Blind announces international retirement

Former Manchester United and Bayern Munchen defender Daley Blind announced his retirement from international football on Wednesday after 108 caps for Holland, making way for a "talented new generation".

The 34-year-old was part of the Dutch squad that reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2014 and the quarter-finals in 2022, losing to Argentina both times.

Blind came through the Ajax youth system, eventually breaking through into the first team and won 4 straight Eredivisie titles with the Amsterdam-based giants.

In 2014, he transferred to Manchester United for £14 million during the reign of Louis van Gaal.

His stint at United brought success in the FA Cup and the Europa League but he went back to Ajax in 2018 for another spell that saw the club win 3 Eredivisie trophies.

In January 2023, he signed for Bundesliga giants Bayern Munchen, helping them to the German title, before moving to Girona. In 2019, Blind was diagnosed with an inflammation of the muscles around his heart after suffering dizziness during a Champions League match.

He had a heart defibrillator fitted, allowing him to continue his career.

Neuer announces international retirement

Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has announced his retirement from international football.

The 2014 World Cup winner was capped 124 times, with his final game for Germany coming last month in their EURO 2024 quarter-finals defeat by Spain.

The 38-year-old Bayern Munchen goalkeeper made his international debut in 2009 and featured in 8 major tournaments.

Neuer started Germany's World Cup Final victory over Argentina in Brazil and was named captain before the 2018 World Cup, a role he held until being replaced by Ilkay Gundogan earlier this year.
