Alonso reveals Gerrard admiration



Reds hero Gerrard marked his 600th game for the Merseyside club on Sunday, helping Brendan Rodgers' side to a 1-1 draw with Newcastle at Anfield.

Alonso, who played alongside the Huyton-born midfielder for a five-year period between 2004 and 2009, believes Gerrard could be a lynchpin for any team in the world.

"He could play in any national team in the world because he has so many great qualities," Alonso told Real Madrid TV.

"He is flexible. He can play at the English pace or he can associate with the ball very well. He is a very intelligent player, so he could play anywhere - not just any national team but any club in the world. But he has been a one-club man and that's something I really admire."

Real Madrid man Alonso also revealed how influential Gerrard has been on his own career, explaining that the way he conducted himself both on and off the pitch left a lasting impression.

"We are great friends and we still keep in touch. He was a great influence to me," Alonso continued.

"When I arrived at Liverpool I was 22 and he was the captain, he was the main man at the club.

"For me he was a reference, the way he behaved with his teammates and with the supporters as well. I learned a lot from him.

"As a captain he has embraced all the responsibilities of being a captain and he's the perfect captain for Liverpool, not just because he's a great player but because he represents the values of the club."

Mata & Ferguson scoop October awards

Juan Mata and Sir Alex Ferguson have been named the Premier League Player and Manager of the Month respectively for October.

Chelsea playmaker Mata collects the award having enjoyed an excellent month that saw him net twice in his side's 4-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

The 24-year-old also curled a sublime free-kick into goal during Manchester United's visit to Stamford Bridge.

Mata was quick to praise his team-mates upon receiving the award, most notably close-season signings Oscar and Eden Hazard, with whom the Spaniard has quickly formed an impressive understanding.

"I'm really enjoying playing alongside them", Mata told Sky Sports News.

"They're players who like to play with the ball, to assist and who have good movement - more or less like me."

Ferguson has steered his side to the top of the Premier League standings following 4 successive league wins.

A potent attack has been key to his side usurping Chelsea at the top of the table, Ferguson said.

"I'm pleased with our attacking play, that's been a feature of our game", the Scot said upon receiving the award for the 27th time of his career.

"We've had an issue about defending, but in Saturday's win against Arsenal we were back to what I expect of Manchester United defenders."

Vermaelen struggling with Arsenal captaincy



The form of Thomas Vermaelen seems to have been affected by inheriting the Arsenal captaincy.

Vermaelen was slammed for making a mistake which led to Robin van Persie’s opener at Manchester United.

Wenger admitted: “The error of Vermaelen was unwelcome. The big defenders don’t make those errors.”

Ironically, Vermaelen has taken over the Arsenal captaincy from Van Persie and Wenger believes the new role has been a factor in the player’s poor form.

The manager added: “You put more pressure on yourself when you are the captain.

“You want to be the best player in the team. But you cannot be a defender and not make a mistake.

“He is a guy who is completely involved in the game, he breathes his football from morning until night. He thinks about it and wants to do well.

“Physically he is outstanding. I think what has happened to him in recent weeks has affected his confidence. Overall, physically, he has no problem.”

Terry out for 3 weeks

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has confirmed John Terry will be sidelined for 3 weeks with a knee injury.

Initial fears were that the centre-back could have suffered a longer-term injury as his leg got trapped and twisted when he collided with Liverpool's Luis Suarez in their 1-1 draw on Sunday.

The England international looked in severe pain and was stretchered off the Stamford Bridge pitch, however MRI scans after the clash showed no significant damage to the cruciate ligaments.

The Chelsea manager has now revealed that the 31-year-old may only be missing for a few weeks, but he insisted that any length of time without their skipper is a big blow.

Rooney & Evans in doubt for United

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Wayne Rooney and Jonny Evans could miss Manchester United's trip to Norwich City on Saturday through injury.

The England forward is a doubt for the game at Carrow Road with an ankle injury picked up in United's last game, a 3-2 win at Aston Villa, which also forced him to miss England's 4-2 friendly defeat in Sweden.

Evans, meanwhile, was also forced out of international duty with a groin injury that saw him miss Northern Ireland's 1-1 draw with Azerbaijan and could join Rooney on the sidelines.

However, there was better news for the Red Devils with Robin van Persie expected to be fit after a thigh problem while Javier Hernandez is expected to start after his match-winning exploits against Aston Villa last time out.

Walcott out of Arsenal squad

Theo Walcott will miss Arsenal's Champions League Group B clash against Montpellier on Wednesday with a shoulder injury.

The winger fell awkwardly following a challenge from Michael Dawson during Arsenal's 5-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday but was able to complete the match after receiving treatment.

Arsene Wenger has confirmed the 23-year-old will be sidelined for the "short term" and will subsequently sit out Arsenal's tie against the French champions at Emirates, while Andre Santos will also miss out through injury.

Wenger also revealed Kieran Gibbs and Gervinho are fit enough to be included in Arsenal's squad after recovering from injury.

With 4 games played in Champions League, Arsenal sit second in Group B on 7 points and trail leaders Schalke by a single point.

Olympiacos are third having won 2 and lost 2 so far, while Montpellier are yet to register a victory but secured a draw against Schalke last month.

Meanwhile, Thierry Henry will train with Arsenal next month and could return for a third spell as a player at the club.

The club's all-time leading goalscorer has been told by the club he can keep in shape at their London Colney training base during the MLS off-season.

Wenger wants to strengthen his squad with a striker in January and has made Atletico Madrid's Adrian Lopez his top target.

However, if Arsenal cannot clinch a deal for the Spain international, they are considering turning once again to Henry, who has just completed his third season at New York Red Bulls.

The Londoners will lose Gervinho on African Cup of Nations duty in January for up to 6 weeks and doubt surrounds the future of Walcott, even though progress has been made in his contract negotiations with the club.

The Frenchman, who turned 35-year-old in August, had a fairytale 7-match return to Emirates at the start of the year, extending his Arsenal scoring record to 228 goals.

The striker returned to London last week after New York Red Bulls were beaten in the MLS play-offs to end their domestic campaign.

The Frenchman now plans to go on holiday before coming back to London in December.
