Kvaratskhelia named Serie A MVP and Spalletti Coach of the Season
Kvicha Kvaratskhelia has been named Serie A MVP of the 2022-2023 season and his Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti is the best coach.
The Lega Serie A calculated the MVP awards based on Stats Perform calculations and picked Ivan Provedel of Lazio as best goalkeeper, Kim Min-Jae of Napoli as the best defender, the best midfielder Nicolo Barella of Inter and Victor Osimhen of Napoli as the best striker.
Kvaratskhelia stands out as Serie A MVP of the season thanks to 12 goals and 13 assists in 33 games.
He inherits the title from Rafael Leao, who took it for AC Milan last season.
Inevitably, Coach of the Season also goes to Napoli and Spalletti, who took them to their first Serie A title since the days of Diego Armando Maradona in 1990.
Napoli were top of the table from start to finish and won the Scudetto with 5 rounds to spare.
Osimhen shatters records as Capocannoniere
Victor Osimhen makes history as the first African to be crowned Capocannoniere and the Napoli striker is the first to combine that with the Scudetto since 2009.
The Partenopei have their final game of the season by hosting Sampdoria at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
They won the title with 5 rounds to spare and now Osimhen can also enjoy his Capocannoniere status, as Lautaro Martinez fired blanks for Inter yesterday and cannot go beyond his 21 goals.
Osimhen is too far out in front on 25 to realistically be caught.
This sets an intriguing precedent, as the last player to combine both the Scudetto and the Capocannoniere title was Zlatan Ibrahimovic for Inter in 2008-2009.
That season, Ibrahimovic too had 25 goals, just like Osimhen.
The Nigerian is the 4th Capocannoniere for Napoli in the post-war period after Diego Maradona in 1987-1988 (when AC Milan won the title), Edinson Cavani in 2012-2013 and Gonzalo Higuain in 2015-2016, both with Juventus taking the Scudetto.
Osimhen becomes the first ever African to be crowned top scorer in Serie A and has already beaten George Weah's record of 47 goals in the Italian top flight.
Only Samuel Eto'o had come close to the Capocannoniere with 21 goals for Inter in 2010-2011, but was beaten to the title by Udinese's Antonio Di Natale on 28.
