he said.

"Secondly it puts the clubs in a weak position most of the time in the transfer market because when you already have 25 players and you buy another one, you know you have 26 and now have to get rid of one."

"So when you buy a player, you have to integrate into the transfer how much it will also cost to get rid of a player because you are not sure if you will be capable after of selling the player."

"This is a disastrous decision for football and for the players. I was quite amazed that the union accepted that."

"For the clubs as well it is a very bad decision."

Wenger rejected the suggestion the new rules would prevent the "stockpiling" of players by certain teams.

"The big clubs will always have 25 top players and you will not stop that by this kind of decision", the Arsenal manager said.

"When the big clubs have already employed a player and he has to go to a smaller club, there are only 2 solutions: the smaller club has to pay above their own potential or the big club pays an amount of a salary. In either case it's not satisfactory."

O'Neill resigns as Aston Villa manager with immediate effect

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has dropped a pre-season bombshell and resigned from the club with immediate effect.

Speaking to their official website, he said: "I have enjoyed my time at Aston Villa immensely. It's obviously a wrench to be leaving such a magnificent club".

"I would like to pay tribute to the Villa players, my coaching staff and the Villa supporters for all the support and encouragement they have given both the club and me personally during my time as manager."

"I wish them all the best for the future. I will obviously be assisting the club in the immediate short-term with regard to the handover of my duties."

Paul Faulkner, chief executive of Aston Villa, said: "The club would like to thank Martin for the great work he has done at Aston Villa over the past 4 years".

"He has helped to establish the club in the upper echelons of the Premier League, has taken us to Wembley and we have also qualified for European competition for the past 3 seasons under his management. We wish him the best in the future."

New season, old headaches for Wenger

Arsenal will start the new Premier League season with the same old injury problems as Arsene Wenger faces up to a selection headache.

Wenger will leave it as late as possible to decide whether World Cup final duo Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie are fit enough to feature against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

However, the Gunners are already without centre-half Johan Djourou (hamstring) and striker Nicklas Bendtner (groin). Midfielder Alex Song (calf) is doubtful while Denilson (abdominal) and Abou Diaby (calf) face fitness tests.

With Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey still recovering from a broken leg, Wenger could be left with little option but to throw 18-year-olds Jack Wilshere and Emmanuel Frimpong into the centre of midfield, although it would seem more likely Samir Nasri would move across as he did for spells last season.

At the back, Arsenal are also short and so untested summer recruit Laurent Koscielny looks set to partner Thomas Vermaelen in what would be a dream, but hardly ideal debut for the young Frenchman.

The best league in the world. Really.

It is impossible to hear those words without imagining them spewing from the face of a Richard Keys, a Jim White or some other satellite TV mouthpiece.

Such is the ludicrous hyperbole with which SKY have infused English football that the sentence quickly transformed from an opinion to a statement of indisputable fact, then to just an alternative name for the Premier League.

SKY's endless, unquenchable excitement about the tiniest soundbite, injury scare or nil-nil snooze betrays an uncertainty in their own product.

It is the kind of undiscriminating enthusiasm normally reserved for people desperate to convince you of the merits of a minority pursuit like speedway. LOOK! THEY'VE GOT NO BRAKES!!

The lack of humour and perspective seems to stem from a fear that people will wake up one morning, the scales will fall from their eyes, and they will realise the Premier League is actually rubbish.

The thing is, SKY do not need to shout about their star asset. It is hugely popular and massively successful.

In fact, it really is (let's keep this lower case) the best league in the world.

There is a reason why all those replica shirts sell in the Far East and it is not Wayne Rooney's suave good looks. The Premier League is entertaining, usually competitive and played to a generally high standard.

But Early Doors doesn't need to sell the Premier League to you. You'll be watching this weekend anyway. You know why? Because it's good.

Let's see how some of the world's other top leagues stack up.

Primera Division
Spain is an obvious contender because that's where the Premier League's best players always end up. But when we talk about Primera, what we really mean is Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. The gap between those two and the rest is staggering. The 25-point margin between second and third last season led Early Doors to christen it SPL South, and that third-placed team, Valencia, have lost their two best players. Real won 31 out of 38 games last season, scored 102 goals and finished with 96 points, more than any Premier League team in history. They were three points behind Barca and coach Manuel Pellegrini got the sack. All of which is a way of saying that Primera's total lack of competitive balance makes it deeply unappealing for all but a few weekends a season. And every time a David Villa, Cesc Fabregas or Jose Mourinho goes to one of the big two that situation only worsens.

Serie A
Internazionale Milano's Champions League triumph issued a timely rebuttal to the popular wisdom that Italian football is in terminal decline. ED is actually a big fan. But it remains a comically unstable place - in the year from June 2009 there were 26 managerial changes in a 20-team league, with only 4 teams retaining the same boss. And last season's storyline of Jose Mourinho getting the better of Claudio Ranieri all seemed a bit 2004 for anyone who follows the English game. Crowds are low and frequently rowdy, chairmen are certifiable, the national team is an even bigger joke than England's and the place is still feeling the fallout from the 2006 Calciopoli scandal.

Bundesliga
German football has become uber-fashionable because of the low ticket prices, standing areas, big crowds, strict ownership rules and the way the clubs help to nurture young talent. All very well, but those massive gates still have to watch German football which, at club level, really isn't all that. While FC Hollywood hog the limelight with their big name players, the rest soldier on knowing the minute they come up with a good young player, he'll be off. Look at the way Real Madrid plucked Sami Khedira from VfB Stuttgart and the depressing inevitability of Mesut Ozil's departure from Werder Bremen (not Stuttgart as ED initially put, of course). Also, this is a league in which Claudio Pizarro and Michael Ballack are considered gods. There's plenty to like about German football - just not the football itself.
