Betting scandal costs Atalanta
Atalanta will start the Serie A season with a 6 point penalty deduction for their role in a betting scandal.
Last week the federal prosecutor Stefano Palazzi advised the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) over the punishment which should be handed out based on the alleged involvement of those implicated in the scandal.
And the FIGC has now returned their verdicts, with Atalanta deducted 6 points and captain Cristiano Doni banned from football for 3-and-a-half years.
Doni's team-mate Thomas Manfredini has also been banned for 3 years.
The sanctions all relate to a criminal case brought forward by prosecutors at the tribunal of Cremona who uncovered an illegal betting ring involving a number of footballers and officials back in June known as "Last Bet".
Former Italy international Giuseppe Signori has been banned for 5 years and once this ends he will be excluded from holding any football-related role for life.
It is a shocking start to the season for the club, who were only promoted to the top flight this term after winning the second-tier Serie B last campaign.

Maicon set for knee surgery
Inter Milano wing-back Maicon is to return to his native Brazil to undergo surgery on a knee injury, the Serie A club have announced.
The 30-year-old underwent tests on Tuesday, where damage to the cartilage in his right knee was diagnosed.
Maicon is set to be operated on by Professor Jose Luis Runco, the Brazil team's doctor.
Meanwhile, Samuel Eto'o only completed the morning training session on Tuesday as his move to Russian side Anzhi moves closer.
Inter begin their Serie A campaign at home to Lecce on 28 August.

Cavani determined for Serie A success
Edinson Cavani has declared his ambition to help the club win the Serie A crown after Sunday's 3-1 victory against AC Milan.
The San Paolo outfit are currently topping the Serie A table after securing 3-1 wins against Cesena and AC Milan in the first two weekends of top flight action.
The club's Champions League debut in midweek was also indicative of their form, as they came through a tough test away to Manchester City with a 1-1 draw.
Cavani, who scored a hat-trick against Milan, confessed he hopes his side will challenge for the league title, but admitted it is an uphill task.
"I think this match against AC Milan will give us more confidence for the rest of the season. It's a very important victory, these are signs we can compete with any team", the Uruguayan said.
"We know it will be a tough season, there are a lot of strong teams to beat and we need to continue working as we have been doing."
"Playing every 3 or 4 days due to Champions League, it's obviously difficult and tiring and we're talking about top level matches, therefore we should remain focused and pay attention at all times, because any mistake could cost us dearly."
"We will give all we have to the end, at any match and any competition; at the end of the season we will see where Napoli finish."
Napoli's next Serie A match sees them travel to Verona on Wednesday to face 11th place Chievo, who have just one point from their opening 2 fixtures.

Inter sack Gasperini
Inter Milano have fired coach Gian Piero Gasperini following their disastrous start to the 2011/2012 campaign.
The Serie A giants have confirmed the 53-year-old's departure on their official website.
"Inter want to communicate that the first-team training at Appiano Gentile this morning was taken over by Daniele Bernazzani and Giuseppe Baresi", a statement on inter.it reads.
Gasperini replaced Leonardo as the man in charge at Giuseppe Meazza earlier this summer, but the former Genoa tactician failed to stamp his authority on the Coppa Italia holders and has consequently been relieved of his duties.
Gasperini began his spell at Inter with a 2-1 Italian SuperCup loss against AC Milan. He then followed the derby defeat up with a 4-3 reverse at Palermo and a scoreless draw with AS Roma in Serie A.
A 1-0 home defeat to Trabzonspor in Champions League last week only added to his misery and club president Massimo Moratti moved to dismiss Gasperini after Tuesday's shock 3-1 loss against Novara in the latest Serie A fixture.

Pato to miss 4 weeks
AC Milan had more bad news on the injury front when Brazilian striker Alexandre Pato was ruled out for a month with a leg injury.
The 22-year-old, who scored after 24 seconds of Milan's recent draw with FC Barcelona in Champions League, suffered the injury against Udinese on Wednesday.
"Tests undertaken have revealed a muscle contraction in the player's right thigh. The player is expected to be out for at least 4 weeks", a club statement said on Thursday.
Serie A champions, who face Cesena on Saturday and Viktoria Plzen in Champions League on Wednesday, are facing an injury crisis with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robinho, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Massimo Ambrosini, Gennaro Gattuso, Philippe Mexes and Luca Antonini all sidelined.
Ranieri named new Inter boss
Internazionale Milano have confirmed the appointment of Claudio Ranieri as coach on a deal until June 2013.
Former Valencia, Chelsea, Juventus and AS Roma coach Ranieri succeeds Gian Piero Gasperini, who was sacked on Wednesday after a short, unsuccessful spell in charge. Ranieri's first game will be on Saturday at Bologna.
Inter sacked Gasperini after Tuesday's shocking 3-1 defeat at newly-promoted Novara - the team's 4th loss in 5 games this season. Ranieri, 59-year-old, becomes Inter's fifth coach in the past 15 months.
Ranieri had been out of a job since leaving AS Roma earlier this year.
News of Ranieri's appointment had been widely expected after he gave an interview vowing to "wake up the team".
Ranieri told Domenica Sportiva: "Inter are a great team. They have a bad start to the season and I will have to talk to the team to understand why that was. I will have to bring enthusiasm and a change of gear in order to wake up the team".
"I cannot promise that we will win this or that but I believe this team has a lot to give and we must prove it."

"Fiorentina match a life or death game"
Walter Mazzarri has labeled this Saturday's clash with Fiorentina a must-win game after losing midweek.
The Southern Italians went down 1-0 to Chievo on Wednesday, with a single goal from Davide Moscardelli enough to condemn Mazzarri's charges to their first loss of the Serie A season.
Napoli are still in the upper reaches of the table with 6 points from 3 games so far but the coach recognises that another win is imperative if the club want to continue their dream of lifting the Scudetto in 2011/2012.
"I knew that after the first defeat, the next one would be a life or death game", the coach told reporters in Friday's press conference.
He also defended the changes he made against Chievo, stating that they were vital to avoid injury.
"I had prepared the team working with our fitness coach, who told me which players were at risk", he said.
"For me Fideleff did well, he was the best on the pitch. If it was not for Chievo's unfortunate revival, I am sure that we could have gone on to win."
"Against Cesena we gave them far more opportunities and ended up winning."

AC Milan vs Cesena preview
The injury list at Milan keeps on growing by the day as Alexandre Pato has been ruled out for a month after picking up a thigh injury against Udinese on Wednesday.
Defenders Luca Antonini, Philippe Mexes and Daniele Bonera are not fit to feature against Cesena while midfielders Mathieu Flamini, Gennaro Gattuso, Massimo Ambrosini and Kevin-Prince Boateng will also miss out. Attackers Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho are sidelined but Inzaghi may see some action off the bench on Saturday.
Abbiati - Abate, Nesta, Thiago Silva, Zambrotta - Nocerino, Van Bommel, Seedorf (C) - Aquilani - El Shaarawy, Cassano
Cesena coach Marco Giampaolo almost has a full squad at his disposal but will be unable to call on Francesco Antonioli and Vincenzo Rennella who are out due to injury.
Ravaglia - Ceccarelli, Von Bergen, Rossi, Lauro - Parolo, Colucci (C), Guana - Eder, Mutu, Candreva
Bologna vs Inter Milano preview
Bologna coach Pierpaolo Bisoli will be without a plethora of players for Saturday's clash with Inter. Starting goalkeeper Jean-Francois Gillet picked up an injury in the midweek draw with Juventus and will be replaced by Federico Agliardi. Andrea Raggi, Simone Loria, Nicolo Cherubin, Saphir Taider, Alessandro Diamanti and Gaston Gimenez will also miss the match due to various ailments.
Agliardi - Casarini, Portanova, Antonsson, Morleo - Pulzetti, Perez, Mudingayi, Kone - Ramirez - Di Vaio (C)
Claudio Ranieri will make his coaching debut for Inter and will play 4 at the back. Ivan Cordoba, Emiliano Viviano and Maicon are out with knee injuries while Thiago Motta is still nursing a sore hamstring. Andrea Poli and Dejan Stankovic have been ruled out of the encounter as well. Wesley Sneijder picked up a muscle problem and will not feature.
Julio Cesar - Nagatomo, Lucio, Samuel, Chivu - Zanetti (C), Cambiasso, Obi - Forlan - Milito, Pazzini
Catania vs Juventus preview
Vincenzo Montella is set to make several changes to the Catania squad that fell apart midweek against Genoa, in what was a 3-0 reverse at Marassi.
The alterations begin in defence, as right-back Alessandro Potenza looks likely to be dropped in favour of Pablo Alvarez. Furthermore, Adrian Ricchiuti should be preferred to Pablo Ledesma and in attack, Gonzalo Bergessio is set to be replaced by Davide Lanzafame, a youth product of the visiting team. However, there is still no sign of injury-hit pair Nicola Legrottaglie or Cristian Llama returning to the fold.
Andujar - Alvarez, Bellusci, Spolli, Capuano - Sciacca, Lodi, Ricchiuti - Gomez, Maxi Lopez, Lanzafame
Meanwhile for Juventus, Antonio Conte will also act in similar vein to his Sicilian counterpart Montella and make a few changes to his set-up too, after a disappointing share of the spoils against Bologna, where Mirko Vucinic was both hero and villain for his goal and sending off.
Fans of the Old Lady will be pleased to see Eljero Elia regain full fitness during the past week, and as a result, he looks ready to be thrusted into his team's midfield, replacing Simone Pepe on the left. In addition, a new strikeforce is being prepared, with Alessandro Matri and Fabio Quagliarella set to form the visitor's attack, as Vucinic is suspended and Alessandro Del Piero is being heavily tipped to begin on the bench.
Buffon (C) - Lichtsteiner, Barzagli, Chiellini, De Ceglie - Krasic, Marchisio, Pirlo, Elia - Matri, Quagliarella
