Spanish legend Aduriz retires at 39
Legendary Athletic Bilbao Aritz Aduriz has just announced his retirement, with mounting injury problems preventing him even from completing this season when it restarts.
The forward posted the following on his Twitter account to confirm the bad news.
The statement explains that his hip problems are becoming so serious that even playing these last matches of the season when La Liga resumes is impossible now.
It's a sad end to a quite brilliant career for the authentic living legend of Basque football. It all promised to end so well with a Copa del Rey Final against their old rivals Real Sociedad, but that dream is now over.
The numbers from his career are incredible - 780 games and 285 goals, with more than 400 league games for Athletic alone. 177 of his goals came after the age of 30, as he signed off his career with his best spell yet back in Bilbao.
He signed off in the best way possible - his final goal for the club was a bicycle kick against FC Barcelona in a 1-0 win.
Not only did he give Athletic their first win against the Catalans since 2013, he also joined Lionel Messi as the 2 players to have scored in 15 consecutive La Liga seasons.
Casemiro agrees new contract at Madrid
Casemiro has already signed a new contract with Real Madrid through to the summer of 2023, according to Marca.
The Madrid-based daily dedicated the front page of its Wednesday edition to the news that a deal has already been agreed upon, for the next 3 years.
The report claims that the club view the Brazilian as indispensable and the agreement was concluded months ago.
Casemiro's current deal was set to expire in 2021 and a recent report in Diario Sport outlined how he is set for a huge salary boost in a new deal lasting until 2023.
The Brazil international has played 3,120 minutes across 35 matches (of a possible 39) for Los Blancos this campaign - more than any other player at the club.
The player started in 21 successive matches between September and December, with the summer exit of Marcos Llorente to Atletico Madrid meaning there was no natural back-up in the squad with Casemiro increasingly key for Zinedine Zidane's side.
Bilbao hand Garitano one year extension
Gaizka Garitano has been given another year in charge of Athletic Bilbao after a successful first spell.
The club announced today, in a strange looking socially distant announcement, that the manager would have his deal extended for a year following his successes this season.
The former Eibar coach has managed 27 wins and 18 draws from 61 league games in charge of Los Leones.
Previously the coach of the academy team, Garitano stepped up to the first team when Eduardo Berizzo was sacked in late 2018.
The club was in a bad state, and looked at risk of relegation from La Liga for the first time. Since then, Garitano has righted the ship, and even got the team to a much-awaited all Basque cup Final this season - now sadly delayed until 2021.
If all goes to plan however, Garitano will still be around to coach that game, and perhaps for much longer.
Oblak smashes La Liga record
Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak became the fastest goalkeeper to reach a century of La Liga clean sheets after the team's 5-0 demolition of Osasuna.
Osasuna were put to the sword on Wednesday as Atletico star Oblak made history by keeping his 100th clean sheet from just 182 league appearances.
Slovenia international Oblak shattered the record set by Miguel Reina, who managed the same feat after 222 matches.
Oblak has established himself as one of the world's best 'keepers since joining Atletico from Benfica in 2014.
The 27-year-old has tasted Europa League, UEFA SuperCup and Supercopa de Espana success with Atletico, while he was a Champions League runner-up in 2015-2016.
The Slovenian has kept more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper in Atletico history and is also the first foreigner to bring up 100 La Liga clean sheets.
Oblak has won the Zamora Trophy, given to the La Liga 'keeper with the lowest goals-to-games ratio each campaign, for the past 4 seasons.

Karim Benzema has surpassed Ferenc Puskas in Real Madrid's all-time scoring charts after scoring twice in a 3-0 victory over Valencia.

Garcia signs Celta Vigo extension
Celta Vigo coach Oscar Garcia has committed his future to the club by signing a 2-year extension to his contract.
The 46-year-old took the helm at the struggling Galician side in November earlier this campaign after the dismissal of Fran Escriba, but his previous deal had been due to expire on 30 June.
As confirmed by Marca, Garcia has penned a 2-year deal at the club - whom he appears to have guided to safety this season.
Celta are 7 points clear of the relegation zone in La Liga with just 7 rounds of matches remaining and appear to have hit form at just the right time.

Earlier this month, Diario AS cited a report from Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha that Benfica president Luis Felipe Vieria has opened talks for the defender to return to the Lisbon giants.

Valencia have endured a miserable few weeks and the bad news keeps coming as striker Rodrigo Moreno will miss the remainder of the season.
As reported by Marca, the Spain international suffered a ligament tear in the 2-goal loss against Athletic Bilbao earlier in the week.
Moreno has scored 7 goals this season - including 4 in La Liga - and his loss is a fresh below to the club, who have slipped to 10th in the standings and have won just 2 of their last 15 matches in all competitions.

Manuel Pellegrini is set to be appointed as the new coach of Real Betis on a 2-year contract, report Radio Marca.

Pellegrini - who has been out of work since leaving West Ham in December - is now the favourite to be appointed at Betis, following the dismissal of Joan Francesc Ferrer last week.

Varane & Hazard ruled out of Bilbao trip
Real Madrid will be without key pair Eden Hazard and Raphael Varane for their La Liga clash away at Athletic Bilbao.
French international Varane was withdrawn at half-time in Los Blancos midweek win over Getafe, after suffering a minor neck injury.

Betting shirt sponsors to be banned in La Liga from next season
After months of speculations and first regulations, it now has been revealed that betting companies will be almost certainly no longer be able to appear on football shirts of La Liga clubs from next season.
As revealed by EL Pais, the Spanish Minister of Consumer Affairs Alberto Garzon toughening up regulations on sponsorship from and exposure of betting companies.
Valencia, Deportivo Alaves, Leganes, Granada, Real Mallorca, FC Sevilla, Osasuna and Levante are the 8 clubs in La Liga whose main shirt sponsorship is a betting company.
The new decree ban any betting companies appearing on shirt sponsorship, to sponsor stadium names or any other aspect of the clubs.
Another aspect of the decree is that advertising of bookmakers on television, radio, YouTube and video exchange platforms exclusively to the time slot from 1 to 5 in the morning.
The state of alarm in Spain has prevented the Royal Decree from entering into law throughout this summer. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs are confident that when the bill passes through Brussels - as it is expected to - it will be in place for the start of the 2020-2021 La Liga season.
Cadiz secure La Liga promotion
Segunda Division side Cadiz have sealed a dramatic return to the top flight, for the first time since 2005.
Alvaro Cervera's side have looked nailed on to secure promotion following the restart of the 2019-2020 season in June.
However, despite losing 1-0 at home to Fuenlabrada this weekend, results elsewhere have secured their move back into the top tier.
Cadiz were last promoted to the Primera Division back in 2005, before being immediately relegated at the end of the 2005-2006 season.
Cervera's side are favourites to go on and win the Segunda title, with a 5-point lead over second place Huesca, with 2 games to go.
Huesca are in pole position to secure the second automatic promotion place, with the Aragonese side 2 points clear of the play-off places.

Villarreal confirmed Cazorla exit & retirement of captain Soriano
Villarreal have confirmed playmaker Santi Cazorla will leave the club this month while captain Bruno Soriano will retire.
As cited by Cadena Cope, both of the veteran midfielders will represent the Yellow Submarine for the last time in Sunday's La Liga clash against Eibar with captain Soriano to hang up his boots following the encounter.
A recent report in Spanish radio station Cadena Ser spoke of the interest from Qatari club Al Sadd for Cazorla, who are coached by former FC Barcelona captain Xavi Hernandez and who is reportedly the driving force behind a potential move.

Leganes confirm Aguirre exit
Leganes have confirmed the exit of manager Javier Aguirre following the club's relegation from La Liga.
Aguirre was appointed at Estadio Butarque in November with the club rooted to the foot of the division and heavy favourites to be relegated.
However, they took their fight to beat the drop down to the final day when they held Spanish champions Real Madrid to a 2-2 draw.

Valencia confirm Gracia as new coach
Former Watford manager Javi Gracia has been confirmed as the new first team coach of Valencia following the sacking of Albert Celades last month.
A report in Marca over the weekend claimed that Gracia and Los Che had reached a personal agreement last week before club owner Peter Lim gave his approval to the deal.
Gracia has penned a 2-year contract at the club through to the summer of 2022, and will be the 7th permanent manager since Lim took control.
Long-serving Valencia custodian Salvador Gonzalez had been interim coach at Mestalla for the final weeks of the 2019-2020 campaign but he failed to turn around their struggling fortunes, with the club missing out on qualification for Europe.

Moreno could miss 2020-2021 campaign
Villarreal defender Alberto Moreno could miss the entire 2020-2021 La Liga season after suffering a serious knee injury in preseason action.
The former Liverpool full-back was taken off during Villarreal's friendly clash with Tenerife, and reports from Marca claim he will now undergo surgery on anterior cruciate ligament damage.
The Spanish international will have an initial assessment on the injury next week, with a final decision made on what type of surgery he needs expected in the coming days.
Moreno is certain to miss the start of the upcoming campaign, and an operation would rule him out for a minimum of 6 months, with a rehabilitation period lasting until the end of the season.
