However, he has improved massively over the last 12 months, and continues to get better by the day.

8. Martin Caceres (Villarreal to Barcelona)

The 20-year-old Uruguayan is regarded as one of the best young defenders in La Liga, and Barcelona wasted little time snapping him up from Villarreal. A touch overpriced at around 16 million euros, but a great signing for the future nonetheless, particularly with Carles Puyol beginning to show his age.

7. Tomas Ujfalusi (Fiorentina to Atletico Madrid)

At long last, Atleti have made a good defensive signing. They were in denial last summer when they failed to take concrete steps, but have landed just the man to lead their defence upon their return to the Champions League after over a decade. That he comes for free makes it even better.

6. Alberto Gilardino (Milan to Fiorentina)

On the face of it, it looks like the Viola have signed an unhappy, out of form striker. However, that was just what Adrian Mutu's move from Juventus looked like not so long ago. The fans will help him forget Milan in a hurry, and rediscover the striker that wowed Calcio when at Parma. The partnership with Mutu can be backed to produce some special moments in the Champions League.

5. Seydou Keita (Sevilla to Barcelona)

The best signing Barcelona have made this season, particularly in light of the way their soft underbelly was exposed on the road last season. With him partnering Yaya Toure in the middle, it will ensure that the likes of Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi do not get bullied, and also get the full license to thrill. 15 million euros worth their value.

4. Ezequiel Garay (Racing Santander to Real Madrid)

What a capture! Barcelona seemed to have him in the bag, but hesitated a little too much as they waited for Frank Rijkaard to leave and a new coach to take charge. Madrid managed to snatch Sergio Ramos a few years ago, and what a signing that has turned out to be. This one may be no different. Will spend another season with Racing.

3. Amauri (Palermo to Juventus)

The Brazilian-Italian striker makes it to number three after earning himself a long overdue move to a top four club. He has already shown his potential with Palermo, and the prospect of him getting some top quality service from the Juve midfield is simply mouth-watering. Champions League, here he comes.

2. Luka Modric (Dinamo Zagreb to Tottenham)

The hottest young Croatian was snapped up by Spurs despite the interest of clubs such as Barcelona and Chelsea, and what a signing it has already turned out to be. Looks set to become the jewel in Juande Ramos' midfield next season. He makes it to number two on our list.

The underrated Frenchman was one of Arsenal's best players last season, and Milan's signing of him is most definitely the biggest coup of the summer thus far. That it was a free transfer makes it even better.

Arda fancies Italy

Turkish winger Arda Turan looks set to snub reported interest from Premier League side Newcastle in favour of a switch to Italy, his agent has said.

The 21-year-old Galatasaray star was believed to be on The Magpies' radar before Euro 2008 got underway but his performances in Austria and Switzerland have seen his stock rise considerably.

That form has led to heightened interest from a number of clubs and Turan now looks set for a switch to Serie A, with a definitive answer on his future due next week.

Elmander makes Bolton move



Bolton have completed the capture of Sweden international Johan Elmander from Toulouse.

Elmander has signed a three-year contract and seals a deal Gary Megson has been looking to finalise for 6 months.

While no fee has been announced, it is estimated to be around the £10million mark, eclipsing the club record free Bolton paid Fenerbahce for Nicolas Anelka.

Megson is delighted to sign Elmander, who he expects to supply the goals to ensure Bolton are not dragged into a survival fight like last term.

Elmander, former league and cup winner in Denmark with Brondby, is remembered for netting a hat-trick in the decisive win over Bordeaux 12 months ago that earned Toulouse their place in the Champions League.

Daniel Braatan has gone the other way as part of the deal.

Barcelona: Ronaldinho, Eto'o and Deco already sold?

Barcelona has already agreements with three top-level clubs to transfer Ronaldinho, Eto'o and Deco and bring home fresh money to finance a purchase campaign.

According to Sport.es, the easiest easier is that of Deco, ever closer to his mentor Luiz Felipe Scolari at Chelsea.

Ferdinand hopeful on Ronaldo

Rio Ferdinand has called on Cristiano Ronaldo to remain at Manchester United and help the club achieve ‘great things’.

Ferdinand claims he is in the dark over the future of his team-mate and Real Madrid target Ronaldo, but admits he is monitoring the situation like a fan.

The England defender feels United can build on their Double success of last term and is keen for Ronaldo to progress his career at Old Trafford.

”It’s simple for me and the rest of the lads – we hope Ronnie stays,” Ferdinand told The Daily Mirror. “As well as being a United player, I’m a fan and my heart is with the club. So in that sense it’s obvious what I’m going to say.

”We all want him to stay – players and fans alike.

”But it’s up to Ronnie, the manager and the board. They decide what happens, we can’t get involved.”

United claimed Premier League and Champions League glory last term and are rightly classed as the top club in Europe. Ferdinand feels that if Sir Alex Ferguson retains his key players, The Red Devils can continue their domination.

”The most important thing is for this team and for this squad to stick together,” he added. “If we can do that and add to what we’ve got, then we’ve got a great chance of sustained success.

”In football these days you never know what’s around the corner. But if we can keep our best players and the core of the side, we can go on to great things.”

Quaresma nearing Inter move

Reports in Portugal claim that FC Porto star Ricardo Quaresma is nearing a transfer to Serie A giants Inter Milano in order to follow fellow countryman Jose Mourinho.

The spectacular winger is believed to be in talks with the Italian directors regarding a summer move, as the Nerazzurri could offer £24 million for the 24-year-old.

Quaresma, who scored a goal during Euro 2008, has already played in a top European league with FC Barcelona in the 2003-2004 season, but his lack of experience showed through.

Inter could send young striker Pele or David Suazo to Porto as part of the deal, as manager Jesualdo Ferreira has asked for a replacement in case his attacker leaves Dragao.

Manchester City nu se uită la bani. Echipa lui Thaksin Shinawatra îl va transfera pe atacantul brazilian Jo, de la CSKA Moscova, pentru suma record de 19 milioande de lire sterline (24 de milioane de euro), cel mai mare transfer de până acum, din această vară, din Premier League.Atacantul de 21 de ani a primit vineri seară permisul de muncă în Anglia, iar transferul se va finaliza în zilele următoare, anunţă presa engleză.

Jo, al cărui nume întreg este Joao Alves de Assis Silva, este prima achiziţie a managerului Mark Hughes, care a ajuns la City acum două săptămâni, de la Blackburn.

Născut în Sao Paolo, Jo a debutat la prima echipă a lui Corinthians în 2003, pentru care a marcat 13 goluri în 81 de partide, înainte de a fi transferat de CSKA, în 2006.

Jo a avut o evoluţie mult mai bună la CSKA Moscova, 44 de goluri în 77 de partide. Jo, cu o singură selecţie în naţionala Braziliei, şi-a dorit însă un transfer într-un campionat mai puternic decât cel rus, pentru a reuşi să prindă în mod constant selecţionata lui Dunga.

Kia Joorabchian, omul de afaceri care i-a adus în Anglia pe Carlos Tevez şi Javier Mascherano, a fost cel care i-a recomandat brazilianului să aleagă Premir League.

Frank Lampard quits Chelsea for Inter Milano



Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has signed a four-year contract with Italian champions Inter Milan, according to the highly-regarded France Football magazine.

The move will see the England international team up once again with former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who replaced Roberto Mancini as Inter coach earlier this month.

France Football said Lampard, who joined Chelsea from West Ham for £11 million in 2001 when Claudio Ranieri was manager, will earn an annual salary of around £5.8 million.

Lampard was one of Mourinho's 'untouchables' at Stamford Bridge and his goals from midfield contributed largely to the club's back-to-back Premier League title successes in the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seasons.

He has scored more than 20 goals in his past 3 seasons at Chelsea.

Lampard demonstrated great courage when he stepped up to take a penalty in last season's Champions League semi-final against Liverpool shortly after the death of his mother. He scored from the spot and Chelsea went on to reach the final for the first time in their history.

Lampard scored the equaliser for Chelsea in the final which ended 1-1 after extra time, but Manchester United went on to win the match on penalties.

Although Lampard was a hugely influential player at Chelsea, he sometimes failed to shine when partnered in midfield with German international Michael Ballack as both players like to get into the penalty box and score goals.

Specualtion will inevitably increase as to who will replace Lampard, with Portuguese midfielder Deco being touted as one of Luiz Felipe Scolari's main transfer targets.

Deco currently plays for Barcelona but is said to be surplus to requirements at the Camp Nou.

Atacantul olandez Klass Jan Huntelaar a trezit interesul granzilor din Premier League, după ce a refuzat să semneze prelungirea contractului cu Ajax Amsterdam. Huntelaar a refuzat să semneze un nou contract, care i-ar fi adus o creştere salarială substanţială, dar care i-ar fi impus şi o clauză de reziliere a contractului în valoare de 25 de milioane de euro.

Conform presei engleze, atacantul olandez este în vizorul lui Manchester United, Arsenal şi Liverpool.

Ajax nu vrea însă să se despartă prea uşor de golgeterul ei.

"Acceptăm discuţiile cu alte cluburi care sunt interesate de Huntelaar. Ţinând cont de politica salarială de la Ajax, Klaas ar fi putut obţine o înţelegere avantajoasă. Din păcate, el nu vrea să semneze clauza de 25 demilioane de euro, iar mai puţin nu vrem să acceptăm. Nu vrem să plece. Vrem să ne păstrăm golgeterul la Amsterdam. Dacă nu ne înţelegem asupra sumei de transfer cu echipele interesate de el, sperăm să reîncepem discuţiile cu jucătorul. Oricum, chiar dacă nu vrea să semneze prelungirea, jucătorul mai are de onorat 2 ani de contract", a declarat Danny Blind, directorul tehnic al lui Ajax.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar are 24 de ani şi a reuşit deja 70 de goluri în tricoul lui Ajax, în doar 82 de partide.

Adrian Mutu has agreed to join Roma according to Il Tempo. The Romanian international was set to sign a new contract but it seems as if he has changed his mind over the Viola.

Mutu has demanded the club give him what he is asking for in terms of his salary.

The player wants a dramatic increase on his current deal and he did threat that he would leave if Fiorentina didn’t succumb to his demands.

The Viola have been on tenter hooks waiting for Mutu to decide on his future and now, according to Il Tempo, they have an answer, but it’s not the one they were hoping for.

Alessandro Moggi (Mutu’s Agent) has met with Roma transfer chief Daniele Prade and they have already struck a deal which will see the striker swap the Artemio Franchi for the Stadio Olimpico.

Moggi is now trying to convince Fiorentina to part compant with the player but it may prove difficult as Andrea Della Valle, who owns the club, will not let the player leave for less than €25m.

Roma are currently searching for a striker and they have benn linked with Klass Jan Huntelaar of Ajax and Julio Baptista from Real Madrid.

If they fail to land either striker then Mutu will have a great chance of joining the Giallorossi as his future with Fiorentina hangs in the balance.

The striker wants a better deal by hook or by crook but La Viola will not push the boat out in order to keep him happy.

Madrid-based sports daily As claims that Roman Abramovich's Chelsea have tabled a bid of €35m for unsettled Real Madrid winger Robinho...

According to As, new Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari met with club owner Roman Abramovich and Frank Arnesen, sporting director, with a view to planning the shape of the squad for next season. Near the top of the agenda was Robinho.

Apparently Scolari is particularly eager to land his former protégé, who was on the fringes of the Brazilian national team during the coach's tenure as Seleçao boss.

Abramovich, eager to accommodate his new recruit, has thus apparently earmarked €35m that will either be used to bid for Robinho, or has already been utilised for that purpose.

Apparently Scolari sees Robinho as a missing piece of the puzzle as the Blues look to go one better than their losing finalists status in the Champions League. While Scolari's attempts to prevent Frank Lampard from leaving may be fruitless, Robinho would nonetheless be an asset.

Madrid's Point Of View

Still, all is not clear-cut. Madrid, led by sporting director Pedja Mijatovic for the purpose of these negotiations, are apparently holding out for €45m as they seek to raise money for their ongoing crusade to land Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United.

That said, the blancos are said to be not exactly unwilling to let Robinho go. The player has recently displayedh is anger over fruitless contractual negotiations at the Bernabéu, and despite his world-class form earlier in the season he dropped out of the side towards the end of the Liga campaign.

At present Robinho is back in his hometown of Santos with his wife and son for a holiday. He remains in touch with the European footballing world via his agent, Wagner Ribeiro.

The two apparently see continuing in Madrid as 'Plan A', but if an economically sound offer comes in from elsewhere then he will not refuse. All should be clear before he is due to return to first-team training on July 14...

Atacantul italian Christian Vieri, care evolua în sezonul trecut la Fiorentina, a semnat un contract pe un an cu Atalanta, a anunţat, luni, clubul din Bergamo.

Pentru Vieri, în vârstă de 34 de ani, este vorba de a treia trecere pe la clubul lombard, după sezoanele 1995-1996 (19 meciuri, 7 goluri) şi 2006-2007 (7 meciuri, 2 goluri).

Sezonul trecut el a evoluat în 26 de meciuri cu Fiorentina şi a marcat şase goluri.

Venirea lui Vieri la Atalanta nu este apreciată de suporteri, care au scris pe zidurile din oraş: "Vieri, nu eşti decât un ingrat, nu eşti demn de Atalanta".

Suporterii îi reproşează atacantului că a plecat de la Atalanta la Fiorentina, după ce clubul din Bergamo i-a permis să revină pe teren în urma unei grave accidentări la genunchiul stâng, în perioada martie 2006 - aprilie 2007.

Dario Knezevic la Juventus

Oficialii lui Juventus au anunţat că fundaşul croat Dario Knezevic, ultima dată la Livorno, a semnat un contract cu echipa care evoluează pe Delle Alpi. Clubul Juventus nu a precizat valoarea transferului şi nici durata angajamentului internaţionalului în vârstă de 26 de ani, care a participat la Campionatul European din Elveţia şi Austria.

Knezevic nu a evoluat în meciul din sferturile de finală cu Turcia, pierdut de Croaţia la penaltiuri, deoarece a suferit o accidentare la ligamentele unui genunchi.

Schweinsteiger: fight between Juve, Chelsea and Manchester

After Diego, Aquilani, Banega and Xabi Alonso, Juve’s scoop could be the flexable Bastian Schweinsteiger, one of the best players in the Bundesliga. His break clause is 20 million euros, the Bayern player is looking for a more substantial salary and he would not mind Juventus. The possibility of acquiring Schweinsteiger has also interested Chelsea. According to the Daily Star Sunday, the British club could invest 10 million pounds (12.6 million euros) on the German midfielder, but in the race there would also be Manchester United, if Cristiano Ronaldo will move to Real Madrid.

Disappointment Inter: Chelsea Lampard not for sale'

Frank Lampard, currently on holiday in Positano, is far away from rejoining his old coach Jose Mourinho. Chelsea have no intention to sell him. According to the Sunday Mirror, the blues are ready to keep the midfielder until his contract expires (2009), rather than transfer him immediately to another club. “There will be other meetings with Frank and his entourage and he will be offered a very rich agreement in the unlikely event that Lampard decides to reject our current offer, therefore we prefer to keep him for the last year of his contract without allowing him to move to another team”. The same club’s representative interviewed by the British paper, added: "We had no contact with the Italian club or with anyone else. Any interest in Frank is unnecessary and not welcome".
