Modric set to miss out for Spurs
Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric is extremely doubtful for the Champions League Group A opener at Bremen.
Croatia international Modric was forced from the field in Saturday's 1-1 Premier League draw at West Bromwich and, although an X-ray confirmed he escaped serious injury, he is unlikely to start at Weserstadion.
Striker Jermain Defoe and central defender Michael Dawson are both out for several weeks with damaged ligaments.
Captain Ledley King returns in Dawson’s place after being rested at the weekend, while Harry Redknapp’s comments about 4-4-2 leaving his side exposed in European away games hint that he will look to a lone striker.
Peter Crouch is expected to get the nod over Roman Pavlyuchenko in Defoe's absence.
Italian goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini will continue to deputise for Heurelho Gomes (groin).
Jamie O'Hara (back) and Jonathan Woodgate (groin) are long-term absentees.
Bremen are missing Germany defender Per Mertesacker, who fractured an eye socket during his country's 6-1 EURO 2012 qualifying win over Azerbaijan.
Regular defensive partner Naldo is also out, while striker Claudio Pizarro is a major doubt with a thigh injury.
As a result, Mark Arnautovic will lead the line with support from Marko Marin, while former Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre will partner Sebastian Proedl at the back.
Banega to miss United clash
Valencia midfielder Ever Banega is set to miss the Champions League clash with Manchester United after spraining his ankle.
The Argentina midfielder is set for a month on the sidelines after going over his left ankle during the 1-0 Primera Division win over Racing Santander.
Tests have shown ligament damage that could rule the 22-year-old former Boca Juniors and Atletico Madrid playmaker out of the first two Champions League group matches, against Bursaspor and United.

Chelsea miss Drogba
Chelsea face Olympique Marseille in their Champions League Group F match without suspended striker Didier Drogba and the injured trio Frank Lampard, Salomon Kalou and Yossi Benayoun.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that Drogba's enforced absence means that Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka would definitely start up front, with either Daniel Sturridge or Gael Kakuta also set to feature against the French champions.
Anelka will take on a French side for the first time since he was sent home from the World Cup following his criticisms of then-France coach Raymond Domenech in South Africa.
Marseille defender Leyti N'Diaye is back in the squad after recovering from a shoulder injury meaning manager Didier Deschamps has a fully fit group of players at his disposal.
Benzema to start against Auxerre
France striker Karim Benzema will start for Real Madrid in Tuesday's Champions League match against Auxerre after a recent improvement in his game, coach Jose Mourinho said on Monday.
"He has been playing the way I want him to play so he should play tomorrow", said Mourinho, who hit out at Benzema earlier this month for a lack of motivation.
Benzema, who joined last season from Olympique Lyon, has only started one out of 5 games since Mourinho took over during the close season.
Carrick set for United return
Michael Carrick could make his first-team return for Manchester United in their Champions League group stage clash with Valencia on Wednesday.
The midfielder has not started a game for United since the Community Shield and, although he did join up with the England squad for their opening EURO 2012 qualifiers, he was then sent for an injection to try to ease the discomfort from a niggling Achilles problem.
Sir Alex Ferguson reported on Friday that Carrick had returned to training and the former Tottenham star was on the flight to Spain that departed without the injured Wayne Rooney.
Carrick's presence was counter-balanced by the absences of Paul Scholes and Gary Neville.

Cardozo doubt for Lyon trip
Benfica striker Oscar Cardozo is a doubt for the UEFA Champions League match at Stade Gerland on 20 October after damaging ligaments in his left knee.
The Paraguayan international had to be replaced during the second half of the 2-0 Group B defeat at Schalke.
Cardozo is expected to be sidelined for at least 3 weeks.
Benfica are third in Group B with 3 points from 2 games.
Douglas in doubt for trip to London
Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Douglas Costa is an injury doubt for the Ukrainian club's UEFA Champions League tie against Arsenal.
The 20-year-old has been ruled out for at least 2 weeks after suffering a thigh strain during Shakhtar's 2-0 home victory over arch-rivals Dynamo Kiev on Sunday. The Premier Liga champions meet Arsenal in London on 19 October, both sides having won their first 2 Group H fixtures.
Another of Shakhtar's Brazilian midfielders, Fernandinho, has already been sidelined for the remainder of the season with a broken leg, though defender Dmytro Chygrynskiy is back in training following a hamstring injury.
Alex to miss Moscow trip
Defender Alex is expected to sit out Chelsea's UEFA Champions League Group F game at Luzhniki on 19 October because of a thigh muscle injury.
The 28-year-old centre-back sustained the injury in the closing stages of Sunday's 2-0 home victory against Arsenal after scoring Chelsea's second goal and has since withdrawn from the Brazil squad to face Ukraine on Monday.
"It is estimated he will be out for 3 weeks", a club statement read.
English titleholders Chelsea are level with Spartak at the top of Group F after winning their opening 2 matches, against MSK Zilina and Olympique Marseille.

Klose & Van Bommel miss visit of CFR
Bayern Munchen will take on CFR Cluj in the UEFA Champions League next Tuesday without injured duo Miroslav Klose and Mark van Bommel while Ivica Olic is a doubt.
Centre-forward Klose tore muscle fibres in his left thigh shortly after opening the scoring for Germany in the 3-0 EURO 2012 qualifying success in Kazakhstan and is expected to be sidelined for 10 days.
Van Bommel faces a similar lay-off due to ruptured tissue and bruising in his right knee. The midfielder sustained the injury during the Holland's win in Moldova on 8 October but still played 72 minutes of the Oranje's 4-1 victory over Sweden 4 days later.
Olic, meanwhile, has undergone surgery after fracturing his nose during Croatia's triumph in Israel on Saturday. Bayern are top of Group E with 6 points having defeated AS Roma and FC Basel.

Van der Vaart banned
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp will be without influential midfielder Rafael van der Vaart for his side's Champions League Group A clash at Milano on Wednesday.
Van der Vaart, who has made a superb start to his Spurs career, is suspended while defender Ledley King limped off with a groin injury in Saturday's 2-1 win at Craven Cottage in Premier League.
King's fellow centre-backs Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul have knocks, so William Gallas is set to partner Sebastien Bassong despite not being fully fit.
"He's got to play, there's no one else", Redknapp said of Gallas.
"Whether you can get 3 games in a week out of him, though, is going to be difficult. I'll probably have to take a chance on Wednesday."
Tottenham are looking forward to one of the biggest games in the club's history following their 4-1 thrashing of Twente Enschede in their last Champions League outing.
They are also without long-term absentee Jermain Defoe, but Aaron Lennon impressed on his return from injury against Fulham.
Injuries to Diego Milito and Goran Pandev mean Benitez has been forced to play youngsters Coutinho and Jonathan Biabiany out wide in his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation.
It worked in the 4-0 win over Werder Bremen in their last Champions League game, when Samuel Eto'o bagged a hat-trick, but less so in Sunday's 1-0 victory at Stadio Sant'Elia.
Former FC Barcelona man Eto'o is flourishing because treble hero Milito is out and he can play as the main striker. When the Argentine returns, Eto'o will probably be moved out wide again given Inter's lack of depth.
Ramires out
Chelsea midfielder Ramires has been ruled out of the Champions League Group F clash at Luzhniki Stadium on Tuesday.
The Brazilian suffered an ankle injury in the 0-0 Premier League draw at Villa Park on Saturday.
He joins Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and Alex on the sidelines, with the former still suspended.
Boss Carlo Ancelotti, meanwhile, insisted that the infamous plastic pitch - the scene of Chelsea's Champions League final defeat by Manchester United in 2008 - would not be used as an excuse by his team.
Spartak’s Brazil playmaker Alex will miss the clash with a thigh injury.
Alex was substituted at half-time in Friday's 3-0 league win over Alania Vladikavkaz shortly after scoring Spartak's second goal.
The Muscovites could also miss leading striker, Alex's compatriot Welliton, who is yet to recover from a pulled thigh muscle, and Ireland winger Aiden McGeady, who did not play against Alania because of a leg injury.
Stankovic expected to miss Tottenham trip
Midfielder Dejan Stankovic is expected to miss Internazionale Milano's UEFA Champions League matchday 4 game at White Hart Lane after sustaining a calf injury during the 4-3 victory over the London side at Meazza.
The Serbian international, 32-year-old, was taken off after 50 minutes on Wednesday, with scans showing he has strained his right calf.
Stankovic scored the third of Inter's 4 first-half goals against Spurs before the Nerazzurri were almost upstaged by Gareth Bale's hat-trick for the visitors. The European champions top Group A with 7 points from 3 outings, three more than second-ranked Tottenham.

UEFA suspend Pinto for whistling
UEFA have banned FC Barcelona's reserve goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto for the next 2 Champions League matches over "gross unsporting conduct" during the Spanish side's 2-0 defeat of FC Copenhagen.
The 34 year-old "whistled to stop a promising attack from striker Cesar Santin in the Champions League Group D match" on 20 October, the disciplinary committee of European football's governing body said on Friday.
Pinto was only fielded after first choice goalkeeper Victor Valdes was ruled out with fever.
Barca's next match is a trip to Copenhagen next Tuesday and then away at Panathinaikos on 24 November.
The club and player have 3 days to appeal.

Julio Cesar and Cambiasso set to miss Tottenham clash
Inter Milano goalkeeper Julio Cesar and midfielder Esteban Cambiasso are highly likely to miss Tuesday's Champions League Group A match at White Hart Lane after scans showed both had suffered thigh strains.
"Already tomorrow they will begin a course of physiotherapy", an Inter statement said on Saturday without saying when they might return.
The pair were substituted during Friday's Serie A win at Marassi and were replaced by former Sampdoria 'keeper Luca Castellazzi and goalscorer Sulley Muntari, who are both set to deputise again in England.
The European champions have a string of muscle injuries this term with pundits questioning whether Rafael Benitez's training regime is to blame after the squad had a relatively clean bill of health under ex-coach Jose Mourinho last season.
Strikers Diego Milito and Goran Pandev were only fit enough for the bench in Genova and are not certain to start at Tottenham while several other first teamers are carrying niggles.

AS Roma lose Pizarro for Basel trip
AS Roma midfielder David Pizarro has been ruled out of action for 3 weeks after picking up a thigh injury in training on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old underwent a scan today after suffering the setback and he will miss the UEFA Champions League game away to FC Basel next Wednesday as well as being doubtful for Bayern Munchen's visit to Rome on 23 November.
The Giallorossi, who also lost winger Rodrigo Taddei to a calf problem this week, already had a question mark against midfielder Daniele De Rossi's availability for the Basel trip as he recovers from a calf injury sustained on Italy duty earlier this month.
AS Roma lie bottom of Group E with 3 points from as many matches, but are level on points with FC Basel and CFR Cluj.
Lyon missing Cissokho at Benfica
Olympique Lyon left-back Aly Cissokho is set for a 3-week absence after sustaining a thigh injury.
The 23-year-old French international was forced off 56 minutes into Sunday's draw at Arles-Avignon and as a result Cissokho will miss the UEFA Champions League Group B leaders' trip to Estadio da Luz on Tuesday.
A point in Lisbon would take Lyon into the last 16. His place will be taken by either Timothee or Kim Kallstrom, who deputised in Wednesday's French Cup loss to Paris Saint-Germain.
