GTA4 Confirmed PS3 Exclusive?
More GTA4 NewsEarlier this week a few news articles were seen on numerous gaming websites about the next GTA for next-gen consoles being an 8 month exclusive for the PS3. Most of them being from fairly unknown websites, which already raised a few red flags. However as always a rumor like this should have a starting point and throughout the days I sniffed around the web to find it.
By the looks of it, it must have started between PS3 Updates and Gamer Andy. An editor called Clay was contacted by an unknown source about the next GTA for next-gen consoles (otherwise known as GTA4) being an 8 month exclusive for Sony's Playstation 3. He appeared to have said that both Sony and Take Two Interactive will announce this closely to Xbox 360's release.
That was October and two days ago he was contacted by one of the companies mentioned in the previous article (possibly Take 2) and they confirmed to him that it is in fact true. This comes as no surprise though as throughout the years Take Two and Sony had a good relationship when it came to Grand Theft Auto. GTA: San Andreas for instance was a 7 month exclusive for the Playstation 2.
So if you plan to buy yourself an Xbox 360 later this month, bear in mind that there is a big possibility you will have to wait a very long time after GTA's PS3 launch to play it on your 360. For now we'll just have to keep an eye on Take Two's press release page.
The American publication PSM was sent out recently to subscribers and it contained a nice article pertaining to the Playstation 3 and details on some of the games. There is a huge list of titles from current and new developers. Of course it had Rockstar with 2 titles. One is a Western-themed action game and the other is ...... GTA4.
According to PSM the PS3 should be available worldwide in 9 months or so. Interestingly they had some information on GTA4. We quote:
“…specifically, [Rockstar] are going to be using the high data transfer bandwidth of the Cell CPU, RSX GPU, and Blu-ray Disc to use several streams of game info simultaneously.”
Rockstar North is said to have had its dev kit since August this year and is currently working on a brand new game engine for their next-gen GTA titles. Rockstar is aiming to create a photo-realistic city for GTA 4, complete with seriously advanced AI for the game's NPCs.
The game's city is still unknown, but we do know that it will be broken down into smaller, more detailed areas at the engine level, into which the game designers are going to be able to pour more textures, more object variety, and tons of details such as discarded soda cans with their own physics.
Expect screenshots and more detailed info on this title early next year.

Fans of the series have long been wondering where GTA4 takes place, but it turns out they should have been wondering when. The game is set in the futuristic city of Maeba Prime, which one environment artist describes as "Blade Runner meets Star Wars meets Mrs. Doubtfire". Skyscrapers covered in neon lights and gigantic holographic billboards dominate the skyline, laser guns and light sabers (with the clever brand name "The Lucas") are common, and all wrist watches are digital.
What about the radio stations that gave previous GTA installments so much personality? Many of the popular voice actors - including Lazlow - are back, only this time around they will be playing their old characters' descendants who happen to have the exact same jobs, sound exactly the same, and hold the same opinions. And the music? Instead of coming up with hours of futuristic music to fill the airwaves, Rockstar decided to only include current music and label each radio station as "classic".
Vehicles
While the core gameplay mechanic still revolves around stealing modes of transportation as you explore a free roaming environment, there are no real streets as we know them in Maeba Prime so most of your travel will be done in the air or through the densely packed crowds of people on the walkways that span the gaps between buildings. Here's a quick rundown of the many ways you can get around Maeba Prime:
* Bicycles - With neon wheels
* Jetpacks - Only slightly harder to pilot than the helicopters in previous games
* Pedestrians - Approaching a pedestrian from behind and clicking the left analog stick will allow you to clamber up onto your target piggyback style and ride him or her around. Many hours can be wasted by having them run at top speed into traffic or toward the ledge of a building, then diving off of them at the last second.
* Flying cars
* Flying boats
* Hovering airplanes - Can't fly, but can hover a good foot and a half off the ground
Improved Controls
The gang at Rockstar have taken note of the tight controls in Saints Row which allow you to aim precisely in all directions both on foot and while driving. This interesting decision to put the player in total control of the action, they feel, is a gimmick.
GTA4 uses an advanced version of the lock-on system, where every single npc within drawing distance of your character is automatically targeted at all times. Pressing the attack button will use your current weapon on a randomly selected target (there are typically 80 or more on screen at the same time - impressive!). You can remove individual people from your lock-on list by simply clicking down on the right thumbstick while tapping the left thumbstick to the left or right to cycle through your targets, then pressing the left and right trigger buttons simultaneously to confirm your choice.
Instead of just having the option to shoot straight out of your window to the left or right while in a vehicle, you can now shoot directly forward into the dashboard or backward into your gas tank/fuel cell.
Compelling Storylines
The stylish cinematics and pulse-pounding missions we've come to expect have returned, but this time they're new! Here's a sneak peek at some of the actual dialogue for one of your mission providers, a teenage hacker/gang leader voiced by Kevin Spacey.
Chapter One - "Damned If You Do, Damned If You Dough"
Billingsley: So you're the new guy in town, just strolled in and already acting like you own the place. You gotta earn my trust, son. Our rival hacker gang, the Bitboys, are a bunch of straight up bitches. Go show them we mean business by having a bunch of weird ass pizzas they don't even want delivered to their hangout. You have thirty seconds to do this, and you can only use the payphone across the city.
Chapter Two - "Pain In The Glass"
Billingsley: Not bad, that pizza stunt should knock the Bitboys out of commission for good. By now you've probably heard that we're the biggest dealers of illegal stained glass in Maeba Prime, right? Well I need you to take this incredibly slow and dilapidated hovertruck full of very fragile stained glass in a clockwise lap around the entire city and then bring it back here. If there's a single scratch on that glass you will fail. Also, you will be escorting three robots who tend to run in separate directions from each other and knock into pretty anything they see, including your hovertruck full of fragile stained glass. If one of them wanders more than one block away from you, you will fail. If the cops see the large print on the side of the hovertruck that reads "ILLEGAL CARGO" and pull you over or touch your vehicle, you fail.
Chapter Three - "The Heat Is On"
Billingsley: Good work with the stained glass, dawg. The Bitboys are somehow back in action, and they're having an ice cream n' strippers party to celebrate. I want you to fly this remotely controlled nanite into their hideout and adjust the thermostat so that their ice cream melts, putting them out of commission for good. Your nanite will emit a wailing siren sound to alert the enemy of its presence, and it can not withstand an attack of any kind. Good luck.
Chapter Four - "Pane In The Ass"
Billingsley: Nice work with the ice cream, homey! I want you to take that hovertruck full of very fragile stained glass in a counterclockwise lap around the city, tailing one of those robots you escorted earlier. If you get close enough for him to see you, you fail. If you let him get out of your sight, you fail. If you can pull this off, we'll have full control of the city for reasons I can't explain.
Conclusion
These features alone would make for a fantastic game, but as you might expect there are tons of additional activities and surprises in GTA4. For example, the workout system in San Andreas has been greatly expanded. For every step you take your character loses one pound, and for every ten seconds you stand still or sit in a vehicle your character gains three pounds. The constant struggle to stay somewhere between morbid obesity and terminal emaciation adds a layer of strategy to an already compelling experience. And that's just one of many features that affect your appearance, I haven't even gotten into the frequent crippling seizures which afflict your character during missions and permanently goof up his facial muscles unless you rapidly press a sequence of buttons in the correct order.

...GTA IV might be scheduled to be released on the 360 and PS3 at the same time, but it seems that Microsoft has managed to secure some exclusive content that is to be released via Xbox Live!
In a recent X06 announcement today, the content will be available a short time after the game is initially released in two "chapters." Each chapter is said to contain approximately 10+ hours of gameplay with new and unique content not accessible through the standard version of the game.
The release date is set for North America on Oct. 16 and Europe on Oct. 19. As of this announcement there is no scheduled release date for the episodic content.
...Microsoft have published a press release about the X06 event currently taking place in Barcelona, Spain. In it they talked about episodic content available on Xbox Live for various games, including Grand Theft Auto IV. Interestingly, the GTA IV episodes seem to be Xbox 360 exclusive. Sony have not yet released any details as to whether we'll be able to download content via PlayStation 3's download service, but even if they do, it seems it won't be the same as what will be on offer at Xbox Live.
Rockstar and Take-Two will provide Xbox 360 gamers with exclusive access to two epic downloadable episodes of Grand Theft Auto IV via Xbox Live, each with hours of new gameplay content, and available only on Xbox 360 just months after the release of the title.

SA fiu sincer jocurile cu impuscaturi sunt grele pe x-box si PS2 pentru ca trebue sa intorci camera, si pana cand o intorci te fac aia praf

It would seem that with the Wii's strong sales performance, including outselling Sony, Nintendo is increasingly being pressured to talk about future plans. Reggie Fils-Aime, President of Nintendo America, has indicated that Nintendo is interested in a GTA4 port for the Wii. What he said goes along these lines:
"Nintendo has done all it can to persuade Take-Two Interactive Software to bring the Grand Theft Auto franchise to Nintendo consoles, and it is now up to the third party publisher to decide whether Rockstar Games' immensely popular series will appear on Wii."
December, 2006
The timing of this statement is interesting if you consider the new-found strength of Nintendo in the console wars. As recently as Summer 2004, however, David Gosen of Nintendo Europe had this to say about a collaboration between Nintendo and Take2 (a sample of our reporting from 2004):
"David Gosen, Managing Director at Nintendo of Europe has confirmed what many critics have been predicting - even with San Andreas creeping around the corner, Nintendo still do not want to introduce Grand Theft Auto to the GameCube. Gosen commented that GTA is a violent game and "a dead-end street"."
June, 2004
The fact is that Rockstar has already announced and signed deals with Sony and Microsoft for an October 2007 GTA4. Because Nintendo is at this point a strong competitior for Sony and Microsoft, and Nintendo seems to be playing catch-up at this point, it would be in the interests of neither Sony nor Microsoft to allow a slice of the GTA4 pie for Nintendo. However if the Wii is to have a strong shelf-life, Nintendo needs to seduce more game developers to chip in. How long will it be before gamers get tired of baseball and golf?
What is certain at this point is that GTA4 has been in development for years and is coming out for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in October. About a PC version; it is difficult to imagine Rockstar abandoning its PC fan-base. The Hot Coffee debacle probably struck a serious internal investigation at Rockstar into how such an easter egg made it into the final release, yet that was an oversight by the developers which was spotted by enthusiastic modders, and a setback which is well overcome by the millions that the GTA trilogy on PC has earned the developers. Therefore a PC release either in October or in 2008 is very probable.
In any case, Nintendo's attempts to attract GTA4 to the Wii seem to me late and very much a case of wishful thinking encouraged by the press. Although GTA4 is supposed to be the next revolutionary title, and Rockstar is quite the unpredictable and secretive developer, a GTA4 on the Wii in October is a very, very long shot. That's two 'very's.
Thompson Wasting No Time; Gunning Against GTA4
Jack Thompson, Florida lawyer and anti-violent games activist, is wasting no time in vocalising his opinions about the future GTA. While Thompson is trying to keep violent games out of the hands of children, his large-scale media approach to the cause is creating a lot of news, but also alienating a lot of people and setting him up in the crosshairs as one of the most vocal people against videogames.
A sample of the letter, addressed to Bill Gates, is reproduced for you below.
Re: October 2007 Release of Grand Theft Auto IV for XBox 360
Dear Mr. Gates:
Please be advised of my intent to undertake various means to prohibit and stop the sale of the above XBox/Take-Two/Rockstar game to minors.
A recent report, available at [the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility] makes it abundantly clear that unless such prohibitions are in place, then millions of units of the new Grand Theft Auto game will be sold directly to minors. I am quite intent upon making sure that that does not happen. I and others will endeavor to stop Microsoft from participating in any fashion, directly or indirectly, in such sales to minors.
Please have your lawyers contact me in order that such sales will be prevented.
PLEASE GOVERN YOURSELF ACCORDINGLY.
Regards for a Happy New Year, Jack Thompson
I surely hope Mr. Thompson isn't threatening anyone with capitalised letters and exquisite statements of intent.
