Ricardo Carvalho's return to action has been delayed after he twisted a ligament in his right knee, the Spanish league leaders said.
The Portuguese international has been recovering from a back problem and has not played for Real since late September when he featured in their 3-0 Champions League win over Ajax.
The club gave no indication of how long the 33-year-old former Chelsea defender would be out of action.
His Portuguese compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo missed his second training session of the week as he shakes off a sprained ankle picked up in the derby win over Atletico Madrid last weekend.

Malaga dealt Baptista blow
Malaga forward Julio Baptista is to have surgery on a fractured bone in his right foot and is expected to be out of action for up to 8 weeks, the Spanish club said on Monday.
The Brazil international has been sidelined since October with the problem and will have the operation on Wednesday.
Malaga lured Baptista from AS Roma in January as one of high-profile signings made by the south-coast club, who were bought by a member of the Qatar royal family last year.
A 3-2 defeat at Real Sociedad on Sunday left Malaga fifth in the league standings, 14 points behind leaders Real Madrid.

Atletico sack Manzano
Atletico Madrid finally put coach Gregorio Manzano out of his misery when the La Liga club's unpopular board sacked the 55-year-old following their midweek Copa del Rey elimination at the hands of third-tier Albacete.
Manzano's departure, after less than half a season in his second stint at the helm of Madrid's second club, was widely flagged in local media and former Atletico midfielder Diego Simeone has said he would be ready to take over after he quit as coach of Racing Club in his native Argentina on Tuesday.
A fan favourite as an Atletico player, the 42-year-old Simeone was quoted as saying in Spanish media on Wednesday that he had not signed any preliminary accord but the club had called him and he was hoping a deal could be agreed.
Manzano, who has coached La Liga clubs including Real Mallorca, FC Sevilla and Malaga, returned to Atletico in June, coinciding with the departure of prized forwards Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan and the arrival of striker Radamel Falcao and midfielders Diego Ribas and Arda Turan.
Known as "the professor", he has overseen an erratic campaign, including a 5-0 drubbing at Camp Nou.
The club, who would usually be challenging for a European qualification berth, are mired in 10th spot with only 19 points from 16 matches.
Villarreal part with coach Garrido
Villarreal have parted company with coach Juan Carlos Garrido after the La Liga club were eliminated from the Copa del Rey 3-1 on aggregate by third-tier side Mirandes.
Garrido, who replaced Manuel Pellegrini in 2009 when the Chilean left for a brief stint at Real Madrid, had to cope with a slew of injuries to key players this season and his side are hovering just above the relegation places in the league.

Joaquin set for month's lay-off
Malaga winger Joaquin Sanchez is set to be sidelined for around 4 weeks due to a torn right thigh muscle.
Joaquin complained of pain on Friday morning after playing in Thursday's Champions for Africa benefit match and, after undergoing tests, it was confirmed the former Spain international would be absent for at least the next month.
The 30-year-old, who joined big spending Malaga from Valencia in the summer, is now set to miss the 2 Copa del Rey last 16 matches against Real Madrid, as well as the league games against Atletico Madrid, Sporting Gijon, FC Barcelona and FC Sevilla.
Aguirre sacked by Real Zaragoza
Javier Aguirre had his contract as first team coach of Real Zaragoza terminated, the Primera Division club confirmed on Friday morning.
The Mexican, who led his country at the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa, had been in charge of the Aragon club since November of the same year.
Zaragoza are bottom of La Liga, having lost 8 of their last 9 league games.
A statement on the club's official website realzaragoza.com read: "Late last night on Thursday, 29 December, Real Zaragoza reached an agreement with Javier Aguirre for the termination of his contract as first team coach".

Jimenez takes Zaragoza reins
Real Zaragoza have appointed Manolo Jimenez as their new coach until the end of the season following the dismissal of Javier Aguirre.
Jimenez replaces Aguirre, who was dismissed earlier this week with Zaragoza rooted to the foot of the Primera Division standings having lost 8 of their last 9 league games.
The 47-year-old Jimenez, who will be presented on Sunday evening, has spent most of his career at FC Sevilla, representing the Andalusian club as a player from 1983 until 1997, then becoming reserve team coach for 7 years until 2007, when he took over as first team coach for 3 years.
After being sacked by FC Sevilla in March 2010, the former Spain international then took charge at AEK Athens who last season he helped win the Greek Cup.
Zaragoza, who were also knocked out of the Copa del Rey by second division Alcorcon just before Christmas, are next in action against Racing Santander next weekend when the Spanish season resumes after its winter break.

Banega pens new deal
Valencia midfielder Ever Banega has signed a contract extension which commits him to the La Liga club until 2015.
The Argentine signed a deal on Wednesday morning and immediately expressed his "delight" at prolonging his agreement with Unai Emery's side.
"I'm really happy to be able to extend my contract with Valencia. I want to continue adding what I can to this team and keep on improving", Banega said.
Banega joined Valencia from Boca Juniors in his native Argentina in January 2008 and spent the 2008/2009 season on loan at Atletico Madrid. He has featured prominently for Valencia over the past 2-and-a-half seasons, helping them to their current position of third in the Spanish league.

Casillas nears 600-game milestone
Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas will enter his name on an exclusive club list, should he take the field against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.
Casillas will make his 600th official appearance for Real Madrid if he features in the La Liga clash, putting him in select company at Bernabeu.
Only Raul (741 games), Manuel Sanchis (709), Santillana (645), Francisco Gento (602) and Fernando Hierro (601) have played more official games for Los Blancos.
Casillas, however, will become the first shot-stopper to reach 6 centuries of games for the Primera Division table-toppers.
The goalkeeper made his official debut against Athletic at San Mames in September 1999 and has since appeared in 438 league games, 118 Champions League matches, 27 Copa del Rey encounters, 5 Intercontinental cup games, 9 Spanish SuperCopa encounters and 2 European SuperCup matches.

Gijon sack Preciado
Sporting Gijon have sacked manager Manuel Preciado in the wake of Sunday's 5-1 thrashing at Real Sociedad in La Liga.
With the club languishing in 19th place and without a win in 7 games, an emotional club president Manuel Vega-Arango announced Preciado's dismissal on Tuesday.
Preciado, 54-year-old, was one of La Liga's most charismatic figures and was revered at Gijon, having guided the club back to the top flight at the end of the 2007-2008 campaign for the first time since 1998.
He had been at the helm since 2006, making him the longest serving coach in La Liga, but with only 18 points in 20 matches this season, the board decided change was needed.
Preciado's assistant Inaki Tejada is expected to take charge for Sunday's game against Osasuna.
It has been reported former Getafe coach Michel, who is currently out of work, is in line to fill the post permanently.
Marcelo may miss Getafe trip
Marcelo is in doubt for Real Madrid's La Liga match away to Getafe on Saturday due to an injury sustained against Real Zaragoza.
Marcelo picked up a leg problem in last weekend's 3-1 win at home to Zaragoza, but stayed on the pitch until the final whistle as Real had already used all 3 substitutions.
The left-back underwent an examination on Monday to clarify the extent of the knock and Real believe the defender could miss the match against Getafe based on the results of an MRI scan.
Marcelo's absence would likely see Portugal international Fabio Coentrao, who has been used as a midfielder at times this season, drop into the defence.
Coutinho leaves Inter for Espanyol
Philippe Coutinho has joined Espanyol on loan until the end of the season.
The Brazilian playmaker finalised the deal on Monday afternoon with the details ironed out on transfer deadline day.
Coutinho, 19-year-old, has only started 4 games for Inter this season and will use the loan move as an opportunity to gain more first team experience.
He featured more regularly during the first half of the 2010/2011 season but the departure of manager Rafa Benitez saw his appearances become more sporadic.
Coutinho, who joined Inter from Vasco de Gama in 2008, had also been linked with Malaga and Chievo.

FC Sevilla sack coach
FC Sevilla have sacked coach Marcelino, following the team's poor 2011/2012 campaign.
The decision, announced on the club's website, will come as a surprise to Marcelino, who only said he was not going anywhere on Sunday.
The Andalusian outfit have collected only 2 points from their last 7 Primera Division encounters, dropping to 11th spot in the table with 26 points from 21 matches.
Marcelino's future came to a head after Sunday's 2-1 home defeat to Villarreal.
The 46-year-old former Racing Santander coach, who took over from Gregorio Manzano in the close-season, made a promising start to his career at FC Sevilla as they went unbeaten in their opening 9 La Liga games.

Casillas nears Real games record
Iker Casillas is set to equal club legend Manuel Sanchis for most complete La Liga appearances for the Spanish giants.
Sanchis featured in 437 league matches for the full 90 minutes during his spell at the club from 1983 until 2001.
Casillas has up to date taken part in 441 La Liga matches for Real Madrid, but the 30-year-old came off the bench once, while he did not stay on the pitch until the final whistle on 4 occasions as he was dismissed twice and was replaced due to injury in the other 2 appearances.
The Spain international will equal Sanchis' record if he features for the full 90 minutes in Sunday's home game against Levante and could become the sole record holder against Racing Santander the following week.
Casillas, who has a contract with Los Blancos until the summer of 2017, has so far made 603 official appearances for Real in all competitions.

Altintop suffers calf injury
Hamit Altintop is facing a spell on the sidelines after suffering a calf injury.
The Primera Division leaders did not put a timescale on a return for the 29-year-old Turkey international, who moved to the Spanish capital from Bayern Munchen last summer.
A statement on Real's website read: "After physical examination and tests at Hospital Sanitas La Moraleja, Hamit Altintop has been diagnosed with a calf injury in the medial gastrocnemius of the left leg".
Spanish giants top Money League
Manchester United are falling behind FC Barcelona and Real Madrid in the Money League of the world's richest clubs, according to a new report.
The report by analysts Deloitte says although United's revenues continue to grow they have not kept pace with the Spanish giants, who have the advantage of being able to negotiate their individual TV rights deals.
United's failure to qualify from the group stages of the Champions League this season will see the gap widen further next year, say Deloitte.
Real Madrid remain top of the money league with revenues in 2010/2011 of €479 million with FC Barcelona second on €451 million and Manchester United third on €367 million.
Chelsea remain 6th in the Money League, but Liverpool have fallen a place to ninth behind Inter Milano and the report states the Reds' lack of European football could see them drop out of the top 10 unless they at least qualify for Europa League.
Tottenham Hotspur are 11th in the Money League, just in front of Manchester City thanks to last season's Champions League income, but the value of the huge Etihad sponsorship deal, which could total £400 million, should see City break into the top 10 next year.

Albelda close to Valencia record
Veteran midfielder David Albelda is on the brink of a club record after signing a new one-year contract extension at Mestalla.
The 34-year-old will remain at Los Che until the summer of 2013 in a deal that will leave him just one season short of Ricardo Arias' record 16-year stay at Mestalla.
Albelda, who was capped 51 times by Spain, made his Valencia debut in 1997-1998 and has since won 2 Primera Division titles and a UEFA Cup as well as reaching 2 Champions League Finals.
"Valencia and David Albelda have reached an agreement for an extension to the player's contract, running through June 2013", a club statement read.
"It will be Albelda's 15th season with the first team since his debut back in 1997-1998 and he has become one of the most celebrated players in VCF history."

Vicente Calderon to host Copa del Rey Final
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has decided the 2012 Copa del Rey Final will be held at Vicente Calderon.
The match between FC Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao was initially scheduled to take place at Santiago Bernabeu, but was moved to another venue as Real Madrid's stadium was unavailable due to planned maintenance.
Barca and Bilbao failed to reach an agreement on where the Final should be held, but RFEF has now ended all uncertainty by naming Atletico Madrid's ground as the location for the encounter on 25 May.
Vicente Calderon received 22 out of the 40 votes, while Estadio de La Cartuja (Sevilla) got 14 votes.
The Copa del Rey Final last took place at Vicente Calderon in 2008, when Valencia beat Getafe 3-1.

Mourinho to stay with Real
Jose Mourinho has stated his intention to sign a new contract with the club, effectively ruling him out of several top jobs.
The Portuguese coach had recently been linked with a return to Premier League with the vacant Chelsea post touted, along with the England managerial role.
But the 49-year-old, a fan favourite at Chelsea, dispelled reports he was set to link up with owner Roman Abramovich once more as he committed his future to Real Madrid ahead of Saturday's La Liga clash with Real Betis.
"I am going to sign a new contract with Real Madrid. I would like to have a place in the club's history", Mourinho told Daily Mail.
"Real Madrid and I share a project and we are going to carry on with it. Being part of this team is a fantastic and unforgettable experience for a manager like me."
"Real is one of the biggest clubs in the world and I feel happy here. I feel they trust me here and I feel I have the complete support of the directors and all the fans."

Llorente doubtful for Athletic
Fernando Llorente is a major injury doubt for Athletic Bilbao's crucial La Liga showdown with Valencia at San Mames on Sunday.
Llorente scored a stunning opener as Athletic rounded off an impressive Europa League win over Manchester United but was then forced to limp off with 40 minutes gone.
Afterwards Llorente admitted his problem was related to an injury he suffered in Athletic's La Liga defeat to Osasuna in Pamplona last Sunday, when he came on as a second half substitute.
Llorente told Marca: "I got hurt in Pamplona on Sunday. I tried to recover but I didn't have enough time. I played for as long as I could. Now we must recover because it is a tough game and we must continue playing well".
The points are vital to Athletic's chances of confirming their place back in Europa League next year. Marcelo Bielsa's men currently sit in eighth place, one point behind Osasuna in the last qualifying place.

Real Madrid's goal spree finally ends
In what looks set to be a record-breaking season for Real Madrid in terms of goal-scoring, a goalless draw with Valencia saw the brakes slam on.
The 0-0 draw with Valencia was their first stalemate in the league at Santiago Bernabeu for 99 games - a result the home crowd had not witnessed since the 2006/2007 campaign.
Indeed, the last time Real did not score in a La Liga clash at home was over a year ago, when they were defeated 1-0 by Sporting Gijon on 2 April 2011.
And what made this result more remarkable was that it came after a run of breathtaking goalscoring.
In their previous 17 games, Real scored 52 goals and conceded 16 in what was an astonishing run for Jose Mourinho's side.
In La Liga, 100 goals in 30 games prior to the stalemate at Bernabeu has been an unprecedented feat for the men in white.
Much of that success is owed to the staggeringly-prolific Cristiano Ronaldo, who has plundered 135 goals in 134 appearances for the club prior to the match.
Real are honing in on the club record for goals scored in a season: the current record of 107 was set during the 1989/1990 campaign.
