Ideea pentru asta mi-a venit intr-o seara cand veneam cu autobuzul acasa si ma pierdusem printre ganduri. E prima oara cand o pun pe ea ca personaj central. Nu cred ca o sa o mai fac prea curand.

Ray of Light

The sound of a bus’s engine echoed in the pouring rain and flashing lights sped by in a blur as the wind howled, blowing up against the speeding demons. There were no people on the streets, as no soul dared venture into the murderous storm. Up above, the Sun was nowhere to be seen, as it lay hidden behind the dark clouds.

There she was, standing at the bus stop, her tears pouring heavier than the rain around her. Her soul empty and weak, she felt more lost than she had ever felt in her entire life. All that remained of her hope had been lost long ago to life’s cruelty. Sophie was not your average teenager. Or maybe she was, but she was the bad kind of average, the kind you’re glad you’re not. The scary kind, the kind that looks in the mirror and wishes they’d die, crying themselves to sleep every night and feeling a stranger to everyone around them. She was alone in her hole, with no one to notice her grief and no one to hold her, understand her and tell her everything would be alright. She had gotten used to it by now, with all those years of darkness behind her. She just stood there, sobbing, curled up against a glass window, holding an empty medicine bottle in her hand. Pain relief is what Sophie sought. She threw the bottle in anger and lowered her head in her arms, weeping unlike how she had ever wept before. She had reached the bottom of the pit and there we no rope for her to grab on to.

‘Miss,’ a voice interrupted her and pulled her back to reality. She lifted her head and saw a someone reaching to her with a tissue in their hand. She watched bewildered as she was unable to figure out what was happening or what she was supposed to do. ‘It’s okay, take it, you look like you need it more than I do,’ said the man next to her. She hesitated a while but finally took the tissue from his hand and began to wipe her tears away. ‘It looks like it’s coming to an end,’ he said as he sat down next to her. Sophie stopped for a moment and dared to look at him, confused. He was no man. He was a young boy, perhaps of the same age as her. He was looking at the sky and smiling. ‘The rain, I mean,’ he said turning back to her. Sophie quickly looked away, as if she were afraid. ‘My name’s Raymond,’ he said, ‘but you can call me Ray. What’s your name?’ Sophie built up the courage to look at him again. ‘S… Sophie,’ she said barely moving her lips. ‘Sophie, what a wonderful name.’ There was something comforting about his smile, it captured her for a moment. She realized the rain had almost stopped and the clouds were beginning to fade away, making room for the Sun to shine, just like he said would happen.

Sophie could not understand who this boy was, what he was doing there or why he was talking to her and being nice to her, he didn’t even know her. ‘So tell me, what’s bothering you?’ Sophie was amazed by how easy he seemed to talk to her, as if they had known each other for a long time. ‘What? It’s… uh… nothing, you wouldn’t understand.’ Strangely, he seemed genuinely interested, so he insisted. ‘Try me, I might understand better than you think.’ Sophie was bewildered by his interest, but somehow felt uncomfortable. ‘I’d rather not,’ she said turning around. The boy smiled and gazed upon her with compassion. ‘It’s okay, I understand.’ He gently touched her shoulder in a comforting manner. It struck her like lightning, taking her by surprise, but somehow, it made her feel more secure. She allowed it. There was something about his touch, it felt right. She couldn’t explain it to herself, but she felt she wanted the strange boy to never take it off again. She looked at him again, trying to figure him out. He smiled and looked at the sky. ‘It seems it’s over. The Sun’s come out.’ Without taking her eyes off him, Sophie replied. ‘Yes… indeed it has.’ The two looked at each other for a while before Sophie put her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes. It was like she was in a trance. She felt safe and warm and although she could not understand it, she did not want to look further into it, as it was not something that happened very often. The boy was also surprised, but felt happy as he smiled and discreetly smelled her hair. ‘Sophie, you’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen,’ he thought to himself.

A bus stopped in front of them and the boy quickly stood up. ‘This is my bus, I have to go now. It was really nice meeting you. Before I go, will you do me a favor,’ he asked her. She watched confused and asked him what it was he wanted from her. ‘You’ve got an amazing smile, promise me you’ll use it more often,’ he told her in a friendly manner. That statement alone made her blush and she smiled out of nowhere, her own reaction taking her by surprise. ‘See, I knew you could do it.’ He gazed for a while, trapped by her beauty. ‘I love that smile,’ he thought to himself. ‘I have to go, see you,’ he said turning towards the bus. ‘Wait,’ Sophie said, jumping on her feet. ‘Will I ever see you again?’ He smiled and took her by the hand. He looked into her eyes for a moment and proceeded to kiss her cheek. ‘You will, Sophie, I promise.’

Even though she could not understand it, she believed him. At that moment, she could have believed anything he said. As he turned and left, she had already begun looking forward to seeing him again. Sophie stood there as the bus left and gently brushed her cheek. She smiled and looked up at the sky. It was a beautiful, sunny day.
