Ranieri in frame for Roma job



Claudio Ranieri could be set for a shock comeback as reports link him with the top job at Roma.

Roma fans are becoming increasingly discontented with current coach Luciano Spalletti following a dismal start to their Serie A campaign.

Losses to both Genoa and Juventus see the capital club languishing at the bottom of the league table and have increased the pressure on boss Spalletti.

Consequently, rumours have emerged suggesting that Spalletti could be out of the job in the coming days, with some potential replacements already being lined up.

According to Sky Sports, one of those is Claudio Ranieri, the former boss of Juventus, and a man that has plenty of experience in the Italian topflight.

The reports go on to suggest that the Giallorossi will meet with their current coach tomorrow to discuss his position, however it is expected that he will be shown the door, which may allow Ranieri to step in.

Ranieri was sacked by Juventus in May 2009 following a disastrous run of results. Prior to that he had successful managerial spells at Fiorentina, Valencia and Chelsea.

Spalletti exit shocks Lippi



Luciano Spalletti's sudden resignation as coach of Roma has taken Italy boss Marcello Lippi by surprise.

Spalletti ended his four-year stint at the Giallorossi helm this morning following his team's poor start to the Serie A campaign.

Roma lost 3-1 against Juventus on Sunday, having gone down 3-2 at Genoa a week earlier.

"I didn't think it would happen," said Lippi.

"I saw Spalletti before Roma's game against Kosice (last Thursday) and there was no indication that things would end up like they have."

Under Spalletti, Roma won two Coppa Italia titles (2007, 2008) and an Italian Supercup (2008) as well as three times finishing runners-up to champions Inter Milan in Serie A.

"In these five years at Roma he has done fantastic things," said Lippi.

"Roma have always been competing for titles until the end.

"I'm surprised because I was convinced that Roma and Spalletti had a very strong bond."

Roma are in talks to appoint former Juventus tactician Claudio Ranieri as Spalletti's successor.

The Rome-born Ranieri was sacked by Juve in May.

"Ranieri is a serious professional," said Lippi. "He has plenty of experience and, if appointed, I wish him the best of luck."

Juventus are looking like a serious team

Inter president Massimo Moratti is wary of the threat from Juventus as he heaps praise on the Old Lady, claiming they are the only side that can challenge his own.

Moratti is walking with a spring in his step following Saturday night's 4-0 thrashing of AC Milan in the derby. The coach feels the Scudetto race will be a 2-way fight between his side and the Bianconeri.

"I think Juventus are becoming a serious team that are capable of fighting in Serie A and in the Champions League", Moratti told reporters.

"I think it's nice to see another team who are strong enough to challenge and make the league more interesting, but I hope Inter can keep the same equilibrium as in past seasons."

"It seems as if it will be a duel between Inter and Juventus this year, but we have to wait and see."

The chief believes the win against AC Milan has paved the way forward following a shaky start against Bari in week one.

"We did well and the win have boosted our morale. It has also served as an example that we are a team that can win in the league and acheive important results", concluded Moratti.

Lazio wantaways left out

Goran Pandev and Cristian Ledesma have been left out of Lazio's Europa League squad after demanding but failing to gain moves in the transfer window.

Macedonia striker Pandev has threatened to take legal action after being frozen out by coach Davide Ballardini and president Claudio Lotito.

Argentine midfielder Cristian Ledesma has also been omitted despite reports saying he was close to agreeing a new contract.

Defender Lorenzo De Silvestri, who also asked to leave, was allowed to join Fiorentina last week.

Trezeguet will leave Juventus in 2010

David Trezeguet's 10th season with Juventus will also be his last. Next year the striker will turn his back on the Old Lady.

Despite his contract with the Bianconeri, that runs till 2012, the 31-year-old is certain about his plans.

His announcement came unexpectedly, at the launch of Juve's new suit range. "I will leave Juventus at the end of the season", Trezeguet told the press.

"There will be no problems with my contract. I have informed the club."

"I have made a decision with my family and I will leave after 10 years of living in Turin. I want to go back home. I don't know whether it will be France or Argentina", Trezegol declared.

Trezeguet is the greatest foreign striker in Juve's history. He is the fifth all-time scorer with 161 goals to his name.

Chivu: Inter are hungry for more

Cristian Chivu insists that the 4-0 win over AC Milan will be the catalyst for Inter Milan to retain their Serie A title.

Chivu even stated that Inter's resounding win over Milan can propel the club to glory in the Champions League this season.

"The win against Milan gives us great conviction in our own qualities," explained the former Roma player to TV Romania. "The squad is stronger and the new players will improve the more games we play."

"We cannot hide, we have great hunger for more victories. With Lucio in defence we have acquired more experience and personality, but the entire squad is strong, and we can also arrive to the finals of the Champions League."

Santon reveals he is considering Cannavaro's advice

An ongoing debate between Fabio Cannavaro, Jose Mourinho and Davide Santon is nearing its end, with the latter of the trio having the final say on the issue.

"I obviously do want to play at the world cup for Italy", Santon declared to Sky Sport 24.

This comment has come in direct response to those made by his national team captain in Cannavaro, who suggested that the starlet should consider his options, as his playing time may be restricted with Inter this season.

He continued: "I haven't spoken to Mourinho about this yet, but again, I really would like to make Italy's world cup squad."

"The advice of Cannavaro? In January, I will consider an experience elsewhere, if it means that I will secure my place at the World Cup."

After immediately responding to Cannavaro's comments earlier in the week, Mourinho is certain to provide a prompt response to his young defender's recent claims.

Sneijder attacks Real Madrid

Internazionale Milano midfielder Wesley Sneijder has blasted former club Real Madrid, saying he was treated "like a kid" and that Primera giants do not have a team ethic.

The Holland international left Santiago Bernabeu for just over half the €27 million Real paid Ajax for him 2 years ago.

The arrivals of Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo limited first-team opportunities for the Dutchman, but he said Real's attitude forced him out.

"Real Madrid is a world apart from Inter", he told Gazzetta dello Sport in Italy. "For them, money means nothing and they treat people with little respect."

Adrian Mutu To Reach Compensation Compromise With Chelsea



The latest news from Italy suggests a stellar football tournament will be played and the funds raised will go to Chelsea as Mutu's compensation...

Adrian Mutu is ready to reconcile his relationship with Chelsea and propose an idea that will help him pay the club the €17million compensation he was ordered to.

According to Il Corriere Dello Sport, the Romanian is trying to find a solution to the problem that relates to his substance abuse and subsequest exit from the Blues in 2004.

Following several legal battles, the hitman was ordered to pay the English side the mega sum as compensation after it was ruled by the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) that he was in breach of contract.

On Monday, Mutu claimed he didn't have the money to pay back Chelsea, but the latest reports claim a compromise could be reached. It is said an idea has been drawn up in Florence to hold a stellar football tournament that would involve Fiorentina, Chelsea, Juventus and Steaua Bucarest. All proceeds from that match including television rights would go to the Blues as payment for the compensation.

Mutu was quoted by Romanian television Antenna 1 as saying he wanted to make Chelsea a proposal. "I want to make a proposition to [Roman] Abramovich, even though I know it will be difficult." said the player.

Meanwhile, the Viola man has left agent Alessandro Moggi, and returned to his previous representative Victor Becali.

"I met with Mutu and spoke to him and we agreed we would work together again," Becali told Prosport.ro

Ferrara: Trez will not betray Juve

David Trezeguet's impending departure from Juventus has concerned his coach of his commitment.

The Juve hitman had previously announced that the 2009/10 campaign would be his last season with ‘The Old Lady', but will not leave till season-end.

Juve boss Ciro Ferrara has confidence that the 31-year-old will keep to his word, but with next June's summer transfer window around the corner, Ferrara still needs reassurance.

Speaking to Sport.it, Ferrara said: "Trezegeut will not betray us.

"Again, I will definitely discuss things with him soon, but he will remain with us until the end of the season."

Trezeguet has been mainly linked to his former side Monaco.

George Weah has claimed that Samuel Eto’o has all the attributes to establish himself as the ‘Weah of Inter’.

Weah was at the San Siro to play in a tribute match for Stefano Borgonovo between the legends of AC Milan and Real Madrid.

"To repeat himself in Italy, he will need to work hard," Weah said to Repubblica.it

"The Serie A is a difficult league. At Barcelona, he did some stupendous things."

Inter Milano defender Javier Zanetti has said that the Meazza based club president Massimo Moratti is desperate to land Argentine star forward Lionel Messi.

The 36-year-old, who is the most capped player in Argentina history, has heaped praise on his countryman but the Nerazzurri player has also said that the 22-year-old is settled at FC Barcelona.

Inter president Moratti, though, is reportedly desperate to sign the young superstar and will do anything to persuade him to move to the Nerazzurri.

"Moratti is crazy for Messi", Zanetti told El Mundo Deportivo.

"He wanted to have him in the team but for the moment it's impossible. With Messi in the team Inter would be extraordinary."

"Juve will not be pulled in"



Juventus sporting director has reassured the club's fans that the side will not be embroiled in the Mutu affair.

Speaking to Il Giornale della Toscana, Alessio Secco said: "So far, we have not received any type of announcement but in the meantime, we have already alerted our lawyers, who are monitoring the situation.

"In the moment that we are asked about an official involvement by Juventus in this issue, we would know how to reply."

The prudent practice by the Juve sporting director comes in response to the Italian Players' Association (AIC) vice-president, Leonardo Gorsso stating that Juventus could get embroiled in the matter.

Speaking to the La Gazzetta dello Sport, Grosso said: "We are perplexed that Juve were not involved: an article of the FIFA rules contemplates joint and several liability, that is the liability of the club for which the player was registered after Chelsea."

Alessio Secco, however, believes otherwise.

"I remain of the idea that this story is only about a player, and not our club," Secco said.
