Claudio Ranieri is concerned that injured midfielder Wesley Sneijder may face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Dutch international missed Inter's Serie A victory against Bologna on Saturday due to a thigh injury and has been ruled out of Tuesday's Champions League encounter at CSKA Moscow.
Ranieri, who was installed as Inter coach last week, said the extent of the playmaker's injury has not yet been determined.
"Sneijder has not travelled to Moscow and this is a blow for us", Ranieri said.
"My fear is that we will lose him for some time because his injury seems more serious than we first expected. We will wait to see what the doctors say."
Inter kicked-off their Champions League campaign with a 1-0 home loss at the hands of Trabzonspor a fortnight ago.

Zarate happy with Inter role
Mauro Zarate said he was delighted to come off the bench to score a late winner against CSKA Moscow in Champions League.
The 24-year-old was brought on by new Inter coach Claudio Ranieri just after half-time and with scores locked at 2-2 the Argentine netted the winner with just 12 minutes remaining.
On a night when headlines were made by Carlos Tevez's refusal to come off the bench for his Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini, Zarate - on loan at Inter from Lazio - said he was happy to be used however his coach sees fit.
"I simply tried to do what I always do - give everything on the pitch", Zarate said.
"The coach knows I will always be ready whenever he calls on me. He must know he can count on me."
"Our job as players is to help Inter win games and I'm happy I gave a good contribution tonight."
The win saw Inter climb to second in Group B, after their shock 1-0 loss to Turkish side Trabzonspor at Meazza in their first match, and they now trail the Turks by just one point.

Juventus vs AC Milan preview
TEAM NEWS
Juventus, joint top of Serie A alongside Udinese after 4 matches, have striker Mirko Vucinic back from suspension and defender Andrea Barzagli and long-term absentee Fabio Quagliarella fit for the first big match at their atmospheric Juventus ArenA. Left-back Paolo Ceglie has returned to training and will undergo a late fitness test before kick-off.
Champions AC Milan travel to Turin with midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng and Philippe Mexes back in training as their injury crisis slowly eases. Striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who scored in the midweek Champions League win against Viktoria Plzen, should made his first league start of the season against his old club. The Rossoneri, 12th with 5 points from 4 games, still have Robinho, Pato, Gattuso and Ambrosini sidelined.
MATCH FACTS
These two sides have met 152 times in Serie A: Juventus lead by 52 wins to 47, with 53 draws.
AC Milan have won 3 of their last 4 meetings with the Old Lady without conceding, but the Bianconeri had the better in the last one at San Siro.
AC Milan are the Serie A side with the most wins at Juventus' ground in the league (21 in 76 games); the Rossoneri are also the team to have scored the most goals against Juventus (95).
Juventus have won just 2 of their last 7 home games with AC Milan.
The Bianconeri are unbeaten in this campaign and have suffered just one defeat in their last 14 Serie A games (vs Parma 0-1 in May).
Beating Cesena last Saturday, AC Milan ended a negative run of 4 games without a win in the league - their worst run since September 2007.
Clarence Seedorf has already scored 8 goals (of his total 57 in Serie A) against Juventus, more than against any other team.

Eto'o linked with Inter return
Samuel Eto'o could make a sensational return to Inter Milano just months after being sold, according to reports.
The 30-year-old moved to the Russian Premier League club during the Serie A off-season and said he would always support Inter.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, his support could turn into much more, as whispers of a loan deal in January spread in Italy.
Eto'o was spotted in Milano - a city with which he maintains close ties - during the international break.
For the moment, the press have suggested it is just an idea rumoured to have come from the 30-year-old.
The Russian championship ends on 6 November and does not start again until 3 March 2012.
Eto'o would be eligible to join Inter on loan terms from 2 January, when the transfer window in Italy reopens for business. He scored 37 goals for the Italian club in all competitions last season.
However, such a move would have to be granted by Anzhi, who own him after paying the Italian club a reported €28 million in August.
Inter have a non-EU place available for Eto'o to return and he will not take part in the African Cup of Nations in January after Cameroon failed to qualify, leaving him free to return if an agreement was reached.
Robinho raring for Milan return
Fit-again Robinho is eager to return for a return to action for AC Milan after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The Brazil international has not featured for the Serie A club since suffering a muscle strain in the build-up to the Champions League game against FC Barcelona in September.
But the 27-year-old forward, having regained full fitness, is hopeful of making a return for Saturday's home match with Palermo.
Robinho, who joined AC Milan from Manchester City after the 2009-2010 season, played a key role in the club's title-winning campaign last season, with 14 goals in 34 matches.

Gargano ruled out for a month
Walter Gargano will miss the next month of Serie A action with a thigh injury.
Gargano sustained the knock in Sunday's league encounter with Cagliari and was forced to leave the pitch after 72 minutes of play.
He underwent further examination on Monday and Napoli have announced that a scan has confirmed he will be out of action for up to 4 weeks.
Gargano, however, is more optimistic.
Via his Twitter account, he has also optimistically hinted that his absence could be only 2 weeks.
"Sprain at least 15 days stop before I return better than before. Thanks to those of you who are asking how I am."
The 27-year-old will not only miss several Serie A games due to the injury, but will also be unavailable for next week's Champions League Group A match at Alianz ArenA.
It's a significant blow for Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri as his side are second in Group A with 5 points from 3 games and trail leaders Bayern Munchen by 2 points.

Matri fit but Juve have doubt over Buffon
Striker Alessandro Matri is likely to feature for Juventus against Inter Milano in Serie A on Saturday, but goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon may not.
In-form Matri, who scored the winner in a 2-1 triumph over Fiorentina on Tuesday to keep his side top of the table, is eagerly anticipating the trip to Meazza.
After Inter - 16th on the Serie A table - lost their goalkeeper Julio Cesar to an adductor injury in the 1-1 draw against Atalanta on Wednesday, Juventus could be without their number 1 in Buffon.
La Repubblica claims the Italy international is still struggling to recover from a shoulder injury which forced him to miss Juventus' previous 2 matches.
Buffon had physiotherapy on Thursday, but his presence in Milano is in doubt.

Inter look to re-sign Viviano
Inter Milano reportedly want to reacquire the remaining 50% of the economic rights to goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano from Genoa.
The Meazza outfit sold half of the 25-year-old's rights to Genoa in the off-season, while purchasing 50% of the rights to Genoa midfielder Juraj Kucka.
Viviano has not yet featured for Inter this term, but the Coppa Italia champions are keen to re-sign him according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
Inter are struggling with problems in their goalkeeping stocks, with Julio Cesar afflicted by injuries in recent months, while the contract of the club's second choice 'keeper, Luca Castellazzi, expires in the summer.
Italian sources suggest Inter will have to spend €4 million to complete Viviano's signing.
Hamsik to ink new deal
Marek Hamsik is set to rubber-stamp a contract extension with Napoli, club president Aurelio De Laurentiis has revealed.
The Slovakian international has been a mainstay in the San Paolo side's midfield since joining the club from Brescia in 2007.
De Laurentiis tried to fire up Hamsik for Sunday's Serie A clash with Juventus, but the midfielder will have to wait for his next chance to impress for Walter Mazzarri's side, with the match postponed because of flooding in Naples.
"If Hamsik wakes up and proves his worth, because he has been a bit off in the last few weeks, it would be a splendid introduction to the appointment we have on Monday regarding a contract extension", De Laurentiis told Corriere dello Sport.
